Christopher Mullins This is an older one from Revell but it is one of the few commercial airliners that Revell has that is not totally messed up. It can be a bit hard to find these days but it is worth the build if these kind of aircraft interest you

Christopher Mullins I already built this kit, but I did an after build review for it on YouTube. I think its a really good kit but a couple things that people need to watch out for when they build it. It also has some nice decals in it.
Here is a link to the video.
Treehugger I made sure to get one (1:72) at a nice price early on before the kits became expensive, much more expensive than the X-Wing models apparently. There is also the 1:144 scale version of the Y-Wing which you ought to check out (cheap), which is a nice model to have on the table in front of you.
Fun little detail: So I have a black'ish glass cabinet (the wooden parts painted black), and I've noticed that these small Bandai models that comes with a black stand.. the models looks like they hover in the air inside the cabinet which is a fun illusion. This looks really nice for the tiny (smallest) Star Destoyer model Bandai put out.
29. December 2019, 14:58
Christopher Mullins I have a display case, but its not black, but it may be an idea to get some black construction paper and surround the shelf where I have my star wars models, maybe but some holes in it for stars or something, maybe an idea
1. January, 11:41
Chaz Gordon I have a pile of the Bandai droids to build, the quality of the moulding on those is outstanding, looking forward to see how this one goes together
Christopher Mullins So I started on the cockpit, pilot, Astromech unit, and the main fuselage now, I got he front piece except the interior mainly finished, waiting for the pilot to dry so I can continue painting it, and trying to decide whether I should use the older or newer astromech droid. I already sis some weathering on the front piece, the light grey plastic just does not look the part, these Y wings were old and beat up, so it has to be weathered pretty heavily I think.
29. December 2019, 12:25
Christopher Mullins This is about done, this is not even the most recent picture, the whole middle section is a medium grey now, I will be adding two shades of brown in a wash on the fuselage, then I will be putting some light grey back over it on the outermost parts to give it some shading, the pilot is also finished, this one turned out much better than the pilot on the B wing, skin tones seem to be very hard to get to look right.
2. February, 12:23
Tom The weathering looks great. I have an X-Wing on the bench and after seeing this, I think I will do the same. Is the grey wash branded or your own mix?
2. February, 13:48
Christopher Mullins it is revell 77, i put some paint on it, like crazily fast over a section, let it dry for just a couple of minutes, then wiped off most of it with a q tip dipped in thinner
Christopher Mullins This is actually where I am at now. The medium gray in the middle will not stay that way. I plan on doing a couple of light washes of brown and red brown first, Then on the details sticking out will go a lighter grey to match the front. I have to paint the head of the droid but the pilot is done. This pilot was much easier than the B wing pilot cause hes wearing a helmet, I have a lot of problem trying to so these small faces, not to mention Im not all that good a figures anyways. I plan on graying up the front a little more with some battle damage and such as well.
Christopher Mullins and its finished, ordered some new brushes which I needed to paint the droid. Think it looks pretty good, now I need a snowspeeder and an A wing, and maybe a Tie Interceptor, even though I have the old MPC one to build still.
7. February, 10:49
Tom Excellent, looks great Christopher, great finish!
USS Saratoga (CV-3) US Navy (1794-now) CV 3 | Pacific 193x | Navy grey\Deck grey\Mahogany Flight Deck
2. February, 12:25
Christopher Mullins Here is the USS Saratoga. It is a prewar type, yellow and silver aircraft and a maroon deck. I am waiting on some paint for the hull though, will be using Humbrol 127, best I could find, it is so expensive to order paint from here. got another coat done on the deck and most of the superstructure is finished, so far I have only lost two parts, one wont be noticeable, but one is on top of the bridge, can be seen int he picture of it.
