Ghibli: If an Ohm falls in the Forest (Nausicaa + Ohm)

Album image #1
Ran across this old boxing at the Hobby Fair - couldn't resist.

Album image #2
The sprues... mostly legs.

Album image #3
Hmmm... there are some... gaps.

Album image #4
Luckily they can be dealt with (more or less) with a bit of epoxy putty as well as some Tamiya grey putty.

Album image #5
Used some extra bits of sprue to fill in some of the gaps and help with the structural integrity.

Album image #6
Also used some epoxy putty along the gaps on the inside. Partially for support, but also to ensure it's completely enclosed...

Album image #7
I'll need to ensure there's no gaps if I want my idea to work...

Album image #8
I also stumbled across this kit... so... why not?

Album image #9
Hmm... I heard the Bandai kit was just a slightly modified version of the Tskuda kit, but those sprues seem quite different.

Album image #10
Yeah... I don't think this constitutes a listing as "New Parts", I'm going to change the entry to "New Tool"

Album image #11
Completely different parts, look, and size... I guess 1/20 Ohms are bigger in the 21st Century...

Album image #12
Yeah... quite different.

Album image #13
What was I doing again?

Album image #14
Ok... that might work...

Album image #15
A whole mess of Ohm eyeballs...

Album image #16
A box of Ohm guts...

Album image #17
Because of the rough surface texture, I'm covering the seams with a combo of epoxy putty and some gravel.

Album image #18
I think it turned out okay..

Album image #19
A coat of green base and some black for undershading.

Album image #20
I dunno. Usually you sand a seam flat... but this is a different challenge. Do you think I did a good job hiding the seam? Or is it still very noticeable?

Album image #21
Now to get started on the... oh my god, how many legs does this thing have!?

Album image #22
After what seemed like a billion pedicures, we have legs! Lots of legs!

Album image #23
Lots and LOTS of legs!

Album image #24
I didn't spend as much time cleaning up the legs on the grey one. They will be a lot less visible when I'm done.

Album image #25
Since this is a dead Ohmu shell, it will need some spores growing off it. Luckily a few partially melted bits of sprue will take care of that.

Album image #26
Another coat of paint and it's starting to look the part.

Album image #27
Now to install the guts!

Album image #28
The eyes are installed and I glued some fibre optic cable to a couple of white LEDs, drilled some holes, threded them through and painted them clear yellow. Sounds so eay when you say it like that!

Album image #29
Reworked the cover for the electronics and masked off the wood.

Album image #30
First ever use of Tamiya lacquer paint... not bad, but I like acrylic better.

Album image #31
The Ohms are now wired into the base... let’s hope this still works.

Album image #32
So far so good... blue fading lights...

Album image #33
But get too close... and RED!

Album image #34
Drilled some holes and placed some plants. Still looks like a bad aquarium... but let’s see if we can change that with some paint and details.

Album image #35
Still works in the dark...

Album image #36
To make it more “toxic forest” and less “Mrs. Harpers’s Class Terrarium” I’m adding stretched (well melted) sprues and some other assorted spore sacks.

Album image #37
Melted sprues and other assorted fungus have been placed and glued together.

Album image #38
A bit of paint really helps, but still too sparse.

Album image #39
Some aquarium plants help add some colour... but only to be used sparingly.

Album image #40
A bit of painted sponge, cut up and glued on really helps.

Album image #41
More colour and a few more details... almost there.

Album image #42
Looks better head on, I think.

Album image #43
Time to get started on the final phase of the project...

Album image #44
Easy enough to cut out the general shape.

Album image #45
A bit of bending, and filing, and suddenly I have something that's starting to look like a Mehve.

Album image #46
It seems to fit.

Album image #47
Now seems like a good time to tear their faces off... better late than never!

Album image #48
I wasn't happy with the yellow feelers, and the fibre optics didn't really work anyway, so...

Album image #49
Hopefully the clear backing will let a bit more light through.

Album image #50
Now for some new tentacles, bent from 1mm clear plastic rods.

Album image #51
A bit of paint on the Mehve and its pilot.

Album image #52
Put it all together, and voila~

Album image #53
The feelers look more organic, and even though its a lot more subtle than I wanted, if you touch the dead Ohm's nose, the feelers light up... sorta.

Album image #54
Just a clear coat and a bit of highlighting to do, but otherwise this one is done!

