Hey Kerry, nice collection of models, some real stunners in there. The Ikea cabinet is almost identical to the one I bought late last year from Fantastic Furniture, they dropped the price on them by $40Au so there the same price as the Ikea version, a cool $100Au how can you go past that. The only difference is where the Ikea one has the 4 rods 1 in every corner, the Fantastic Furniture one has funny shaped brackets holding it all in place, but she is solid has a rock.

I plan on adding another 3 glass shelves in later on down the track, as there is plenty of height between each shelf, therefore doubling the display area. The only problem is that the few WWII Heavies that I have in 1/48 don't stand a chance of fitting in. I'll just make cabinets for those models as I need them.

Oh I just had a thought... It would be a good cabinet for my 1/35 Schnellboot, type S-100. Just have to buy a coffee table or other suitable table, don't use the shelving, and use the cabinet laying on it's side. That would work for large scale ships as well, buy a second piece of glass, use that as a shelf and you could maybe even get a second ship in there.🤔;)

Michael. Happy New year buddy. 🙂
I am glad you mentioned the shelf numbers Mike, or the lack of them in the IKEA units, that I am for the next one, I will be seeing a mate of mine who is a boiler maker and he can add some more support rods and I can get some glass shelving to add as well, giving me and extra three levels, and with the current ones, I can dismantle them in sequence and have the extra shelving added too. 👍
And with the 1/48 stuff, it all should look more like I need.
Thanks for the nice words on what I have in my vertical boxes mate. 🙂
These cases are not all that sturdy and wobble a touch when opened, but with some larger rest pads on the new support rods, it 'should' eliminate to a degree, that 'jelly' feel. hahahaha 🙂
How many did you end up buying Michael.?
I am hoping that IKEA will be making a larger size unit, big enough to take the 1/32 stuff.
I live in hope.👍
Cheers and good to see you Mike. 👍 🙂

Happy New Year to you to my friend. I only ended up getting 1 as Tammy doesn't really like having stuff like glass cabinets sitting around not being used in case we have to move, it's just that little bit more stuff you have to lug. So I buy them as I need them. The Fantastic Furniture one doesn't wobble, I'd say because it's all held together with brackets and bolts, plus the pads that the bottom shelf sits on are a pretty good size. Fantastic Furniture do one that is double the length but it works out considerably cheaper to buy the single cabinets, as what I build isn't usually long to warrant the bigger cabinet.🙂

I have 3. But the shelf spacing could be closer. Also would be better if around 400 to 500mm wide. However they are cheap.

The price is good. The size...it would do OK for some of my stuff. But the larger 1/48s and 1/32 stuff needs something larger. I need full blown display cases. Larger ones.

I am looking at what Michael has talked about from Fantastic Furniture, and the possibility of making a long one for my German railway gun. !

Hi Kerry,
I've one of this and I was lucky because I mounted it alone and I was afraid of breaking the all thing together but in the end it was Ok.
My is also a bit 'jelly'. and the more you tight the bigger the glass warp.
I think, this things will never work laying on the side for long before the glass starting to warp or break.
They also have a problem, The door isn't dust proof, there is a big gap on either side.
I've bought a PVC profile from W.C. glass showers to seal up that gap.
I'm also looking a way to had some more shelf space. Possible, but without soldering, it's not going to be easy. But being 38cm the original space between the shelf's, with another in the middle will be a bit tight. 🙁
Nice models in there 👍

yes, i have one of those for more than 10 years.... not dust proof as Rui said (good idea to seal the door, i may try that), and certainly a pity that there is no chance of adding more shelves or to change the hight. but everything considered, it is a good and not expensive option.

Rui S
Yes, I agree and I've to buy another one 🙂

Hi everybody. Good to see you all. 🙂
I have worked out a way of adding more levels.
Just before assembly, a mate of mine who does specialist welding and heavy gauge wire work can add some extra rods in between the ones all ready there and I end up with 8 levels. Just enough without getting too heavy.
Dust will get in no matter how well you seal them up. but that's ok, as it gives me something to do when I am in between models. 🙂
I can prevent the wobbles of the shelves by adding a spacer to brace the frame and restrict any movement when opening the door.
Having extra levels I can thin out what I have to bikes, cars, armour and what ever aircraft I have.

I will post some images of the new and improved IKEA multi level display case as it comes on line. 🙂

Great item, It is possible to assemble it alone with great care, organisation... but tricky and risky.
A must buy especially for our neighbouring countries : Ikea has a curious and hardly to understand price policy : Price (Euro) in France : 75, Germany 59, Belgium 49,99, Spain 49.99...).

I have a few of these ikea cabinets and have included acrylic display stands that come in various sizes and will make the most out of the shelf by elevating the model for viewing but also can fit over other models without over crowding the shelf.

I will add a photo and refer it to this thread

I have the exact same display case. Just wish it had a couple more shelves. Being as I mostly model in 1/72, lots of room between the shelves....

Gordon. What I am going to do is buy my fourth case, but, before assembly, I will have the frames modified so that I have double the shelves, buy the glass to suite, then transfer the contents of one or possibly two into the modified new one then, disassemble the others and have them modified too.
That way, I have doubled my capacity and thin all the models out so that more of them can be seen instead of all being jammed in tight. 🙂 👍

Kinda glad I spent a few idle moments cruising your wall while I should have been working Kerry. Bringing this up again has certainly been of benefit to both IKEA worldwide and folks thinking of better displaying their completed builds.

Cheers Peter. I was very disappointed with the IKEA case, in the sense of it not having more shelves, but after working out the possibility of adding some more, I committed the last one to the change and the retro fitting of the others I already have. BUT, with 'half' shelves, giving me room to reach in without impacting on the shelf above, and it also lets you see more of what is in the case without having to 'bend down' to see them all.

Three tall display cases at $99,00 each is a great deal and just the size I need for my 1/48 and 1/24 kits.