3. February, 08:27
Christopher Mullins The deck is about finished, but I think it needs more red to it, maybe ill try a wash to change the color a bit. Started on the aircraft as well, got 9 out of 24 built but they are gonna take awhile to get em painted. The stack is finished, the rest of the superstructure is built and I got the deck gray on it. I think it is turning out pretty good for my first aircraft carrier, got 2 more to build, the Yorktown (CV 10) ans Akagi as well, and think I want to get the Enterprise CV 6 as well. The rigging isn't going to be easy either, and the only rigging examples I found of it is from other models, it doesn't even come with the little masts though fore and aft so Ill have to make those too.
M M Very nice. I will be following along. I want to try one of these bandi kits.
20. January 2019, 15:30
Christopher Mullins They are easy to build, and the detail seems pretty good I think. A lot better than the old MPC and AMT kits. Never had one of the kits from Fine Molds so I cant compare to that though. They seems to be made for all ages too, a kid could easily snap it together, without any problems or paint and it comes with stickers and decals, so that makes it easier for the kiddies. I wil be getting the Bandai A wing and probably the Y wing as well. Would like an AT AT as well
24. January 2019, 06:55
Christopher Mullins oh and the landing gear, I dont see any, it has just the stand. I dont even know where the landing gear is supposed to be on the B wing, did they even show it on the films? Cant remember. Think I need to watch em again soon though.
Christopher Mullins Got this yesterday and already started on it. Was surprised I found one of these still, and think it looks pretty good for the age of the kit.
4. July 2019, 08:43
Christopher Mullins This is coming along pretty fast, even though it only has a half engine, the underneath still looks descent I think. the rest seems to fit together OK, I dont like how they do some of the seams though, it was the same with the Italeri HEMMT, weird seams. The engine looks like it is a bit crooked too.
5. July 2019, 17:31
Christopher Mullins A couple of problems here, it should have to Sincgars antennas and a Brush guard. It seems like those parts are made by a couple of companies if I can just get them here. Or maybe revell could send me an extra antenae.
5. July 2019, 22:39
Christopher Mullins Gonna do some kit bashing here to get what i need to make one, anyone need the leftovers?
6. July 2019, 16:59
Christopher Mullins almost finished, put some details on it and decals, which I am doing specially with my old unit and everything, so that might take awhile, and gonna have to realign the tarp on top, didnt dry right
Curtiss SB2C-4 Helldiver US Navy (1794-now) VB-88 207 | USS Essex April 1945 | White, Light Blue, Light grey
19. October 2018, 17:27
Christopher Mullins Started another one last night while I was waiting on parts from the Ki 43 to dry. This looks like a great detailed kit, lots of internal detail. This looks like a re release of an old Monogram kit, it is also stamped Monogram 1997 on some parts. Good year, when I graduated. This will be my last WWII US Navy build I think, even though I may someday get a better Corsair because the one I have so so undetailed, it looks like a one of the older models that were really meant to play with back in the day. Anyways, this has good enough detail to be u[p there with the Avenger. Too bad more companies dont do this type of work.
19. October 2018, 17:33
Christopher Mullins Been working on the flaps, there is a lot from the wing you have to take off to get em on, got one side prepped but its taking some time.
23. July 2019, 17:17
Christopher Mullins Well, I've come much further with this one, the flaps are on, the camo is mostly painted, and working now on the painting on the tail. Thinking this one is turning out pretty good, even though it has taken so long, or maybe because Ive spent so much time on it.
2. February, 11:38
Thomas Bischoff Brush painting the Navy 3-tone scheme is a challenge! Looks good to me
4. February, 17:21
Christopher Mullins I like the Testors Navy Blue, but, I cant get it anymore, I have enough to finish this kit, but then, Ill have to go with the Humbrol Navy Blue, which I find is really too dark. I dont really have a problem painting this scheme, I like hand painting camo, even if its doesn't always have the desired border, especially when it is faded, its hard to accomplish with a brush, but I find close enough is good enough. I like my stuff to look good and be as accurate as possible with colors, but I dont have the money to special order every color I should use on every model I have, so I think if its about right its good, and doesn't have to be 100 percent perfect. I have a problem painting the design on the tail, no motivation. Sometimes I dont like Revell very much.