I stumbled across the old Tsukuda Nausicaa kit at the Hobby Fair in Seoul this past weekend, so I thought, what the heck. After I started working on it, I also ran across the "updated" kit from Bandai. Scalemates lists the Bandai kit as being a rebox with "new parts" of the original Tsukuda, but I'm pretty sure this qualifies as a "New Tool" instead. The parts, the look and the size (both supposedly 1/20) are completely different.

Another great cartoon model from Greg. Awesome!

i am really curious about this one
4 April 2018, 08:29
Greg Baker
Me too... if this one works as planned you'll be able to switch on lights in the eyes, change them from blue to red and adjust the intesity... so far I managed to cobble together a proof of concept circuit, drown in wires and burn myself so many times with my stupid soldering iron I considered starting my own list of things I learned... but the week's not over yet.😉

nice to see one of those... enjoy building these. As with humans, not all crawling things are equally large, as is the case here 😉, just a different screen size for measuring 😉
4 April 2018, 15:27
Martin Oostrom
Great idea Greg. Blue for a neutral state of mind and red for when it's falling in love with you other models 😛
5 April 2018, 05:46
Peter Hardy
How good is that Greg!! Love the idea! I had thought of doing a couple of those Japanese Anime characters but the bug / slug this is waaaaaaay cooler!!!!
5 April 2018, 06:32
Greg Baker
Heh, technically red is when they're enraged... which might be a more likely response to my models. At first I planned tomjust do them both in green, but after studying Martin's lovely ugly Crusader I thought "wait a minute..."

At lunch today I went shopping at the Korean version of a Dollar Store and bought a bunch of supplies. For the grand sum of $10 I made off with a nice wooden cheese tray (which will make a nice base) some natural (looking) sponges (equally good for foliage and exfoliation) and more silly looking fake plants in cute little pots than any man should rightfully need.

Jay Dubya
Like where you are going with this project Greg - looking forward to seeing it all the way through !
Perhaps I might even watch the DVD of the movie I bought a few weeks back (at a weekend car park market - for $2) BEFORE you finish.
5 April 2018, 10:22
Greg Baker
Thanks JW! I uploaded a pic featuring my lunchtime purchases. I think they'll do nicely.

As for the DVD... you need to pop that baby in the machine, pronto! You'll be glad you did!😉

Peter Hardy
They've got bandaids on Greg! Did you hurt them?
5 April 2018, 21:20

😄 LOL

LMAO! They're just recovering from the most hamfisted eye surgery you've ever seen...

Nice "touch"😉
Will you fit the circuitry and sensor in the Ohmu or in the base?
7 April 2018, 17:11
Dave Flitton
Cool!!!
7 April 2018, 18:16
Peter Hardy
Great Scott Greg! You are so horrible that you have to build your own pet, and even that won't let you touch it!
7 April 2018, 21:09
Greg Baker
After what I've put it through... I wouldn't let me touch me either!

So, after carefully calculating the needed resistence and soldering 14 x 2 (red and blue) resistors onto the RGB LED bulbs, the good news is I still have both red and blue lights. The bad news is the blue lights don't wanna turn off when the red ones come on anymore. Hopefully that just means a bit more fiddling with the settings and I haven't screwed something up irreversibly.
9 April 2018, 16:05
Peter Hardy
You mean this isn't a kit with electronics and instructions included?
9 April 2018, 20:53
Greg Baker
Nope. Pics #2 and 9 show everything that came in the box. Everything else is me drawing circuits in crayon, watching and rewatching YouTube videos and reading more about diodes, resistors, capacitors and transistors than I ever thougt I would.
9 April 2018, 21:54
Peter Hardy
What a head fluk!
9 April 2018, 23:33
Greg Baker
Heh. After looking at it this morning (while getting yelled at by my wife to go to actual work), I'm thinking this is just a case of the resistor values screwing with the op amp's voltage comparison. I think i had it set so when blue's voltage was higher than the set value they were on, but lower turned them off, at the same time the comparison turned red on. By lowering the voltage on the blues, they no longer meet the threshhold to turn off... or maybe vice versa... or, upside down...

If that sounds like I'm trying to explain it to myself, that's because I am... 😮
10 April 2018, 00:45
Peter Hardy
Sorry Greg, I was having a snooze, What was that?
10 April 2018, 00:47
Greg Baker
Lemme tell you a joke instead... a guy walks into an electronics supply store in Seoul and asks for some resistors. The clerk says "how many ohms do you need?" Guy says... "I dunno... just enough for two... but one's dead..."

