The next aircraft due to go on the work bench will be Airfix's Defiant. I'll be building the day fighter version OOB. 🙂

Olivier
I shall keep watching over your shoulder...

Guy Rump
Welcome Olivier. 🙂

I have finally made a start on the Defiant. BS Interior Grey Green (Vallejo Model Air) added to various parts. I also added some Aluminium to one of the parts and over sprayed the interior green . I'll have to touch up later on. 🙂 .

Watching. They released it exactly while I was finishing the MPM one and wondering how good this one is.

Charlie Spitfire
i have built this kit but the turret only has three guns as my little who is turning 3 tommoro found it and " played'' with it
28 January 2022, 09:55
Guy Rump
@charlie, yes I've used an airbrush for the above parts, hence my overspray of the Aluminium. 🙂
@Lukasz, the moulding is good (although the plastic is quite soft), obviously we'll see if I can do it justice!!
Welcome to you both. 🙂

The internal parts have now been painted and fixed into the fuselage. The control stick is scratch built as when taking the other one off the sprue it was lost into the jaws of the carpet monster.
Fuselage is now joined together. 🙂

Guy Rump
Wings have now been joined to fuselage. Wheel wells have been painted Vallejo Model Air interior green with a little detailing in aluminium and black.

The third photo in this series is:
Pilot Officer Eric Barwell in his Boulton Paul Defiant Mk.I 'PS-R' (N1536) of No. 264 Squadron RAF lined up at Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincolnshire, in late July 1940. 🙂

31 January 2022, 00:17
Charlie Spitfire
what schem are you doing
31 January 2022, 00:17
Guy Rump
@Guillaume, the kit is going together pretty well. I do like the detail and the way the tail plane joints go together. All in all, pretty good. 👍

@Charlie, I'll be doing the day fighter colour scheme. 👍
Welcome both 🙂

Vallejo Primer now on and panels have been shaded (with signal blue rather than black as I mistakenly put signal blue into the airbrush....) 🙂
3 February 2022, 18:00
Charlie Spitfire
looks good can you help me like you do you to spray panel lines
i think my blenheim is too far finished for me to try it maybe on my next model
3 February 2022, 18:05
Guy Rump
I agree Charlie, your Blenheim is almost complete so it wouldn't help at all spraying the panel lines. That is usually done after you've put the primer on. 👍
3 February 2022, 19:20
Guy Rump
Bottom of aircraft has been sprayed with Vallejo Model Air Sky Type S. Next stage is the camouflage base colour. 🙂

Propeller, undercarriage and inside gun turret painted and ready to be added next. The gun barrels on both fell apart when removing from sprue so had to be put back together with super glue. 🙂

Guy Rump
Canopy, gun turret, undercarriage and aerials now all fitted.

The panels have been washed with Ammo Mig washes appropriate to RAF camouflage and Sky Type S.

The rigging and a small amount of weathering to be completed next and then it will finally be finished. 🙂

Thanks also Justin, Acki and James C for your likes. 🙂

I have now completed the Defiant by adding the rigging (underneath) and some minor weathering. The aircraft denotes that flown by Pilot Officer Eric Barwell and Sgt A Martin. I have gleaned some information on Eric Barwell but haven't been able to find anything extra on Sgt Martin.

Born in Suffolk in August 1913, Eric Barwell joined the RAFVR in 1938 to train as a pilot. He was commissioned into No.264 Sqn in February 1940, flying the Boulton-Paul Defiant. His squadron flew in support of the evacuation of Dunkirk, and he claimed two Me109s, two Ju87 Stukas and a Heinkel during this evacuation. However, in the combat with the Heinkel, his aircraft was damaged and he was forced to ditch, managing to put it down in the water between two British destroyers. He and his gunner were rescued by HMS Malcolm.

On 24th August 1940, while scrambling to intercept bombers, he and his wingman were attacked by five fighters, his wingman being immediately shot down. His gunner (Sgt A Martin) managed to shoot down one of the enemy fighters (a ME 109) before the Defiant managed to escape, but it was clear that the aircraft was no match for the German fighters. They were withdrawn from combat and used in a night-time training role. Barwell was awarded the DFC for the six victories scored.

In April 1941 again with Sgt. Martin, he scored a night-time victory over a Heinkel, with a second also probable.

He transferred to No.125 Sqn flying Beaufighters, claiming a Dornier damaged on 1st July 1942. By March 1943, No.125 Sqn were equipped with Mosquitoes. He shot down two Ju-88s in this aircraft, and also recorded his final victory, over a V-1 "doodlebug". He was awarded the bar to his DFC and transferred to various experimental squadrons before leaving the RAF in September 1945. Sadly, Eric Barwell died on 12th December 2007.

Thanks all for looking. 👍

Guy, I'm sure I built one of these from the original Airfix release back in the late '50s-early 60's. Needless to say it wasn't a patch on your beautiful build (and has long since "crashed & burned!!)
