Following!
So if this is going to be a kind of what if, you'll need the small elevators. Will the radome be black as in the early F-16s?
26 August 2018, 23:05
Patrick Hagelstein
Vreemde vogel! Ik ben benieuwd! 🙂 Wel gaaf dat je dit stukje historie van tussen Le Bourget en de daadwerkelijke afleveringen als uitgangspunt neemt.
26 August 2018, 23:07
Erik Leijdens
Yes Maciej, a what if but with a bit of reality to it. I will indeed use small stabs, antennas on the proper places and the radome will be black.

Nice one! This booklet is on my wishlist too.....count me in!

In 1977 Revell also opted for this scheme; [img1]

Ik kijk mee, I will follow this one

Jos Jansen
Interesting Erik...I'm in, looking forward to see the result. I heard about but never saw examples of this camouflage scheme..!
27 August 2018, 16:48
Patrick Hagelstein
Nice start! May I note that until the MLU update the stores display (the left instrument panel screen) had orange backlighting.
29 August 2018, 20:07
Erik Leijdens
Welcome Jan and Jos!
Added some pictures with captions which have to be made to this kit to backdate it from a block 15 to a block 10 F-16A.
29 August 2018, 20:09
Erik Leijdens
@Patrick, ok will change that! Thanks 👍
29 August 2018, 21:28
Patrick Hagelstein
You're welcome!
30 August 2018, 01:08
Patrick Hagelstein
In the picture you see some kind of lines in that screen. When operational every line would show orange numbers and letters kinda like a Texas Instruments graphical calculator used in schools.
30 August 2018, 01:09
Erik Leijdens
I know what you mean Patrick, although I'm used to work with a Casio graphic calculator 😄.
30 August 2018, 09:08

off topic: FX82b to the rescue!

😄 😄 😄
30 August 2018, 15:59
Erik Leijdens
Wim, I'm using the FX82MS nowadays😎
30 August 2018, 20:02
Martin Oostrom
The only blocks I know of, are the wooden kind I used to play with as a kid.
If this is half as good as the NF-5, this should be very interesting 👍
30 August 2018, 21:26
Erik Leijdens
Thanks Martin! Will do my best mate! Luckily the F-16 has a special place in my heart so it doesn't lack enthusiasm. Normally I don't do what-ifs but this time I'll make a exception.
30 August 2018, 22:04
Patrick Hagelstein
Well, it's not what-iff. You're just building a 3D version of a 2D document now somewhere stored in a KLu archive.
30 August 2018, 23:15
Maciej Bellos
Patrick, that's a good one!
31 August 2018, 09:58
Erik Leijdens
Smart thinking Patrick 🙂

Used Hataka(laquer) for the first time. Great paint to work with

Very impressive Erik! Will watch this till the end!
19 September 2018, 15:29
Erik Leijdens
Thanks and Welcome Conrad! 🙂
19 September 2018, 16:02
Jos Jansen
Erik, what brand of varnish do you use? By the way, awesome job so far...!
19 September 2018, 18:05
Maciej Bellos
Looks great!
19 September 2018, 18:09
Erik Leijdens
@Jos, I'm using 3 types of varnish; Xtracolor Matt, Satin and Alclad matt(which is lesser Matt compared with Xtracolor. But what you see now is the just the finish of the Hataka paint. The nose needs to be grey, as are some other parts. After that the whole model will receive a coat of Future.
19 September 2018, 18:20
Patrick Hagelstein
Aren't the colors switched compared to the drawings???
19 September 2018, 21:32
Erik Leijdens
Sharp eye Patrick! They are, but the drawings are wrong. Look a picture 4, you can see the RAL numbers. Dutch decal switched them accidentally..
19 September 2018, 21:50
Patrick Hagelstein
Check! I didn't look closely at the RAL numbers. 🙂
20 September 2018, 07:24
Martin Oostrom
Or the RAL numbers are switched....... 😉
20 September 2018, 07:45
Patrick Hagelstein
😄
21 September 2018, 13:00
Erik Leijdens
Paintjob done, added a coat of Future. Decaltime!
21 September 2018, 20:29
Jos Jansen
Where can I buy Future or Pledge...the floor finish clear one?
22 September 2018, 06:28
Martin Oostrom
Amazon has it. Doesn't ship to NL though. They do ship to Germany, so if you live close to the border or have a friend there, it can be yours. I think it was €15 the bottle. Cheaper than most other varnishes….
22 September 2018, 06:53
Jos Jansen
@Martin, thx 👍
22 September 2018, 07:59