😢
10 April 2018, 00:51
Michael Hickey
Cool wiring set up.👍
10 April 2018, 00:58
Peter Hardy
LOL!!! Bet that got a laugh out of the salesman! Did you get to work today?
10 April 2018, 01:00
Greg Baker
I was a bit late to the office this morning... but I worked twice as hard until lunch to make up for it. As for the salesman... I'm not sure he has a sense of humour... or much personality. Sniffing the solder vapours too long I think...
10 April 2018, 01:46
Peter Hardy
I think Mrs Baker has won her battle with Mr Baker. Does Greg dare to spend more time on the slithering slimy light emitting slugs? Stay tuned!
11 April 2018, 11:38
Greg Baker
Hah! I'm still working on this... I just have posted an update because most of my work has been cutting wires and testing connections. I wasn't happy with how my sensor was turning out, so I upgraded it... but now I've got a whole new set of problems and things to learn. So much so that I've shifted work onto a display for my Tintin rocket that seemed a bit more manageable and a good warm up project before I continue with this one.

It'll be worth the wait I hope. 🙂
11 April 2018, 15:25
Greg Baker
No sooner do I post this than make a make a major (for me) breakthrough on the Ohm project, while the Tintin project suddenly seems harder than I thought. So nevermind that gibberish about warm up projects...😉
11 April 2018, 22:34
Donald Dickson II
Very interesting
11 April 2018, 22:41
Peter Hardy
It's alright Greg, we are all very patient.
11 April 2018, 23:25
Greg Baker
Appreciate the patience, but hopefully you won't have to wait too long. Now that I've got it to do more or less what I wanted, now I'm trying to see if I can do something fancy too!
12 April 2018, 22:32
Peter Hardy
I will be impressed if it is well enough to have the band aid removed!!

13 April 2018, 11:51
Rene Scheiblich
Still looks a bit hamfisted with the 'eyes' hanging out, but the effect is really cool! 😉 and the bigger sensor works nice.
And another glider!😮
13 April 2018, 15:40
Greg Baker
Got some paint on this one finally. A green base coat and some black undershading on the..l panel lines.😉

Usually you hide a seam by sanding it as smooth as possible, but this has been a bit of a challenge. I'm not sure I'm happy, but that could also be because I'm dreading getting started on the legs... there's a LOT of them.
7 May 2018, 14:42
Bart Goesaert
Nice thing with the electronics... Seam looks well hidden... How did you manage? I would apply some mr. Surfacer on the seam and then before it dries pull it out with some spunge. some slight sanding afterwards to break the tips and finished... will those legs be very visible?
7 May 2018, 15:53
Greg Baker
Thanks Bart. That's a good suggestion. I used some 2-part epoxy putty with some smashed up aquarium gravel for grit and then just applied it over the seam as randomly as possible and then sanded down the rough esges once dry. It worked alright, but there are still a few spots where the makeup looks a bit caked on.
7 May 2018, 22:16
Donald Dickson II
Honestly, had you not shown the before paint pic, I would not have known for sure where you applied your mix. Great job and great idea!
7 May 2018, 23:37
Spanjaard
good luck with those legs!
8 May 2018, 00:05
Nam Soo Lee
It remind me when i was a kid. Nice job 🙂
8 May 2018, 00:40
Greg Baker
Thanks guys. As I start cutting legs the less interested I am in making each one "perfect". I guess I'm a bit lazy, but since this is a snap-together kit, the plastic for the legs is a soft-n-bouncy vinyl and very tough to sand away any flash/seams. I think a bit of trimming with a razor and a blind-eye will be the solution.

Also, is it only me, or is it strange that Nam Soo used to be an insect when he was a kid? 😄
8 May 2018, 02:13
Nam Soo Lee
lol That kit design came from japan anime 'nausica' which is very old. 🙂 ps. I wasn't an insect. 🙂
8 May 2018, 03:40
Greg Baker
Heh. Sorry. I like to joke around. I was pretty sure you weren't an insect, now or when you were a kid. 😉

I'm also very familiar with all the Ghibli anime, it's one of my three main model projects - strobez

in this case they will have blue eyes 🙂
Nice work!
17 May 2018, 15:23
Greg Baker
I think I left the dead ohm out of the freezer too long... something's growing on it...
19 May 2018, 15:40
Martin Oostrom
Looks like it's getting leg on it's back as well. Creepy…… You sure it was dead? 😉
19 May 2018, 20:51
Greg Baker
I'm sure it's dead. I did the autopsy already...

