one option, specially if the windows are rounded, is to drill close to the corners, so have the right shape straight. and then join the four holes forming an X, and remove material with the new blade, and carefully file them to correct shape. try first with some piece of leftover plastic or plasticard

Martin OostromMy wife will kill me if I buy anything else. Today 1:350 Musashi arrived with a pontos set for 1:350 Texas. My birthday was November 24th. I got this Graf Spee from my wife and the kids. Ever since I bought 1:350 Texas, 1:200 Rodney with pontos set, 1:350 Musashi with Flyhawk set, and a kit or 9 at ESM (didn't want to but I was accompanied by some Spanish guy 😉 ) and I got a :72 Catalina for Sinterklaas.
I might smuggle some paint or tools into the house, but kits or add-ons are a no-go for now 🙁

I wasn't satisfied with the keel. Due to the applied pressure to glue the halves, there was a noticeable 'bend'. Couldn't sand it away, so I smeared on some Revell Plasto. That stuff is dry before you know it.... very hard to apply.
While that is curing I finished the de-detailing of the decks. It went okay-ish. This greenish grey plastic is so different to the Revell stuff I'm used to. It's harder, easier to glue, not brittle at all, but harder to sand.

Andreas NiedermayrGive vallejo plastic putty a try, I mean the one with the long tip. It could be applied very precisely and thin. It gives you much more control and the collateral damage is minimized. It hardens not so extremly fast and it could be sanded easier as it will not get so rock hard. And it doesn't smell so bad.

I've got three of them. Ideal for filling small gaps, but in my experience totally unsandable. I cannot get it with a smooth edge.
Peter, the hull wasn't exactly warped. There was a small gap that I closed with just a bit of force. In the end there was a small misalignment that just needs a lot of attention.

Andreas NiedermayrMartin, yes I mean Vallejo Nr. 401, though my tube is black instead of blue. And you're right, sometimes the surface rips of while sanding. Maybe it's be cause the putty needs much time to harden and the connection to the underground is too ‚soft'. But for small gaps , ejector marks etc. it's really good.
I guess I will also try Tamiya or something else like squadron etc.
By the way, I saw the tiny PE parts. Anyone knows the english meaning of ‚Teppichmonster'?

Martin OostromThree times is a charm. Fit on shafts was less than ideal. Same on the kimkeels. Kims were filled with Vallejo plastic putty. Shafts need some thinking. Rudder went like a dream.

Regarding the sore arm, I do have a so called Tennis elbow. Not from modelling, but from a very resisting Ikea closet. The arm just did 'pang' while tightening a screw in an odd stance. So I'm very limited in my movements. 🙁

Around Christmas I had three weeks off. So besides all the family obligations I had quite some time to do the tedious work; cutting and sanding of a lot of parts. Now it's more of all the those parts coming together.
I am getting closer to the dreaded part: painting my very first 1:350 ship in a decent way. 😉

Martin OostromTo be honest, the kit is great. Zero flash, hardly any mild lines. After gluing and sanding the seam is nearly invisible.
The hull will be medium grey, the superstructure will be light grey. By orders of the Master CB. There are some pictures of a fake bow wave, I intend to do that as well.

Fund will be titled, "Raise the Bismarck and sink her again on Pete's bench" Fund. Mrs Hardy might be small but she is a woman to be FEARED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Martin OostromIf only. Real life is in the way. Computer troubles at work led to (too much) overtime. Which led to catching up socially in the weekend which led to too little time for building. Today it's my sons birthday party (sleepover) which will spill over into Sunday midday. By then it's quite possible my daughter wants some daddy time. So perhaps a bit on Sunday evening or late afternoon🙁

That building is the shed in our back garden where we keep our bikes, gardening tools and so on.
We live in the old continent snd room is pretty scarce around here. Our garden is just over 60 square meters and can be considered as above average in size for the Netherlands.
Ditto for the house. Just under 6 meters wide and 10 in length with two floors and an attic is typical for over here. Not US or Aussie standard I guess.

as he is very good with painting and laying tiles and carpet. Good friends like him are hard to find. I would reccomend that you put the stash under lock and key before he gets there though, and I'd search his car before he leaves too. Pretty dodgy characters those Spanjaards.

Peter HardyIt was one of the things I struggled with building only armour before my PoW. Built it, then paint it. Going to building modules really went against the grain! Putting off the "see what it looks like" moment is actually difficult to deal with!

Mmm, I wanted to paint her as in her last days. I was under the assumption that she would be a two tone grey (superstructure light, hull dark) just with some white fake waves.

Martin OostromI think I figured it out. Nowadays I thin my paint way more than before. I need 8 or 9 passes with the paint brush to get a decent coverage. Believe it or not, but all of this was painted with my 0.2 needle, even the primer.

