And I have the first seat on the album! 🙂 Pays to be a night-owl.

Started work on the metal base coats... already starting to look a bit beat up. I was thinking about trying to add lifting panels, and holes and what not... but I think that might be a bridge too far for this build.

Who am I to argue with the weathering master... holes have been poked, roughly in the same spots depicted in the manga story I'm basing this on.

I'll take a belated seat for this. Crashed aircraft project is on my wishlist, so I am here to learn. Looking great btw 👍

Greg, your imagination is inspiring!

Ah, Greg....How big were the cannons that shot him down? When I did my 1/48th scale plane crash my friend asked me the same question. I had to make my holes smaller needless to say. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with this.

Greg Baker
Thanks Tim. In the manga, Shin's Crusader is brought down by a Mig-17, so I struggled a bit with exactly how large the holes would be. Probably a hell of a lot smaller in real life. However, the depiction in the manga shows the holes at least this big, I decided to go with that rather than try to be more realistic. An artistic decision, to be sure, but I think it also lends itself to the visual storytelling that I'm trying to achieve here - Shin didn't just hit a gust of wind or run out of fuel... he got shot down. The scene in the manga also shows the fuselage breaking up behind the cockpit, roughly where the wings attach, so that's why I made the break there too.

I added a few pages of the scene from the manga... for those following along. 😄

Thank you! That helped me understand where your going with this! I'd say you're spot on in this case. Keep up the good work mate!

Thanks Tim! I set down a second coat of Future today to seal up the white chipped paint, so I can repeat the hairspray technique with a layer of grey. Then I'll do it again for the blue paint. One thing I need to figure out is how to balance paint fade. Do I just add some white paint to the mix and call it even? Or does someone have a better technique for fading paint?
24 October 2019, 14:31
Martin Oostrom
I sometimes use a white oil paint after drying. Apply in splotches/spots and blend with a brush mildly moist with thinner. You can play a bit where it fades more. Just beware of streaking, that looks awkward.

I do what Martin does. 🙂

Nice paintjob, as execution of the whole project 👍

Thank you gentlemen. I tried the salt technique for chipping... or at least took a stab at it, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly. I sealed the chipped blue paint with a coat of Future, because otherwise it's too fragile and will continue to shed paint I wanted to keep. However that made the pieces hydrophobic, which led to the salt not sticking to anything, which in turn, made it very hard to paint. I mostly just ended up using my airbrush like a leaf blower and spread the salt EVERYWHERE. The end result was mixed... but live and learn.

11 November 2019, 16:55
Greg Baker
Thanks guys. Unfortunately the tail won't be getting the unicorn marking as I'm a manga purist and the unicorn doesn't show up until the F-5E Shin gets after this one is shot down. I am going to try to get the shark mouth to show a bit though... so stay tuned!

The sand was a bigger challenge than I thought. The "Angel Clay" I've used before seems to have run dry on the "cookie dough" colour so I was forced to go with "Candy Clay" - supposedly the same basic paper fibre clay technology, but I found it a little less forgiving. I did my best to remove the obvious finger prints and handprints that occurred during the application, but I really had to move quickly. I used a bit of clear plastic with a "water texture" to push the clay down into sand ridges, but it was only partially successful. In some of the tight spots it started cracking, so I needed to lay off a bit.

I know there will be some shrinkage while it dries, but I tried to over emphasize the edges around the buried parts so that it doesn't just leave a bunch of craters. Luckily, I think I can squeeze a bit of extra into any cracks and gaps later and fill them - that's my working theory, so we'll see what reality has to say about that.

Perhaps you can hide the cracks under some ridges?
I agree with Bugsy, this is fantastic work 👍

12 November 2019, 06:49
Greg Baker
Thanks Martin. That's a good idea. I think I'll wait a couple of days to see how much worse the cracking is going to get before I start coming up with ways to hide them.
12 November 2019, 07:08
Greg Baker
All right... and we're done. The cracking was pretty bad, so I tried to patch it... which made it... cracked and patchy. So I ended up give it another thin coat of "sand" evenly across the whole thing and then re-setting the pieces in it. Still a few cracks, but it's about as good as it's going to get. Since this is based on the manga version of the F-8E there's no Unicorn mark on the tail, but I added a faded "shark mouth" decal to the front so that it's recognizable as Shin's ride.

Album info

After being shot down in 1979 During the Asran Civil War, Shin's F-8E Crusader has been discovered after spending the last 40 years in the desert. Although Shin survived the crash, it stands as a testament to all the foreign mercenary pilots who didn't.