To prove it, here's another little update video. Not strikingly different in function from the previous videos. However, after working on my Tintin Rocket Launch clock, I discovered that the way I'd had it set up before was almost assured of frying my microcontroller in a ball of flame. So I had to rewire everything and redistribute some of the power draw (as well as lessen the current overall).

All the eyes are now wired and glued in place and it all fits inside the Ohm body. He still gets angry if you get too close though... so touchy!

22 May 2018, 22:40
Greg Baker
Heh, thanks guys!

Peter, I'm not quite sure if you're serious or not (it's sometimes hard to tell) but if you're at least semi-serious I'd be happy to wire up the guts for you to install in one of your own. Now that I know how to do it I'd be happy to send you a ready-to-install set of lights at cost.
22 May 2018, 23:36
John Thomas
What kind of Moster is this? Very cool
22 May 2018, 23:59
Peter Hardy
Probably the best outcome! Yes I am serious, if you have time I'd LOVE to build one!!
23 May 2018, 00:49
Greg Baker
Thanks John! The Ohmu is the main giant insect from the Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki animated film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - en.wikipedia.org/wik..ey_of_the_Wind_(film)

It's highly recommended if you like post-apocalyptic feudal style sci-fi with a strong environmental message... or... giant bugs.

Peter - PM incoming...

It's a cyborg 😉
23 May 2018, 04:25

Just kidding, Nice work, and a lot of them wires
23 May 2018, 04:26
Spanjaard
Greg, maybe you could add a diagram of the circuits, components, etc. And the list of specific components. It would help to those who want to replicate
23 May 2018, 08:22
Nam Soo Lee
Oh, shit. so many LED works. lol
23 May 2018, 13:18
Greg Baker
That's a good idea Spanjaard. I've actually been working on a blog strobez.ca that features all my project builds in more detail so I was planning on giving detailed instructions of how I went about this project there. However, there's no reason I can't post the circuit diagram and components list (and arduino code) here for anyone who's interested.

Hey Nam Soo... check it out! I added two more LED lights. The settings are a bit off and need to be adjusted, but the proof-of-concept seems to work. I bought one of those cheapo plastic fibre optic lamps and started doing some surgery on it. The main problem is that it's not easy to bend the fibres without damaging the internal core that carries the light.

nice blog 🙂
24 May 2018, 17:53
Greg Baker
Thanks for visiting the blog Spanjaard!

Added just one update pic. I got the eyes installed and then I installed the feelers. It sounded so simple... I glued the ends of some fibre optics scavanged from a cheapo dollar store lamp to a couple of white LEDs, then drilled a bunch of tiny holes in the mouth piece and fed them through and painted them all with clear yellow Tamiya acrylic. What a nightmare in practice though.

My first attempt to glue the fibre optics to the LEDs using a clear bit of tube was a disaster. I used hot glue which was apparently hot enough to melt the fibres (Duh!). I used white glue on my second attempt but then feeding that mess of spaghetti through a bunch of holes was a real pain. The fibres are a bit brittle and prone to snapping off at the most inconvenient moments.

Oh, well. I got it done, not as many (or as bright) as I'd have liked, but fooling around any further would have led to dangerous levels of frustration and Ohmus may have been harmed in the process... and the likelihood of satisfactory success was remote. It is what it is. 🙂

I believe it! I am still waiting for mine to arrive from Korea ready for display!
23 February 2019, 22:31
Greg Baker
Oops! I totally forgot about that, Peter! Let me get this one finished off and I can fix that.😉

Anyway, the Ohms are now wired to the base and the electronics still work, so that's a win! Now to fill out the dio. The plants are a little too green and lush still, but we can fix that. I hope. 🙂
24 February 2019, 14:07
Donald Dickson II
Damn that was quick! LOL I think it looks great as is. But then I have never seen the movie.

That looks awesome, mate.👍👍👍

Wonder if the Bandai Ohm is a result of genetic engineering or hormone feeding. Much like cars are redesigned for the American market maybe they want more Ohmu for their buck.
25 February 2019, 00:53
Greg Baker
That's a very good question Matthew. The old Tsukuda kits were linked as "updated parts" with the Bandai ones... but it's pretty clear, besides both being Ohms and depicting the same scene from the movie... they're completely different beasts. Makes me wonder about the Nausicaa gunship kit as well - well all the Bandai Ghibli kits for that matter. I have almost all of them, but the Ohm is the only one I have from Tsukuda to make the comparison.

