Lockheed article 343 S/N 56-6676 was a U-2A delivered to test site on October 16, 1955. Used for training in 1956–57, and then for test and development. Converted to U-2F in 1961. It was loaned from CIA to USAF during Cuban Missile Crisis.
On the morning of October 27, piloted by USAF Major Rudolf Anderson, it departed its forward operating location at McCoy AFB, Florida, and at approximately 12:00 p.m. EST, the aircraft was struck by a S-75 Dvina (NATO designation SA-2 Guideline) SAM missile launched from Cuba. The aircraft was shot down and Major Anderson was killed.
