Interesting. I wonder how tricky/easy it would be to insert clear parts for the bridge windows.

What kind of surface finish did you have in mind?

I've painted my subs with some black'ish color + gloss coat + sating varnish, but I think I will use rubber black from now on. Admittedly, not sure what rubber black would look like on a submarine.

Initially, all subs are rubber black, but then, salt dries and becomes the predominant feature. So lightly powder the whole exterior with pastel white, sealed with semi gloss clear.

Welcome guys! @ Treehugger, the sail is a one piece affair with only the top and the dive planes to be added. I think it will be possible to drill out the six windows and fill them with Kristal Klear after painting to get that 'glass' look. I chose not to in order to keep this build 'simple'. But as I said, I think it can be done! 👍
On the color part; looking at pictures the colors look to be quite stark red for the lower hull (so, not the typical brownish red, hull red normally is) and quite saturated black for the top parts. I will however, go for a very dark (maybe a bit blueish) grey to make the panel lines pronounced with a black wash. The finish I saw in pictures ranges from a satin to quite flat. I'll have to play with that before putting down the final sealing coat. Hopefully I'm able to finish the red parts today when I get home.

That went a whole lot quicker than anticipated! 😮 I was on a roll with my red (well pink....) and figured 'Why don't I start some masking?". With the masking on it's such a small step to mixing up some batches of dark greys. Now it's time for a night of thorough drying before putting on a gloss coat for the decals and wash. After that, it's time to ponder about that final coat again. 😉

😄 Apart from the medium they operate in, not much difference.

I wonder if maybe a brush and pigment is more controllable than airbrushing on any type of weathering.

This is only the basic painting stage. The fine weathering is yet to follow.

Thank you Roland! I was intending to bring it to next week's club meeting but thought I could finish it for yesterday's meeting as well. Took some elbow grease and cursing in the process but finished it after a couple of hiccups. Which reminds me that I do this for relaxing not for speed. 😄

Thanks Hans, much appreciated! 🙂 So, Character Flesh (2) is your favorite too when it comes to hard cold steel objects? 😉 But seriously, I really love the GX 114 as a flat coat! Too weird it acted up on me yesterday though...

@ Treehugger and Kerry, I didn't have time to come in with some refined touches with oils and pigments and now it's residing in the Norman Hobby Town shop until next week's meeting with the other of two modeling clubs I'm in. After I take it home again, I might put a smidgen of oils and pigments in selective spots to lend it just that extra touch of character before I put in my living room display.

I know I'm very late to the show but that's some outstanding work. Very well done! I have that kit on order so I hope you don't mind me copying your work 🙂

Absolutely not Clair! 🙂 Please use my example freely! 👍 It's a great kit and went together really well. You can see in the pictures that the bow has some issues, but other than that, it fits perfectly.
