Red LEDs under cotton balls spray painted black. Taking good photos of it was half the fun, I had to set up a camera on a tripod and take HDR photos in near complete darkness.

@Rui they don't, my original idea was to repurpose one of those LED tea lights, but it was far too dim. This is the result of about a dozen LEDs in the base and two more sticking out of each hatch.