22 September 2018, 14:49
Jos Jansen
@Wim...👍
22 September 2018, 14:57
Martien Lourens
Wel een heel speciaal kleuren jasje Erik. Is een keer wat anders. Ziet er weer veel belovend uit.
22 September 2018, 19:09
Michael Moerkens
And now for something completely different,... striking scheme Erik.
This also brings back recolections of handing over my pocket money many moons ago, still at primary school, for the Revell 1/72 version.
24 September 2018, 21:01
Patrick Hagelstein
Which was a very good kit at that time! The crew figures included in that kit can still hold up today and the Block 15 extra parts were very finely ingraved.
25 September 2018, 02:08
Erik Leijdens
Thanks mates 👍. Yes Patrick, the old Revell kit, I remember building the red/white/blue FSD F-16 together with my dad when I was a kid 🙂 With the engine on a dolly, great memories. Still have that model in my possession!
27 September 2018, 21:05
Spanjaard
nice job so far Erik
29 September 2018, 21:13
Maciej Bellos
It looks colourful! I like it!
30 September 2018, 20:35
Erik Leijdens
It is Maciej! But I will spray a filter over the decals to make them less bright.
30 September 2018, 20:43
Patrick Hagelstein
OK but they don't distract because of their brightness. It is off course a brand new plane. Speaking of that, wouldn't the radome be black like the early birds in the 80's?
30 September 2018, 20:55
ice
They should have choosen this scheme. It looks great. Thank you for choosing it for a model. Nice job so far.
30 September 2018, 21:15
Erik Leijdens
Thanks Ice🙂
@Patrick, only the first 18 Dutch F-16 were delivered with a black radome, they all were block 1 machines. My F-16, J-244, was delivered in '81 and was a block 10 aircraft which all were delivered with the grey radome. Although this is a what-if build I want it to be alternate historical correct 😄
1 October 2018, 06:11
Patrick Hagelstein
😄 Good one! 👍
1 October 2018, 15:04
Tim Heimer
Looking good!
1 October 2018, 15:36
Jos Jansen
It is a pity that this viper crashed in the North Sea in 1986, otherwise you could have put his current conversion next to this edition. That was a exceptional combination, nevertheless you are working on a unique piece of history that could have become reality! I am very curious about your end result...👍
1 October 2018, 19:28
Thomas Bischoff
terrific paint job again! Pity this paint scheme didn't made it into the sky's
2 October 2018, 06:34
Erik Leijdens
Thanks mates! The camouflage will get it's true beauty after the subtle pinwash and matt coat, now it's looking very toy-like..
@Jos, I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you mean with "his current conversion". I think you mean, in the case it didn't crashed, the MLU conversion?
2 October 2018, 08:46
Jos Jansen
Yes that's what I mean...sorry for the confusion.
3 October 2018, 15:45
Kees Kleijwegt
Great job as usual Erik! 👍👍
Very cool Viper
3 October 2018, 16:43
Erik Leijdens
Ok clear Jos! To be honest, aestheticly, I don't like the F-16 as it is nowadays. Humps, bumps, stiffners, "bird slicers" , hard points on the inlet, CFT's..etc. To me the original A/C and B/D models are the most beautiful Vipers. Am I getting old...? 😄
3 October 2018, 20:51
Jos Jansen
No, I understand exactly what you mean. I am currently working on a Rafale M with lots of electronics, sensors ... humps and bumps as you call it. Give me the old birds of the sixties and seventies, no-nonsense jets with beautiful lines. For example the Phantom, a magnificent machine ... timeless! Keep up with your current project Erik, you are inspiring to me. 👍
3 October 2018, 21:39
Erik Leijdens
Goddamn silvering! Hope I can still fix that!
5 October 2018, 07:30
Wim van der Luijt
I hope so too....otherwise it's a very clean build...fingers crossed!
5 October 2018, 07:51
Günther Debiscop
I have the same kind of project that I will start one of the following months/years 🙂

