That's how accidents happen!

LOL! Indeed 😉 hahaha

So far the lower hull is completed and I have started working on the upper hull. The upper hull, all wheels, gun mantlet and barrel assembly are dry-fitted, not glued yet.

I wonder how Tammy's Mid compares to this one that is slightly newer...
9 July 2014, 19:52
John Van Kooten
From what I have heard from fellow modelers who have built it, the Tamiya Hetzer has better detail. The academy kit has softer detail in certain areas but I very much doubt if the difference will actually be noticable once the kit is finished.

Acki
I´m in. This one is also in my stash. Another chance for me to look and learn. 👍

Your welcome john😉
I might even add an mg like on the academy limited edition hetzer lol
9 July 2014, 20:02
John Van Kooten
Thanks Acki! 👍 👍 I hope I don't disappoint!😉
Great kit! I'm loving it already! Everything just... works! 👍
9 July 2014, 20:02
Hunter Cummins
Whats soft on the detail?
Looks almost like tye cyberhobby mid version??
9 July 2014, 20:04
John Van Kooten
From what I have heard it is somewhat softer in detail overall, compared to the Tamiya kit. But it is strictly hear-say. I don't have the Tamiya kit, so I can't really compare the two. But general consensus is that Tamiya kit is better.

But quite frankly, I don't care what people say 😄 I really like this Academy kit!! To me, it looks GREAT! 🙂

That's what's important mate!
9 July 2014, 21:40
Hunter Cummins
Amen to that lol

Hey John you've started another kit !!

9 July 2014, 22:57
John Van Kooten
Hahaha! Indeed I have and yes I should!! 😄
And I have Hunter to thank for that 🙂 He's steering me in the right direction 😛

@Urban: absolutely! 🙂

mhhh... I´m glad I´m home this weekend.... I can´t take it far longer, I have to take a look in that box now.... just checking if everything is still sealed and on the sprues, of course😉
lookig good John....

Es-haq Khosravi
Well done!
10 July 2014, 21:09
John Van Kooten
@Es-haq: thanks mate! 🙂

@Fabian: Absolutely, you should check the box. Just to check if nothing has gone missing. Of course! I totally understand! 😄 😛 so... when will you start building this one as well then? 😄 😄

I like your workplace. Have you a whole picture of it? I'm just going to rebuild my workplace and seeking Inspiration. 🙂 Thx
11 July 2014, 06:54
John Van Kooten
Thanks John! 👍 🙂 I have an album dedicated to my modeling room: Modeling/Hobby room and (part of) the Stash | Album by JohnVK

Although I must say that the room is in a constant state of being improved at the moment 😉 So the setup in the images has already changed a bit.
11 July 2014, 07:16

...I´ll start not too soon I guess, or rather hope😉 Have to clear a "few" other build off first.... probably after my holidays...
11 July 2014, 10:11
Jonns Pfeiffenberger
thanks John! I have a lot of space but no proper storage space, I'll build a few small shelves and/or drive to IKEA😉
11 July 2014, 11:35
Choppa Nutta
This is my work desk that I made for myself, 7.5 feet wide, 7.5 feet tall and 2.5 feet deep
(2.3m x 2.3m x 0.77m)

For main structure I used 4 sheets of 8' x 4' ply and 4 lengths of 4" x 2" for the uprights. 2 sheets of 18mm thick ply for the shelves and 2 sheets of 9mm thick for the sides and back board. The open fronted project drawers are 12mm thick 2' x 4' sheets.

Of course it looks very different empty of all the stuff on it now but it has made such a difference in getting organised, especially the project shelves below the desk on the right hand side, best thing I have built in terms of getting projects going again 🙂

Looks really cool your late Hetzer! Will you apply the disc scheme?
Can you already say something to the pe set? Does it work well?
11 July 2014, 12:35
Hunter Cummins
John,
im glad im steering you in the right direction 🙂lol choppa, I will save that and use it to make mine (alot biggrr though lol)
11 July 2014, 16:38
John Van Kooten
@John: Ikea has some surprisingly nice items for the hobbyist, so good chance you'll succeed in finding what you need there 👍 if not furniture then at least very cheap and nice looking photo frames one could use as a diorama base 🙂

@Choppa: very nice!! 👍

@Holger: thanks mate! 🙂 I will probably not use the disc scheme but it will be a tricolor hard edged scheme. As this build was not really planned I haven't given it much thought yet though, so I could still change my mind about it😉
I have not used any of the PE yet but it does look really good and nicely detailed. Certainly worth the purchase 👍

