I've started the build of the Tamiya Birdcage Corsair. The plan is to build it with folded wings along with the pilots and ground crew kit.

Thank you Erik and Roland! 🙂
A little bit of an update. I have finished the riveting and the masking of the cockpit and I have also done the pre-shading and marbling before the paint.
I decided to go with a paint set from Hataka this time, so the next update will have to wait until it arrives.

Another update. The camo is finished. Although I'm happy with the end result, the Hataka paints is going to take a while to get used to. They are not like the gunze/mr. color and Tamya that I usually use.
Next up is decals. 🙂

The camouflage and colours look amazing 👍
Do you mind me asking what was happening with the Hataka paints and were you using the acrylic set?
15 September 2020, 19:43
Björn Svedberg
Thanks James!
Yes, it was the acrylic set. I had a couple of things happen. I used the Hataka acrylic thinner to thin the paint for the airbrush and it had quite alot of soapy stuff in it creating bubbles in the paint mix in the cup of the airbrush, which resulted in a very uneven paint spray out of the airbrush. I guess that could just be me getting the mix wrong, but I will probably use tamiya X-20A as a thinner the next time.
The second thing is that I sometimes use Mr.Color Leveling thinner to thin acrylic paints and that did not work at all with these paints. That mix turned into a stringy gunk that clogged up the airbrush.
But I'm sure they will work just fine when I have worked with them a bit more and learned how to use them properly. As I said, I am happy with the end result. 🙂

Thanks for the info... I've got a couple Hataka acrylic sets that I've not tried yet.

I´ll pop in here too - progress looks great so far - I really like your approach to surface wear 👍
16 September 2020, 11:58
Björn Svedberg
Thank you Guillaume, Clifford and Slavo.
Decals are now on so the next step is weathering and some detail painting to finish it up. 🙂
17 September 2020, 11:14
Björn Svedberg
I have done the first stage of weathering with oil washes and a matt layer on top of that. After assembly, I will do some additional weathering and detail painting. I will keep it as clean as I can for this one.

Beautiful work, I enjoy seeing how people paint at what level of subassemblies Vs masking. Your airbrush control is amazing, the preshading is a work of art by itself

Björn Svedberg
Thank you Laurent, Chris, Roland, Clifford and Scott! 🙂
The Corsair is now finished, but I still have the moto-tug and the pilots and crew to finish before I close this project.

Excelent paint job!

Björn Svedberg
Thank you very much for all the feedback, mates! 🙂
I've added the Eduard Essex class carrier deck to the project, so I will have to find some good reference for the painting. It looks like it will be a nice addition with all the weathered wood and steel.😉
22 September 2020, 14:57
Björn Svedberg
Another update. I have started working on the figures and finished the little moto-tug. Next will be some figure painting. 🙂

You are very welcome, Micky! 🙂
Another update. I have finished the drop tank and also worked on the carrier deck. I will probably do some more weathering of the deck in the future. Tyre marks oil spill etc, but as for now I consider it finished. Now I only have the figure painting left to do.

The deck looks absolutely fabulous, great contrast between metal & wood and top mild weathering effects 👍

Thank you very much, mates! You all inspire me to become a better modeler! And the feedback is very much appreciated. 🙂
@Daniel, Thank you, and yes, painting eyes in this scale is something I haven't mastered yet. I promise you that they would look far more creepy if I had tried that.😉

The group of pilots is absolutely impressive, very lifelike! Not just the painting, but also the postures and last but not least the photography! Awesome!
