Primer is on... Got a few spots to work on before I can move to preshading... the canopy fit needs some work, and there are a couple areas I found that need more sanding and smoothing.

Thanks Holger, Spanjaard, David, Jeff, and Dale!!!! I got the two greens down now, hope to get the gray done tonight too. I'm in the painting ZONE right now haha.

Looks really great so far.
I really have to try out the black basing technique as soon as possible!

It's amazing when you started it and how good your work is. It looks great, and I have always wanted to see a G in these colours. All the kit's I've seen so far of the G where either in SEA or in Hill Gray.
Waiting for the decals!

Michael Phillips
Thanks Dale, Patrick, Michael, Burkhard, Sören, James, and Maciej!

I got the gloss coat on last night and will put some decals on tonight. Maybe the main ones tonight then the stencils tomorrow and Friday. Hope to have this one wrapped up by the end of the weekend. Still got a lot to do... Decals, weathering, metalwork, weapons, flat coat, display stand...

Looking great as usual mate! Have you used Gunze all over for the EURO I?
25 January 2017, 22:47

Ooo damn almost missed this one..
26 January 2017, 00:19
Gary Brantley
Very nice painting technique Michael. 🙂 It will inspire me when I build my Phantom. 👍
26 January 2017, 00:49
Michael Phillips
Thanks Urban, Augie, and Gary! Got the main decals on tonight. Stencils will be tomorrow and Friday probably. The PN decals really gave me some trouble, but the rest were great!

Urban, the dark and light green are both Gunze, but the gray is Tamiya. I went with the Tamiya xf-24 because I thought the Gunze gray was a little too dark from when I did this scheme on my A-10 awhile back. The red is Gunze insignia red and the black is Tamiya rubber black.

comes out fantastic!

Michael, you keep me impressed with your building pace and quality of models you produce. This is a sweet looking Rhino, nice to see a WW in the green rather than grey. Very inspiring.

Thanks mate! Wonderful colours to use!

Michael Phillips
Thanks Christian, Erik, Ed, Bryn, and Urban! This one is actually taking me a bit longer than normal, tomorrow will be three weeks, which is my goal, but I still have a lot to do.

Anyway, put more decals and stencils on tonight. I will say, those black line decals going down the top sides of center fuselage were probably the most frustrating decals I have ever applied. Took me forever just to get to look almost decent, and many times I had them so twisted I almost gave up. But I got them on, however they are not perfectly straight. Oh well, it was the best I could do, and glad I was able to save them!

Thanks Jeff, Ed, and Adam!

Got the wash on the topside this morning, but looking at the pics it looks a little heavy. Doesn't look so bad in person... I think I will go back in and tone it down a bit.
28 January 2017, 18:23
Christian Bruer
according to the photos it looks ok, but you have the best live view and will make the best out of it. Very well done so far 👍

I think she looks just fine, I like the highlighting of the panel lines. Makes her look used. 👍

Murad ÖZER
Michael i've been following this build since the beginning with great interest because the camo is my fav when it comes to beasts, and it turned out to be a killer! if the loadout will be proper i'll be drooling over this one, it's that nice on me eyes 🙂
29 January 2017, 02:18
Michael Phillips
Thanks Christian, Mats, Markus, Maciej, Ed, Robert, Christian, Scott, Michael, and Murad!

I did dial back the wash slightly, but I will go back in and strategically add some wear using Tamiya Smoke. The colors really turned out nice, especially after the wash darkened the gray up in particular. I was a little worried that the XF-24 was actually a bit TOO light. But I am pleased now with how the colors look.

Murad, thanks so much for the kind words! I hope the loadout meets your expectations, it is not going to be particularly exotic though... Actually, I should have some pics of the weapons tonight as that is what I am working on right now!
29 January 2017, 03:02
Glenn
Looks Phantastic!!
29 January 2017, 06:37
Dale Marston
What load out are you doing Michael?
29 January 2017, 11:03
Michael Phillips
Thanks Glenn!

Got the matte coat on and removed the canopy masking... Where the windscreen meets the fuselage there are some issues, I will have to work on that with a brush and some paint to get that looking better.

Dale and Maciej, as you can see in the pics I went with 3 Sparrows, 2 AGM-78s, an ALQ-119, and not pictured are the Centerline and wing fuel tanks.

Up next is the metalwork. Hoping to have this wrapped up by Wednesday!

Michael I am a fan of fully loaded birds. And we don't get to see a pair of Standard Anti Radiation Missiles. She will become a mean looking Rhino!
30 January 2017, 18:31
Christian Ristits
Really looks fantastic!
30 January 2017, 18:45
Ed Froix
How do you get those canopys so nice and clean, without damaging
?
30 January 2017, 18:53
Michael Phillips
Thanks Michael, Marko, Ed, Dale, Maciej, and Christian! I am very pleased with how she has turned out so far.

Ed, as for the canopy, probably the most important thing I do is dip the canopy in Future (Klear, Pledge Floor Care, may be called different things where you are from). This gives it a nice crystal clear protection. I use Tamiya tape and Tamiya tape for curves on my canopies, they both work fantastic! I don't like pre-cut masks, for some reason I have more trouble with them than making my own. When it comes time to remove the masking, I use a toothpick to help get the tape up. It wont damage the clear plastic.
Sometimes I get a little future build up or solvent under the masking, and the cool thing is all I have to do is take a toothpick and scrape most of it off, then a cotton swap with windex on it to get rid of the rest, and then just brush on some more future back on that area... then it is good as new!

Hope this helps...

So I finished up the metalwork tonight. I took pics of most of the process to document what I did. The first thing I did, after I masked LOL, was to spray Alcald Gloss Black Base. Then, I sprayed Alclad Airframe Aluminum over all areas to be metal. I then went in with Alclad Pale Burnt Metal over the panel lines in the heat shield area of the fuselage. Then I sprayed the Alclad Dark Aluminum on the center panels of the stabs. Next up was Alclad Burnt Iron, I sprayed that strategically to give the burnt affect, trying to fade it out as it got further away from the burner cans. I sprayed that on the burner cans, fuselage heat shielding, and undersides of the stabs. Lastly, I took some Tamiya Rubber Black ( I like using this for the really dark heat staining because it is so flat and sprays really nice, giving me much control over how much I put down) and evened things out and gave the darkest burnt areas a little more depth.

I am pleased with how it turned out, I hope you like and it can help someone paint theirs someday!

Looks great Michael. Lets see plenty of good close ups of it now! I like the "flame grilled" metal behind the afterburners! 🙂

Nice work. You do the primer in black then grey, instead of grey and then black... nic'è results. Waiting for final model... beautiful

One thing I noticed now Michael. Your choice of the tail code. Most people choose WW or SP. Your choice of PN (stationed at Clark AFB in Philippines) is a nice touch. The engine area is superb ofcourse. Thank you for the info.

Thanks Glenn, Murad, Ed, Spanjaard, Erik, James, Urban, Ice, James, Christian, Ivan, and Maciej!

Maciej, I agree I have not seen many of the Clark F-4e or F-4Gs done. My wife is from the Philippines, so that was an added reason to do these markings.

I am almost done with this project. Most likely will finish tonight and will post pics of the finished product!