Incidentally, last night after I finished wiring up the base (but before I threw all the foliage on and plugged it in) my wife walked by and said "You know, just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD... that disgusting thing better not start glowing..." 😄

I guess this one's staying out of direct line-of-sight.😉
25 February 2019, 02:34
John Thomas
You know Greg, glowing in the dark would be pretty cool
25 February 2019, 13:03
Greg Baker
I know I started this project before some of you were born, but nothing else was going right, so I pulled this one off the shelf and got to work. Adding the plants still makes it look like a dollar store aquarium, but a bit of paint and some details should change that... I hope.

I think it looks freaking great.

Slavo Hazucha
Wow this is so cool! 👍 By chance I saw the movie earlier this year, never thought there are models of this... Looking forward how you finish it. The light effects are superb, but that is hardly surprising in these circumstances😉
2 August 2019, 19:05
Greg Baker
Thanks guys! To make it a bit closer to the film's "Toxic Forest" and less "Mrs. Harper's class terrarium" I melted a bunch of sprues, glued together some little styrofoam pellets and made some "angel clay" eggs of various sizes. I'm starting to get the vibe I was looking for.
3 August 2019, 00:09
Nathan Dempsey
Nice Greg. Looks more like the giant fungus from the toxic forest in the movie.

Slavo Hazucha
Definitely an improvement 👍

Just more outstanding work
3 August 2019, 12:48
Greg Baker
Thanks guys. I added some more... stuff. It might look like a big mess, but I'm trying to balance out the presentation so that I can layer more and more details on top. The fact that it's still all white is starting to blend all together, so I think maybe it's time to start painting and placing.
4 August 2019, 22:59
Chris Greathouse
It looks like a forest worthy of the Ohm, as always spectacular work Greg!
4 August 2019, 23:09
Greg Baker
Thanks Chris. With a bit of paint, it's starting to come alive... and not just look like I dumped a bunch of stretched and melted sprues all over the place... at least I hope so!
5 August 2019, 16:02
Chris Greathouse
They look like fungi branches and spores... even without paint, I think your secret is safe my man ;P

Quit being so awesome Greg! 😛 Everyday I come to your Ohm forest thinking it can't get any cooler, then I visit to have my mind blown! I might have a bias for the Ohms and Nausicaa. But Still!!
6 August 2019, 19:50
Greg Baker
Thanks guys. This one stalled out for a while because the base was a bit overwhelming, but now that I've found the groove it's coming together. The main bits are in place... now I'm just adding a few more details here and there.

I feel almost silly posting the incremental updates, but it's at the "a little bit more here... some over there..." stage. A bit of "weathering" is going to push the base across the finish line. Then I can start the final "cherry on top" stage and this long awaited project will be done!

Been spying on this one for a while now Greg, can't wait to see her done.👍

No need to spy Michael, there's plenty of room down front.

Ok... last major bit underway... a 1/144 Nausicaa figure, her Mehve glider and the eyeball you never noticed was missing...😉

Martin Oostrom
Those Ohms are huge in comparison. Keep them in Korea will you? No need to send them here to eat my house or car!

I never notice a missing eyball... When it´s gone, it´s gone...😉 Seems that with the fairly little lady in place, it´s inevitably nearing the grand finale! Maybe the right time to touch the subject of what role the 1:72 Early Sturmtiger atached to this project has to play?
8 August 2019, 15:36
Greg Baker
Thanks guys, and yes, the final curtain call is looming for this project. Once Nausicaa and her glider are done, I just have a couple of little touch ups I wanted to do and we'll call it even. As for the 1:72 Sturmtiger... well that's another Nausicaa project project for another day. My plan is to turn it into a Torumekian Battle Tank... [img1] [img2]

Can you PM me when you start the tank? That's going to be rad!

Sure thing, Chris. That one might be awhile though...

Those tracks will be a joy to change... That glider puts the size of the Ohm's in perspective... ground work looking a whole lot better like this.

i thought they were much smaller... what a pair of monsters!

Nathan Dempsey
Greg should do the scene where thousands of them are coming across the landscape...
9 August 2019, 20:49
Chris Greathouse
@Nathan, With or without the hot air balloon and the hurt baby ohm leading the enraged mass? That'd be a challenge for sure, but awesome.

I have to ask you Greg - what is the correct collective noun, is it a yoga of ohms?
10 August 2019, 06:34
Greg Baker
No it's an Ohmmygawd...
10 August 2019, 08:25
Chris Greathouse
Yup... That's what I'd call it to, if I saw a big group of Ohm... LOL. That picture is killer, thanks for the share, very impressive. Did anyone else see the tiny baby Ohm in the pic? Cute.
10 August 2019, 08:37
Greg Baker
I'd seen that pic before, but it was tricky to find again. There's a group in Japan called the Miyazaki Mecha Modellers Club. They've done some AMAZING work.

