Sorry Bob I had a look at the Baldwin camaro kit
Just looked at a few reviews
I was thinking if thay made a kit pree chist thay probably wouldn't change much
In the next few thousand of years
The early kits were about 2000
The kit does have rockers showing in the heads
And yes you can see what resembles pistons
But all at the same level of the bore
And the 2 pistons on each end of the block on both sides
Have lining up blocks across them
The latest kit in that family still has those details
In the case of the block D Hadley is uesing
The pistons are at different levels and there is nothing over the pistons
Further more the pistons are machined for the valve clearance

It is hard to tell, why the surface looks like it looks. My guess is, that it was a little to much color for one pass or it was to thick (maybe caused of a colder surrounding?). I think with 2-3 layers of clear coat and at least wet sanding between #2 and #3 it could smooth the surface. But it depends on the clear coat what you use. I made the experience, that you need more layers out of a rattle can instead of using 2K (mixed clear coat and harderner). 2K is harder and takes more punishment while wetsanding. With normal clear varnish from a rattle can, the risk of sanding through the clear varnish is higher. That's why I work with several layers.

It would be very interessting to see, how you could build this kit today. I used to do that - rebuild my childhood mistakes 😉 Today I know, that there were a lot of kits which I've built in my childhood, where I see now, that I was to young to handle the issues. This C4 by MPC/AMT/ERTL is one candidate. The hood and wheels I'm still struggling with. They need some more attention.

Agreed! I never did get the hood to settle down right. I believe I have one of the same generation in my stash that I will get to have a second go at it.

I've build a hand full of the C4. It is always a struggle to get it fit properly at the front end. On one I cut off the pins for the hood hinge. The hood doesn't operate anymore but it closes well and the hight of the front end is deep enough. On the ZR1 I sanded a lot off away ot the air cleaner box. On one kit, I thinned out the inner hood around the area of some engine parts. I tried a lot and every kit was another solution. Mostly the problem is around the hood hinge. And then there is the problem: if you want to lower the chassis (practically the body gets lowered over the chassis), the hood gets hight at the hinge. If you fix the hood, then the distance of the wheel to the wheelhouse is to much.

And it still exists! My first modelkit car is the 1982 Camaro by Revell. It also sits in my shelf. So cool to be reminded to the roots of this hobby.

Thanks! I think its important to remember how far we've come. Its all too easy to get down on ourselves for imperfections.

It's so cool to see your "blast of the past". A lot of us didn't keep them I think.

Scissors, glue and decals. That's it - in the childhood. Do you think about to restorate some of your old kits?

I did restore one once several years ago. I liked what I did to it, but after I was finished, I felt a little sad that I had erased the efforts of my younger self. I vowed never to do that again. It turns out that I enjoy seeing my progress. I would sooner get another kit and build it again than erase my history.