I looked around for you. The PE scalemates.com/kits/120167-eduard-53050-admiral-graf-spee is still available in Poland, but they don't ship to Australia. They do ship to my place, but the price for S&H for 2 sheets of PE is a bit steep.
Tell you what, when the mrs allows me to buy yet another kit, I'll order it in Poland along with the PE for your Graf Spee. Then I put the PE in a regular non-track-and-trace envelope to your place. That way it's more affordable, and a bit of a gamble whether it arrives or not. Do you like living dangerously?

Peter, Alec is from NE Wisconsin, Chicago is in Illinois. They're like quarrelling neighbors, those two states. At least when their brand of football is involved.
Never understood why the Yanks insist in calling it football though. They mostly throw and run with the damn thing.

Peter HardyNo idea Kerry. I tried to watch it one day on tv. Everybody was standing around waiting for motorbikes to appear. They were all dressed up in fancy clobber with helmets and enough padding to stuff all the bras of every schoolgirl in the world! Then a fella kicked a ball to another bloke who caught it. Must have been a lucky catch though 'cause the bloke what caught the ball got down on his knees. Think he said a prayer. When he was sitting on the ground all these other blokes in different clobber came down and looked at him. Then everybody walked off the field and another bloke who was angry at the blokes in the fancy clobber started yelling at the fancy clothes motorbike rider fellas. I think he wanted some fancy clobber too. They all got the ships with him and went and sat down. Then another lot of blokes looking for motorbikes went on the field and stood around in a circle looking at the ground. I think they were working out if they had enough money to catch the bus 'cause there were no motorbikes to be had anywhere. I got bored about then cause I only had to wait half an hour for the bike racing. Valentino Rossi has pretty clobber to wear but doesn't fill it with his Mum's spare winter doona. I watched the bike race for an hour and started to wonder if the blokes on the other channel had found their motorbikes yet. So I flicked back and waited. And waited. And waited. Gave up and went to bed.

Alec KMartin, you are entirely correct on all counts. The football fans (and I beg your brief indulgence for this to mean the American variety) are very much like soccer fans in Europe, although I would never fear going to see a Bears vs. Packers game in Chicago for fear of getting beat up or harassed😉. From personal experience, Chicago is a great city my family and I visit regularly: great foodie town, awesome music and shopping venues, museums etc.
As far as the football/soccer nomenclature is concerned, it's apparently all Britain's fault (per Michigan University professor Stefan Szymanski).
Your Spee is looking magnificent. I started the Heller version some 20+ years ago. When I returned to the hobby, I decided the kit and my earlier unrefined interventions were too coarse to continue. Lately I stumbled on an idea to perhaps finish it as the scuttled version, and build the Trumpeter kit as the ship appeared before the encounter with the Royal Navy. For now, watching and learning with great interest 👍

Patrick HagelsteinLooking at picture 109, when you want a more soft edged camo, try to put a rolled up piece of tape or some Blu-Tac under your mask. This way you have more control over the spray pattern.

Patrick, my build sequence is just wrong on this one. Call it learning. I really should have painted the superstructure parts first, before joining them. Could have asked Lode, but didn't 🙁 now masking is a b***h as a lot of places are hard to reach. Need to find some middle ground here.

I tend to use something similar, blutack, see for instance for my Biber build (Biber OOB | Album by Silenoz (1:35)) and others... can be bought from several stores, most easy one is Modelbrouwers.nl.
@Lode: does this masking agent also creep over time as the similar one from MIG and panzerputty? It works fine, but it tends to run over time like a ripe cheese, and that I don't like so much...

Bart GoesaertFriends of mine build mainly armor, and there it creeps into the holes of the mesh screens, which gives a lot of trouble removing it without breaking. Hence they hardly use it...

Martin OostromFinally. Painted the dark grey, decided to go with a hard edge as I think that looks best. Had some nasty surprise with the liquid mask.... But persevered and triumphed.

For now I sprayed a gloss layer in an attempt to unify all paint layers. I have a filter for dark-grey, I'll try that to get a little bit less contrast between the greys. See what happens 🙂

Peter HardyDamned if I know how the liquid mask is supposed to work. I always get the feathered edges too. Next time I use it I will remove it before the paint actually hardens.

Kerry COXThat is why I like using blutak. You control the edges and how soft or hard you want the demarcation between the colours to be. Sharp or soft.

Bart GoesaertI agree with Kerry, we had the same discussion in Lode's topic. As a degreaser, in paintshops in Belgium we have formule MC, so maybe in Holland too, works like a charm, also after soldering to remove the flux

Well I can highly recommend them. There are two volumes, 1939 - 1941 and 1942 - 1945. You should Google the title to find a lot of pictures to find out for your own if it is included what you want. From my point of view there are all camouflage patterns of any major unit from light cruisers to battleships included, as well as torpedo boats and destroyers.

Martin OostromI put the books on my wishlist. GS is freestyle already and 1/700 Scharnhorst isn't in the planning yet. I'll keep them at the back of my mind for now.
Lode thanks. Not much done lately on any build. Real life is interfering once more. Work is a bit of an energydrainer the last two weeks. Should be better this week (hopefully).