@Hunter: haha! Yeah, you did steer me in the right direction😉 Thanks mate! 🙂
12 July 2014, 00:55
John Van Kooten
@Fabian: lol!😉 yeah, probably best not to get side tracked by another build if there are already a few waiting to get some attention 🙂
12 July 2014, 00:56
Choppa Nutta
the nice thing about making your own work station is that you really can make the most of the space that have available with a bespoke fitting work station 🙂

Anyhow...... Hows your tank John, nearly finished yet ? get on with it !! 😄
12 July 2014, 01:08
John Van Kooten
Tssk tssk 😉 haha!

I'm actually going to take a nap! It's 3:35 in the morning 😛

More fun later today when I will continue working on the kits which I currently have in projects 🙂
12 July 2014, 01:35
Choppa Nutta
but of course good sir, couldn't resist a tease though 😄
12 July 2014, 01:46
Hunter Cummins
Lol john,
what would you do without me eh? Lol 😉 I have never taken a nap lol(never since I was 7 lol)
12 July 2014, 02:27
John Van Kooten
@Choppa: Haha! 😛 keeps me on my toes, so it's all good 😉
@Hunter: indeed! 😉 And I say nap but I actually mean just getting some sleep in general at all 😄 lol

Anyway! Nap time is over! Back to "business" 👍

Darren Hazes
Where did you buy that one
1 September 2014, 14:22
John Van Kooten
I think I picked it up in a local shop but it has been a long time since I bought it, so I'm not 100% sure.

However, this kit is readily available in pretty much any (web)shop. It's not a special kit in any way and reasonably priced. Yet still a very nice kit though! 🙂 if you already have a preferred reseller, ask them. I'm sure they can get it for you.

Personally, I have had (very) good dealings with the guys at modelbouwverf.nl. They can most definitely order it for you: modelbouwverf.nl/ind..lang=nl#.VATWRuZy_kc

Darren Hazes
Wel i saw that one in overloon during a fair right before summer vaction for north holland this year.
1 September 2014, 20:40
John Van Kooten
Ah great! 🙂 Was that perhaps on June 15th? Because that was the annual military modeling fair and meeting of my club at Overloon (the TWENOT) 🙂

I can defnitely recommend getting this kit! It's one of the best Hetzer kits currently available and a real joy to build 👍
1 September 2014, 21:32
Darren Hazes
Yup i was there i also bought a hetzer kit over there
1 September 2014, 21:56
John Van Kooten
Nice! 👍 Hope you liked the fair and the museum 🙂

We'll be looking forward to your own postings of your Hetzer once you start building it! 👍 🙂

Luis Ferrer
Love the hetzer .
2 September 2014, 00:53
John Van Kooten
Me too! 🙂

I like to call it "Little Danger" which can be interpreted in two ways😉 and which I think describes this tank best😉 one may think, because of its size, it's not that dangerous. But this little thing packed a punch!
2 September 2014, 08:39
Mike Kryza
Hi John - look at my "Hetzer". I've built that one last year. It's the Academy ones too. You'll find some "step by step" pics. Jagdpanzer 38(t) "Hetzer" (late) | Album by tigermike
One hint - Close the track behind the sideskirts. In this way it's easier correcting the lenght of the tracks.

Patrik Spett
Hi John. I was in Amsterdam last year, have friends there. Do you know of any hobby store in that city? I will follow your Hetzer project as it looks intrestig with the extra PE 🙂
2 September 2014, 16:58
Patrik Spett
Oh, the metal barrel came with the kit or is it AM?
2 September 2014, 16:59
John Van Kooten
@Mike: thanks for the tip! 🙂 and I know your Hetzer build! It's one of the prime examples I'm using for my own build 😄 👍

@Patrik: Aaah, you have visited our great little country! Cool! 👍 I'm not that familiar with Amsterdam, to be honest. But there is one shop there that I have dealt with. It's Muco Modelbouw (muco-modelbouw.nl). Really friendly and helpful guys! Just one tip: don't fully trust the stock indication on their website 😉 it is off sometimes. But just drop them an email or call them and they will run up the attic to check if it's in stock or not 😄 Like I said: they're really friendly and helpful! 👍

The metal barrel is included in the Def.Model PE set. But truthfully... a metal barrel really isn't required. The single piece plastic barrels included in the kit are pretty good as well. I just used the metal one because it was included. It's not even why I bought the PE set either 🙂

John Van Kooten
This kit has been on hold for a while, so I dusted it off and started working on it again 🙂

Continued building the upper and lower hull, glued everything together and added some PE (and some more PE will follow). I have also base coated the wheels: coat of primer first, followed by three different colors for the wheels. The same colors will also be used for the camouflage pattern.

