Who's got ideas on how to keep this from looking toy-like? It was a gift and i want to do it up right.
I remember the guy who originally did the eagle graphic. It was great to see the recognition he received for this and it make it to a Revell box cover. Had to buy one, this will be a stellar display!
This is the only model i have left from my childhood. I built the original release when i was 9. At the show in Indianapolis Indiana I found a sealed original!! Bought it for $40. I plan to build it out of the box and show them side by side almost 50 years apart. I'm stoked about this!

Nice project, do the parts fit well of this kit?
It takes alot of work to get them to fit. You can make it happen...this is my 3rd one and the 1st that i got to fit without trimming and bondo- pic 21. Dryfit, align, dryfit, align, then assemble multiple parts at once to maintain alignment - pic 31.
👍, I have the two bobs f-5e blue/grey saints on 1/32 waiting for a decent kit... 🙂 , kitty hawk overall better than the older Hasegawa I think?
Overall, yes a better kit. They did some cool improvements and the detail is reallt stellar in alot of places (just shallow). Having the Hasegawa kit though makes a great kit combo. It has both seat versions available, the aoa probe, the in air refueling probe if you do an F version, and a deeper cockpit tub to name the major ones.
cool looking jet, great work!
My Afghan camo adversary aircraft, affectionately known to my wife as the chocolate covered banana, is complete! The finishing touches were the fuel drain tank, fire extinguisher, and the oxygen hose hanging outside the cockpit. With a sunny day here in Cinci I grabbed some shots in natural light. Enjoy the show guys!
Great work, nice sharp camo with some careful fading, looks very nice, that sidewinder front part is one of the best paintings / colors that I've seen, if it's just the real AIM. Is that just one metallic color? Looks somewhat like burnt steel?
Thanks Mark 🙂 it's 1 parts olive drab and 3 part beige metallic. Edit- I'm using MCW acrylic lacquer so different brands might need a different ratio. My attempt was to get that light olive drab kinda look that the seeker head seems to have.
Beautiful work 👍 Congrats!

Hi Chris, nice project. Any more informations? It looks like you're building it out of the box?
And you paint with brush?
Hi Norbert thx! Yep, I'm building out of the box. My focus has been on learning some new techniques and trying them out. Primarily to paint the deck and make it look like wood. I'm using oil paints over a base of deck tan to attempt this part. The camo is all Vallejo paint sprayed with an airbrush. I plan to paint the searchlights and pompoms and the little stuff by brush. Easy to since since I'm using Vallejo Model Color paint.
tried a technique i thought up for the chipping on the hull. i used the lacquer paint for airbrushing. Thinking the very thin nature of it would allow it to be applied in a splotchy pattern. i poured some in a cup then dipped a sponge into it. Dabbed the excess off the sponge and applied it along the hull.
next i moved on to weathering the hull. Standard stuff here. It's alot about technique so i keep trying to get the hang of it. Oil paints used for rust, algae at and above the waterline, and a gray mix to establish the waterline and show some streaking down the hull. The red won't be seen much at all in the ocean scape i have set up, but for the few places it will show i rubbed the gray along the hull to try and fade the paint a bit.
Hope you enjoy the build. Feel free to critique or ask questions anytime.
The deck look great and the bow splash is novel too 😄 (Couple of the pic in the middle are upside down!)

Wow thanks gang! Appreciate the props
Excellent job from A-to-Z! 👍 - basically ready to take off, looks like 1:1 scale😉
What did you use to achieve the gold sheen on pic 38?
Thx Slavo! I used a plastic bead from a necklace my daughter had lol all that was required was a gloss coat.

Nice work on this massive kit! When my father was in the Army in the late 50's / early 60's, he was one of the Heavy Vehicle Operators that drove the tow tractors moving this thing all over Germany during the Cold War. You've inspired me to put all my other modeling projects on hold and build one in his honor (he passed away in July). It's rare to see anyone taking on this beast of a kit. Thanks for sharing! I just ordered one online. 🙂
Awesome, I'll have to watch for your project to crop up!
Nice choice, Chris. I built the kit myself and I know it takes a lot of space. Interesting to see it out of the box, because I totally tore it apart... Did you build a lot of artillery since?
Thanks Steve. No artillery yet. I did pick up the long tom tho.probably a winter build this year ????
Robert did he ever get that monster stuck? There's some tight spots in Europe! I met one of the communication officers at an event our club held at the local VFW. He had some great stories. My favorite was fire it, jump in your foxhole, wait for the blast to pass and fire again haha.
Yeah he's said it was easy to get the tractor stuck or jack knifed due to the irregular drivability of the thing. Most people don't even know this thing ever existed!
When people see the model, they think it's science fiction.

If you are interested, here are two links to a german forum where similar objects have been tackled:
Maybe they help during your work.
Thanks! Got some good photo references there.

Looks like you're off to a great start!
Yowza! The lighting looks awesome!
Dang thanks guys! I'll have some more updates in a day or two. Working on assembly now so once I put a coat of primer on will update the shots. After looking at what it takes to paint the Aztec pattern I ordered some decals. Time will tell if that was smart or not...like when I see them and decide how the colors and printing look.
We're all slow here Chris, (especially me) with a few exceptions😉
She'll be ready for her maiden voyage in no time 👍
