My first naval subject, a new challenge

Looking good - anything special planned?

Zach Wilson
Nope. Aftermarket PE and a nice base, but a straightforward build. Trying to get an understanding of this scale.

Thta is going to be a big boat even for 1/700th scale 👍 Looking forward to see the flight deck being populated with aircraft! And I am curious to see your approach to making a base

She's a big lady. There's a lot of little planes and they are in clear plastic for some reason.

You could really getting carried away when you start detailling things like the aircraft or add crew-figures. I did that once.... was a lot of fun, but also my longest modelling project ever so far.

Most of the construction is done

Are you sure that these "antenna-thingies" should be erected? I´d think they would endanger flight operations...

Zach Wilson
I have no idea lol, you might be right

Reference shows at least one starboard antenna constantly upright. On this side, it does not impact the incoming aircraft. On the port side however, photos often show these antenna-devices angled outwards 90°. It would however make sense for those devices to be folded down when aircraft are to be employed by the carrier. That does at least make sense to my not really carrier-educated mind 🙂

Ah, I guess Kitty Hawk preceded the Nimitz class maybe?

I wonder what kit is best, the Nimitz kits in 1:700, or the presumalby newer Kitty Hawk kits in 1:700.

I think I have learned that new/newer kits doesn't mean more accurate, but might very well be more crisp and more detailed.

It certainly is well detailed. The instructions are a little weird, like the way they indicate what goes where can be confusing. I feel like the aftermarker PE helps add a lot of detail. I have a bunch of PE figures and I'm trying to decide whether or not to add them.

awesome! how long ist that carrier? I'm impressed
16 December 2021, 17:42
Zach Wilson
it's about 18 inches

I can only recommend to add the figures, since they actually put a lot of "life" on the flightdeck.

One recommentation I have when using them: As PE-parts, they are pretty much "2D". But if you put a drop of white glue on each side of them, they become more "3D" - the glue will dry transparent, and give them a nice shape. It may be necessary to give them a final coat of matt clear, since white glue usually is glossy after drying.

Seems to become a busy deck.
Looks great, Greg! 👍

I just noticed the two erected deflection shields that don't have an aircraft in front of them - do you keep them "up"?
17 December 2021, 13:45
Zach Wilson
I thought about that as well, they didn't really lie flush when I had them down so I wasn't sure what the best looking version would be. Thanks for the tip on the figures!

I fixed the antennas, assembled the planes then realized they look ridiculous on the deck with the wings down, so I cut up the models and glued them into their folded positions, then primed it and started getting color on it. Now to fix overspray and continue blocking in the color.

This is fantastic work on your carrier - especially considering the tiny scale. Top job!

Finally complete. This was way way way more work than I thought it was going to be and I probably could have put another month into it. Satisfying to have it done.

superb work and well presented!

Thanks all. Richard - I don't know where I am going to display it, I have two very curious cats that would love to eat those tiny planes.

😂🤣😂, that's always the issue, isn't it Zach? It's why my 1/32 planes will be last onto the workbench - after I've negotiated with my wife for an area and suitable cabinet to display them (like, maybe never!) 🤔

I bought a 60x30x30cm fishbowl (?) that fitted perfect. It´s relatively cheap and now shields my carrier against dust and curious fingers.

For the water, I sculpted it using a blowtorch on pink foam, then covered it with apoxie sculpt to get the basic form. On top of that I covered it with aluminum foil to get the high frequency detail. It was painted blue, then I airbrushed in some white highlights where the churn is. on top of that I glazed it with some tamiya clear. Then I painted in some detail with a thinned white, and once that was all done I added several layers of gloss varnish. After that was dry I used woodland scenics snow combined with gloss varnish to make the waves and the spray. Then more gloss varnish and that's it.

You achieved a good result with your first naval subject. I particularly like the weathering of the flight deck and commando tower. You water represention is close to the technique I sorted out for my build. Looking good. That strenghens my resolve to try it this way.