Pretty good!

Thanks Acki 👍 🙂

Looking good. Nice to know that Academy also makes good quality/price Kits. Will be looking forward to new pictures.

Looking good so far. I really like the latest Academy kits.
15 September 2015, 16:34
Rui S
They are getting better, hum? and in the boxart also, hehe.
15 September 2015, 16:38
John Van Kooten
Thanks HK & Rui 👍

I like Academy kits as well. They go together without too much hassle and look great even when they are built straight out of the box 👍
15 September 2015, 22:34
John Van Kooten
Added a few images of today's progress ( image #13 - #18 ). Didn't have a lot of time so I was only able to add some PE and a few pieces of plastic parts. But progress nonetheless 😄

I still don't like PE. To me it's nothing more than a "necessary" evil. Those tool clasps are horrific!! I don't think I'll be able to get them done the way they should be. Or maybe even not at all... They are made up of some reeeelly tiny parts... and parts of the clasp handle broke on first contact because they are also very fragile. So yeah... not sure if I want to continue working on those 🤔
15 September 2015, 22:45
Hunter Cummins
Looks beautiful john! And I used the same colors on mine (the dark yellow and green for the octopus camo I did, in the dragon one you helped me with). And I personally think the color is to sandy toned for dunklgelb, but still looks great!!
15 September 2015, 23:28
John Van Kooten
@James: Thanks James! 👍 Even if you build it without PE, I know it will look beautiful 🙂 Some smaller parts might need a little TLC but nothing that can't be handled.
I'm not sure at this point if I will be using the masks that were provided with the kit. I'm still considering a couple of paint jobs. But you are right, the parts of the masks are only numbered in the instructions but once you take them off and add them to the model, it's hard to track what is what.

Very much looking forward to your version 👍 Hetzers are great! 😄

@Hunter: Thanks Hunter! 🙂

The light sandy color is A.MIG-012 RAL 7028 DUNKELGELB AUS '44 DG III. It is the same base color I used on the Jagdpanzer IV A-0 I'm working on. You can see the difference in color tone in image #23 of that album ( Dragon 9131 - Jagdpanzer IV A-0 | Album by JohnVK (1:35) )
It will get darker and more "Dunkelgelb toned" with subsequent weathering layers. I always start with very light base colors for Dunkelgelb and work towards a darker tone gradually 🙂 It's much easier to make things darker than it is to make them lighter 😉
16 September 2015, 06:52
Hunter Cummins
Ahhhh i see😉. I do to, but I like it to be very yellow (probably because I follow adams way so much like we talked aboyt lol). But you are very right, that's why I use color modulation 🙂
16 September 2015, 20:13
John Van Kooten
Yeah exactly. It's just a personally preferred way of doing things we all have 🙂
Adam Wilder is definitely a master of his trade. Only good things come from him 😄
16 September 2015, 20:47
Hunter Cummins
I have to totally agree!!! 😄. (Oh and by the way, I'm trying to get your magazines done, trying yo take the pictures so they are readable, and clear, like if you had the accrual magazine)
17 September 2015, 19:52
John Van Kooten
Anyone hating on Adam is just plain jealous 😉 😛

Looking forward to the mags. But there's no rush, take your time! 🙂 Thanks buddy!! 👍 👍
18 September 2015, 05:54
Hunter Cummins
I have to agree!! 😉 😛.

Ok sounds great!! And no problem! 👍 👍
18 September 2015, 19:21

Album info

Thanks to Hunter I was forced to start this project 😉 😄

I was going to check the gun / barrel / mantlet assembly, to see if any gaps were present. Hunter's Dragon Hetzer kit did have a big issue with the mantlet. And before I knew it, I had the entire gun assembly and lower hull with suspension completed 😛

The Academy 13230 - Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer "Late Version" is a very nice kit overall. I will be building this one 95% OOB using only a small amount of PE in some key areas.

However, I am going to use Friul tracks because the link and length tracks included in this kit are not my cup of tea.