Belgian Air Force F-16 "FX-" | Project by gdebiscop (1:48)

Initially, Belgium wanted to paint their Vipers in the SEA scheme, but the US DoD didn't approve it, and the rest is history as they say it.
5 October 2018, 09:02
Günther Debiscop
Did you varnish it before applying the decals? Mostly this would have solved the silvering.
5 October 2018, 09:10
Murad ÖZER
Erik i didn't notice the silvering until you mentioned it, honestly the the build and paint are lovely. hopefully the decals won't drive you mad, hang in there. 🙂
5 October 2018, 09:24
Patrick Hagelstein
Yep, especially the 'Were di' wolves and ejection instructions around the cockpit. 🙁 Could you puncture them and have some Micro Sol seep in?
5 October 2018, 15:28
Erik Leijdens
Thanks for the nice words Murad 🙂 Good to see you like it!
@Patrick, on a Facebook modelling page another modeller gave that tip too and I tried it with a bit of succes. The silvering is less prominent now🙂. Luckily the rest of the stencils are from SyHart and have no silvering at all. Although the registration and 316 badge are from Dutch Decal too, they have no silvering..
5 October 2018, 18:35
Murad ÖZER
looking at the shots this seem not a case of air trapped under the decal silvering, but rather the carrier film not being translucent enough silvering. if they weren't clear coated over i'd suggest rubbing the problem decals over with white spirit (talens' #089 for instance works wonders) until the carrier is peeled off enough.
5 October 2018, 19:46
Erik Leijdens
Hmm okay thanks for the tip Murad. For now I have made some punctures and let some Sol seep in, which work a bit but it still is visible. Will leave it as it is now, this was just a kit for the sake of fun. Will finish it this week I think.
7 October 2018, 19:17
Bart Goesaert
Some glycerine van help too I think: ipmsstockholm.org/ma.._benshahar_bf110.htm ( as for some reason, it gives a bad gateway, and that would je a real pity or more correct PITA)

Spanjaard
Thanks Bart
I used this method once, in a plane that I painted Matt, so silvering was horrible. Nitrocellulose thinner certainly made it better, but it was very close to ruin the decals. USE CAREFULLY!!! I would suggest to try first in an old model. And before you do it in your latest model, try first on some piece of plastic, with some left over decals. Remember that it will have very different effects on different decals depending on thickned, age, exposure to sunlight, decal solutions etc..... This product IS STRONG.
8 October 2018, 09:31
Murad ÖZER
Ditto Spanjaard, our hobby lacquer thinners (tamiya yellow cap for ex)) are "watered" down hardware store nitro cellulose more or less. using straight up cellulose thinner will eat everything on it's path; decal, paint and plastic itself too (will either mar or create waves on the surface depending on it's strength) so be very very cautious and apply with a very small brush which is almost dry!
8 October 2018, 11:03
Erik Leijdens
Bart, Spanjaard and Murad. Thanks for all the info mates, will save that info for trying it once on a old model. It seems a bit to dangerous for unleashing it on the F-16 🙂
8 October 2018, 14:03
Wim van der Luijt
I've tried acetone mixed with IPA with good results as well, just try it out on an old model like you say
8 October 2018, 14:45
Erik Leijdens
So, done! Will make some decent pictures with my DSLR when I have some free time in the daytime.
9 October 2018, 19:26

Thanks mates! Uploaded some more pictures of the en result. Not my best model, but still happy with it.
12 October 2018, 14:13
Patrick Hagelstein
The concept alone makes this an outstanding model already. Than take the work and craftsmanship you put in! 'Not my best model' pffft.... It's beautiful!!!
12 October 2018, 15:34
Martin von Schreckenstein
that is a really nice viper. good job

Thanks mates!
@Patrick, sorry mate I didn't want to sound arrogant but for me as the builder I know a lot things which I have done better in the past on other models. At least, I think I did.. 😄