Treehugger Your photos are dark. You can maybe just adjust the camera, but more light is always better imo.
2. February, 12:23
Christopher Mullins Yeah, the lighting has been really bad the last few days, just dark clouds and rain, ill have to bring it into the kitchen, we have some better light there. cant use my light in my den because it shines too much off the paint. BTW, this paint is supposed to be satin and it sure looks pretty glossy to me, gonna require a semi matt clearcoat.
Christopher Mullins So I started on the D4 Judy last week, just got the pictures done though. About the kit, a lot of flash and fit problems. A Gap between the undersides of the wings and the rear of the fuselage which has to be filled and there is a separate part for the underside of the fuselage int he back, this part, I do not know if it was warped or if the molding was just bad, but the shape did not match the rest of the underside, it stuck out on both sides and it was at a shallower curvature, It didnt seem as if I could do much about the angle but I did file the sides so it matched better. These Fine Mould kits are not always cheap so I did expect a better product for the price, luckily I did get it on Ebay a bit cheaper than the normal price.
1. December 2019, 11:54
Christopher Mullins This one is just about finished as well, decals on , will not be weathering it, I just dont like to weather aircraft much, maybe add some black around the exhaust or soemthing, idk, not good at it, tanks I can do.
Christopher Mullins Well, I seem to not be having a lot of luck with windows in cars, this is the third time I have cracked a window trying to clean it up, mainly because they dont pack them well enough and they get scratched, and then i use to much pressure trying to get it clear again. Being that it is a car from a war though, it is conceivable that the windows would get broken sometimes, so it is so I guess. I just cant figure how to get em to look anyways half way decent again.
Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker-B Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily (Soviet Air Force 1918-1991) Red 08
8. November 2019, 09:15
Christopher Mullins Been wanting to build this for awhile. This is one of my favorite jet fighters, the lines just look so sleek cool, I think it looks better than the US fighters, and I like these Russian camo schemes too. Hopefully I can get most of it finished before I have to go back to work next week.
8. November 2019, 09:21
Christopher Mullins Well, the problem with buying stuff on Ebay, I bought this model some years ago, maybe 3 or so, never noticed the photo etched wasn't in the box. Maybe Eduard has replacements, gonna have to search around I guess and not going to have it finished this year probably
10. November 2019, 11:37
Christopher Mullins Think its turning out pretty good despite the missing parts, and I have some mesh from these tamiya tanks, as well as some other metal mesh, which may just be able to replace those parts in the intake.
17. November 2019, 10:42
Christopher Mullins I am really digging the decals on this aircraft, except for the fact they are very fragile. They look really cool, I used some micro set and micro sol on em, made some problems though which I will have to paint over with some blue I have that is very close, but not a perfect match to the blue of the shark. Ill spray it with a coat of flat so it should still match pretty close I think.
Christopher Mullins The Avenger seems to be coming along pretty well. I did a lot more interior detail painting as what it said on the instructions. Wasn't sure about all the colors on the cockpit, so I had to take a best guess looking at other ones I've done. I did the gauges in light grey and touched up the knobs and stuff with a bit of Iron color. Probably should be some that are red but I couldn't seem to find any pictures of the interior of a Helldiver. Had some problems getting the interior of the read compartment together, think it could have been Engineered a bit better really, but in the end i got it.
Christopher Mullins Seem to be missing the photo etch parts, I think then I will try to make the wires on the engine with real wire. Going to have to find something though for the ring that it is attached to, I think I have some old Road wheels from a tank that will fit though.
28. October 2018, 10:09
Christopher Mullins I am repainting the engine because the wright cyclones I have seen have black cylinders. Not a lot of work really. About the ring and plug wires on the front, got an idea for it. I think the right size of insulation from an electric wire will work for the ring and I have enough wire for the plugs. Got the wing painted, built and in place. Think it is looking OK so far.
