good work. i really like the inside of the building, with the pictures and all the details. lovely! telephone, maps... fantastic 🙂
i am sure that there are much better diorama builders that could give better tips. but i would drop a few drops of "dirt" (oil stains etc) in the area where the planes are being serviced.....
the grass looks ... to even? i am unsure if people were busy making it look so even at war time... it looks a bit as a garden. and i would also believe that the vehicles would have left some marks on it, specially the one filled with petrol
anyway, i think it is a nice dio. and a nice result being the first one. good that you can not see my first, before the digital era, and i do not have pictures of it 😛

ah, and i love the dog chasing the pilot, cool idea.
where did you find the tiny newspaper, or you print it yourself from some picture? really nice

Great looking little diorama, gorby! The details are what makes it so interesting, the pictures, the dog, it all adds to the 'story'. Well done, and thanks for sharing!

Very interesting and nicely done! Especially it being your first one! All of us have to start some where. In time after you do a few more you will notice a thing or two that you wished you knew about when you did this and what it takes to get that more realistic look. Again great start, we love it!

Wow, this is a great job gorby. Lots of action to be seen on your dio. The guy with the toolbox next to the refueler is great. and love the dog chasing the pilot. The details inside the hut are lovely, specialy like all the posters, booklets and the blackboard. Lovely touch with the photos of your mum. Super!

Thanks all for your comments, means a lot coming from such excellent modellers as yourselves (and so discerning too):
Spanjaard: Good point about the stains on the 'concrete'. It's the first time I've done static grass, and I learned a number of things along the way, firstly I should have experimented beforehand. I thought is would be quite fragile stuff, therefore easy to add tyre tracks after-ward, but I can't get the bloody stuff to lie down now! I also didn't realise it would look as perfectly even as it does, but live and learn. The colour is also much more vivid than I hoped.
The newspaper and all other printed material (posters, maps, booklets etc.) were originally obtained from my friend Google, edited in Gimp to clean up or alter, reduce in size and sharpen the image then printed.

Glad you like the dog, that was the figure that required the most 'surgery'. In order to mould it in one piece, Airfix modelled it in such a bizarre pose the only thing that would make it believable, is if it was having a fit after being hit by a 50,000 volt lightning bolt.
🙂

ha ha ha ha, really good the comment about the dog 🙂
i like the colors of the grass, it is nice. different shades of green/yellow/brown, looks really good to me. sorry to hear it is so hard convince it to lie down.
you can make experiments (i a separate piece, not in the dio please), maybe some piece of metal, and then apply some heat , or some heavy object left there with some weigh on top, for a few days.
lovely touch the pics of your mom, that gives the dio a very personal touch. thanks for the info about the magazines etc.

Thanks for the comments Spanjaard, The trouble is that my head is in 'next project mode', so it may stay as it is and I'll build on the experience for the next dio.
Maybe I should have mentioned that other than the photos of my mum, there is another personal aspect to this build as well. Both my granddads were in the RAF at the time, one was military police, so I have decided that he is the figure by the door of the hut (it actually looks like he did in later life): and the other was ground crew, so he is the one in overalls (but looks nothing like him). In fact he was a coach trimmer/upholsterer and he repaired damaged canvas on Hurricanes, Swordfish etc.

The interrior is worth to be a dio of its own 👍

It is like Timothy wrote. In some weeks you will find things to be improved. Dio building is learning by doing as well as analyzing works from other modellers to get new ideas.

The level of detail is just stunning! Give yourself a huge pat on the back 🙂

Thanks Noob - I've decided I need chocolate more than a pat on the back, so I'm happily chomping through a bar at the moment. I've been told on another forum that it lacks one essential 1940's item - an ashtray, drat, I'll have to start again. Thanks for you comment - much appreciated. 🙂

Nice dio!
ILike the variety of details👍

If you're not quite happy with the grass, try it with different oil paint filters and some drybrushing.
That can change a lot.

gorby
Thanks Simon.
I had considered airbrushing different shades onto the grass but I hadn't thought about using oils and dry brushing. Thanks 👍

Thanks very much everyone. I'm surprised this one has cropped up again. 👍
Spanjaard: The grass in my second dio was 100% better - much more realistic. This first dio taught me a lot about static grass (and what not to do).

I've only just seen, as it pre-dates my time on here... This is marvellous Gorby 👍 I admire greatly those that can invest time and talent in creating dioramas - yours tells the story brilliantly complimented by great photography... Plus, that looks like a wall any airman would be proud of! 😉

Album info

I've been working on this for the last few months – this dio is my first born, so be gentle.
It's 1/48 and consists of:
Airfix 'Battle of Britain, Ready for Battle' set (amazingly good value),
Italeri Mk.I Hurricane,
and an entirely scratch built dispatch/billet hut, including corrugated roof & contents.

A few words on the build:
Airfix – great,
Italeri – awful,
hut & contents – enjoyable.

Rivet counters please note: It's just a bit of fun and not intended to be a totally accurate representation of an RAF base, so please take with a pinch of salt.

Thanks for taking the time to take a gander.