Anyway, now that I'm almost done, I decided to tear the faces off both of them and try and fix the yellow tentacles. There's a capacitive circuit in the dead ohm, so that if you touch it, the yellow tentacles are supposed to light up on the live one. The circuit works, but the fibre optic cables never worked as I planned. First, they can't be bent without killing the internal light structure, and second, not enough light was getting through anyway. So I pulled off the mouth and shoved in some flat clear plastic (leftover from my Land Over project). Once I put the legs back, they'll still block most of the light, but I'm hopefully it will work better.

Love it !!
really captures the graphic novels 🙂
Well done Greg, I really like this one 🙂
10 August 2019, 14:30
Greg Baker
Thanks Choppa! I was thinking about you when I was working on the 1/144 scale Mehve glider... "Is this the right shape? would Choppa approve?"😉

Alex K
Errr... may I ask a stupid question? The two Ohm kits, the Bandai and the Tsukuda, despite their differences, were both supposed to be in 1:20 scale, no? So what about that 1:144 scale glider? I am probably missing something here - but just thought to ask.
10 August 2019, 23:55
Greg Baker
If you build the kit at 1/20, it's the scene from the film where Nausicaa tries to stop the baby Ohm from entering the acid lake.... but mama Ohm looks exactly the same, just a WHOLE lot bigger. So as long as you leave out the giant Nausicaa, and you stick a 1/144 scale glider in front of it... the Ohm magically grows to 1/144 scale.😉

Alex K
OK, got it (haven't watched the film yet, watching Laputa for the time being😉 ) - thought so when I finally noticed the baby Ohm Chris mentioned in the linked picture... Ta! (ok, I'm slowly discovering Miyazaki's universe!)
11 August 2019, 03:43
Greg Baker
No worries, take your time. There's no need to rush through Miyazaki's work. I've only got a few more things to do on this one (updated pics soon). Then I think I'll focus on finishing the 1/144 Porco Rosso build...😉

I'm also cooking up a really tiny 1/160 dio of the car chase scene from Castle of Cagliostro. Impossible to find 1/144 cars, so "N" scale (1/160) is the next best thing. Cars already ordered.😉

Choppa Nutta
hehe, you know how love the Mehve 😄 😄 😄
I do enjoy your work Greg, you choose interesting themes and produce charming results 🙂

Greg Baker
Thanks guys! Well this one is 95% done. All that's left is to give it a spray with future and maybe add a bit of painted highlighting. But all the elements are in place so, it's "practically done". I'm glad I tore their faces off at the last second. I replaced the "never really worked" spikey "yellow feelers" with one made from some heated/bent 1mm clear plastic rods. I like the organic look/feel much better. The capacitive touch switch was a pain to try and adjust, but it's there and it mostly works. Touch the dead Ohm on the nose and the yellow feelers light up ever so slightly. I just couldn't get enough light traveling down the clear plastic to make it worth the trouble. Oh well... I tried.

I do have to say, pending Choppa's tumbs up, that I'm proud of the 1/144 Nausicaa/Mehve. They came out better than expected.

OK, the new feelers are MUCH better! It totally gives a sense of motion and life. Love it!
11 August 2019, 14:44
Robbie
uh oh - one of the eyes from the grey one is lying behind the little character (ohm).
11 August 2019, 15:03
Greg Baker
Yes... indeed it is. 🙂 That's actually done on purpose Robbie. In the film, Nausicaa scavenges an eye cover from an Ohm corpse (they come in handy...), so this is a scene "inspired by" that one.

Thanks Don! This is more or less how I always wanted them to look, but I was trying to get the fibre optics to work so I had to make a sacrifice. However, I was never satisfied with the result, so it wasn't worth leaving the feelers that way (even though the did throw a bit more light... just not enough).
11 August 2019, 15:21
Robbie
Well dang, I did not know it was dead. I also got the names backwards, Ohm are the critters not the figure. Not the other way around. The things you learn on this site is amazing 😛

Album info

While exploring the Sea of Corruption, Nausicaa comes across the recently shed shell of an Ohm. Since it's in pristine condition, she sets about removing one of the eye shields – made from a super-strong yet lightweight material that would make it a perfect gunship canopy replacement. While relaxing and contemplating how the Ohm sees the world though one of its 14 eyes, the calm of the toxic forest is suddenly broken by an enraged Ohm.