1. November 2018, 17:32
Christopher Mullins I am using the red color for the flaps, and I think I have to order the Eduard flaps for it. I used Humbrol for this, the only Humbrol color I have, Think its Insignia Red. Its pretty much together, still working on the engine though. Gonna take awhile though because I am gone most of the time now.
Christopher Mullins One Problem fixed, I drilled holes around the wing with my xacto knife and added 28 small brass wires around it into the cylinders using a picture I found of a wright Cyclone on the web. I will cover the wires with wash of black to tone down the color some, but I think it turned out pretty well. Just not sure what to do about the flaps, that will be much harder to fabricate than the wires.
29. November 2018, 15:59
Christopher Mullins So after a very long break with this one because of frustration, I finally got the wing flaps on and started painting it. It will be 3 toned but not like the instructions call, Revell just doesnt have a lot of colors, and the ones they do have are not very accurate, and the mixtures they give are hard to make with this thick paint that they have, so Ill go with the Navy colors from Model Master.
Christopher Mullins I started on the M 30, was thinking it would go fast, but because of work, and flash, pin marks and stuff, it hasnt gone so fast as I thought, but I think it is turning out OK. Painting it in Revell semi gloss dark green.
Fokker Dr.I Deutsche Luftstreitkräfte (Imperial German Air Force 1916-1920) Jasta 2 Boelcke 213/17(Kempf) | 1918 | Olive over light blue
14. October 2018, 10:53
Christopher Mullins The parts trees, some good details here but a lot of the parts are pretty small. Had a lot of trouble getting them off without breaking, and wasn't completely successful with it.
14. October 2018, 11:00
Christopher Mullins Both of the supports for the seat was broken, and it was very difficult to get them off the tree and back together again. same thing for the Machine Guns, one was already broken, and one of them broke as I took it off. I also seem to have lost one of the barrels because when I cut it off, it jumped and Im going to have to do some searching to find it again. I do like Dragon models, but I think this could have been a bit better engineered because the attachment points to the tree are far to thick and too close to the base of the tree for these small thin parts.
14. October 2018, 11:05
Christopher Mullins The top wing support was also already broken, like I got a box full of broken parts. Not sure how Im going to fix it yet. Really, I think these planes are too small for 1 48 scale, 1 32 would probably be better.
15. October 2018, 12:38
Wim van der Luijt try cutting fine parts with a hot scalpel or hobby knife...I use a candle to heat the blade before each cut
15. October 2018, 13:15
Christopher Mullins didn't think about that, i seem to be able to get em off best with a pair of fingernail clippers. Got a big problem with the top wing though, as one of the supports is broken so I have to see if I can create a new one.
16. October 2018, 09:49
Christopher Mullins When I was putting the top wing on one of the struts broke in half and now I cant find the half of it. I may have to get a new model because I have been looking for that thin plastic part for months and it hasn't turned up yet. Good thing they dont cost that much.
3. July 2019, 08:21
Christopher Mullins Well, I found the part of the strut that broke and that was missing, got it glued back together. It seems though that the top wing is too heavy for the parts they included to hold it up because the parts seem to be somewhat bent from the weight after putting it on. So after almost a year, this one is back underways
18. December 2019, 07:49
Christopher Mullins So I got the wing pretty much fixed, but it is a little crooked due to that broken part, and I could not get it any straighter. The top wing seems to be far to heavy for the supports here, it maybe should have been 2 piece, being hollow in the middle may have saved some weight and made it not so heavy. Not sure, well, I got it painted as well. On the pictures it does not look like a solid color but almost like, well, not sure really what to call it, but what I did to get a look that was similar was to first paint it beige, then I went over the beige with an Olive Drab and purposely left brush strokes in it to give that striped look like it looked in the pictures I saw.
