Today I begun building this crazy project that will probably keep me occupied for a while. Three landing ships with complement and about 40 vehicles with crew disembarking from them on the beaches of Normandy. I started on the LST with the removal of several structures that will be replaced by the daunting Infini aftermarket set.

Good luck!

Thanks, Villiers! I painted the lower deck of the LST. Walls are Tamiya white, deck is Lifecolor Deck Blue 20b.

All this detail in scale 1/350! I can only sit back and admire your quality of work.

Thanks! Just added some more Infini detail, the large winch for the dredge anchor has more than 10 turned brass elements. Luckily they have provided a recognition figure for these pieces, because on the pictures they can be hard to distinguish from each other, all being provided together in ziplocks.

The fo'csle is being built up and another Swiss watch is emptied on the decks.

The venting pipes are a conspicuous addition to the deck. If you're up to it you can add 12 grab handles to each of them (still debating on it). The aft gets the same pile of gun tubs upon platforms.

That is one ambitious project with all that photoetch 👍 Definetly keeping an eye on it!

Tom, David and Simon, welcome aboard. Today an update about the davits system on the LCT. I decided after an investigation on Navsource that I want to build LST-52, you find some pictures of it in the album. This ship, was in Normandy and also at the Operation Crossroads nuclear test, though I can't tell in these pictures which of the 4 LST's is starring. You get a hint with the proximity of Nagato, the large ship in front of the explosion. The changes I made on the forecastle were necessary to match the Normandy pictures. Looking forward to paint that hull camo.

The Carley floats are prepared now, I eventually made 8. Then, the prop guards were set on both sides. The drag anchor is left off, this should be lowered during a landing. The LCT kits are now assembled and all joints are filled with CA and sanded.

Coming along nicely. A gigantic undertaking!

Thanks, Villiers. In this update, I added some improvements of my own to the AFV upgrade set. The gun tubs are better if remade from metal strip, the drilling templates are best used as permanent appliqué-parts. The stern is full of tiny particles and the bow is missing a recess for one of the doors. I still want to detail the winch.

The LCT's are nearing completion, after I decpnstructed them partially to install the bridge ladder. I added the anchor platform from some 1/700 fine PE gauze and I changed the yardarms on the mast. The munition locker platforms on the gun tubs are a horror to assemble.

The AFV vehicle set is now assembled. I decided to improve on the Sherman tracks. These had the space around the wheels not hollowed out, an easy task with a drill and a microsaw. The Infini double Bofors guns (x2) took a bit longer to make, needing some reference to identify some small PE parts.

Whooow taking a seat, seems to bee a BIG project 👍

Welcome Dietmar, it is still expanding. Now 5 single Bofors and 12 Oerlikons are assembled. But I had removed 2 turrets, so now I have 2 Bofors in reserve. I would have liked 4 extra 20mm's, but ther are only provisions for 2 so now only one LCT would be armed.

The North Star figurines are prepared for painting and I planned a color scheme for Lifecolor paint. It will have overall Pale Grey with Navy Blue insignia on the bow. Deck will be Deck Blue.

This is a gigantic undertaking.

Thanks for the acclaim. Now the resin vehilces are prepared. This is for the most part very simple due to the very fine casting channel. But some vehiles had some bubbles or flash, and the Dragon Wagons had their trailers cast with a closed axle module. This can be drilled open with some care. A few barrels had to be made from wire and I'm also scratching .50 guns for the tanks and the Dragons.
10 February 2022, 19:16
Steven Van Dyck
I painted the hull with Lifecolor Pale Grey, the decks with Deck Blue and the vehicles with Tamiya and Gunze colors over Olive Drab. Soldiers are Khaki drab and light blue.
18 February 2022, 00:55
Steven Van Dyck
The 4 missing guns are replaced by Aber barrels, but lacking enough Infini parts leads to the use of the AFV photo etch that is a bit overscale and simplified. On the vehicles the tire rubber and canvas is painted.
23 February 2022, 23:59
Steven Van Dyck
The vehicles have got their decals, that were ordered from L'Arsenal. Also, some painting is done like the seats and the tank numbers. Now it will be saled with Pledge.

It took me a while to gather the courage for the next step, but the masking of the decks is done now. Tomorrow I can start the painting.

The painting and shadowing of the upside of the LST was done yesterday. The tape can now be removed and it has worked well.

An epic project coming along nicely.

The bow of the LST is painted like number 52 in Normandy. One LCT was also painted in a disruptive camo.
8 June 2023, 21:29
Steven Van Dyck
The LCT's got their railing and all ships got also the AA guns and Carley floats. I closed down the LST with the DUKW inside of it, but don't search for that in the pictures.
26 June 2023, 18:52
Steven Van Dyck
The LST now got its railing. It had to be slightly modified to fit between the new Carley float positions. But this was no problem, because Infini provides multiple options to provide railing near removed davits.

Mr James
The level of detail achieved on this scale is amazing. Very impressive work indeed.
2 July 2023, 08:14
Steven Van Dyck
Thanks, Mr. James. I now added the boot toppings and some soot on the hull of the LST. The deck was stained a bit. Some railing will need repair.
4 July 2023, 23:03
Steven Van Dyck
On the LST, the 6 LCVP's are installed with the PE chain set. The LCT's got their hull painted red and their lifebuoys added. The blue one got the PE rudder and screw, it will be beached.

An epic project. Very nice progress.

Thanks, Villiers. Now the dio base is built up with plaster and AK terrain products Atlantic Water, Beach Sand and Water Foam.
9 August 2023, 23:50
Steven Van Dyck
A black paper board is added to the dio, where now Vallejo Field Grey was added to the Atlantic Blue. The sides I coated with the darker Pacific Blue. The figures are now being painted.
21 August 2023, 23:01
Steven Van Dyck
More figures are ready now. The Black Cat soldiers all have the right details.
22 August 2023, 23:13
Steven Van Dyck
Rigging is done with Van der Rosten thread. For the weathering is used rust for tracks from Mig and a weathering set for ships.
31 August 2023, 23:02
Steven Van Dyck
The trucks are filled with the scrap material and some of L'Arsenal's crates, bags and barrels. Then all vehicles are glued on to the diorama.
2 September 2023, 00:50
Dietmar Bogatzki
absolut awesome, no words 👍 👍 👍
2 September 2023, 07:09
Steven Van Dyck
Thanks, Dietmar. After all the figures were applied, some pigments have been added to the sand part and then matt coat was sprayed over the diorama. A change was done to the front LCT, it should have been offloaded a wile ago at that moment. I consider it finished now, I'll bring it to Waregem next week.

Thanks, guys! Operation Overlord has won a bronze medal at Plastic & Steel 2023. Also you might soon recognize some parts of the dio on the L'Arsénal web store, they wanted to illustrate their unpainted products with it and made a small photoshoot.
