Here are a few of the modifications that I have done so far. First; I have filed an opening in the fuselage spine for the rear window. Second; the kit cowling was smooth, the Finnish version had bumps around it. I used an Airfix Blenheim engine. The PM Cowl is on the left, the Airfix cowl in the center is un-touched, the finished one on the right required A lot of sanding. The propeller also required reshaping; the PM is on left, modified Airfix in center, stock on right. I used a Special Hobby roll over frame as a pattern, and scratch built a copy out of Evergreen styrene. The copy is light gray.

I bought this model a few years ago, before I knew about its issues. I am going to have to rework just about all of it.

Bit of work, but sounds like you have it all planned out. I have been looking for a Matchbox or PM kit to make a Danish version.

I know that there are few issues with Mpm and Special Hobby kits even so they are much better than Pm Model kit.If i remember right PM kit and Matchbox kits are from same moulds.

Gordon Sorensen, I believe the PM kit is based on the Dutch built version. When the Finns started license manufacturing the D XXI they changed some things.

Ville Siltanen, I got the special hobby and the MPM, kits after I got the PM model. I have been able to use parts of those models as a pattern to modify the PM kit. I got the PM model as a practice kit. If I wanted to practice filling, sanding, filing, modifying, and scratch building, this was the kit to get!

The D XXI that I am building will be FR-97 of 4/LLv 24, white 2. It was Lt J Sarvantos aircraft. It will be painted in the winter war, overall green scheme, with skis.

Have you made any progress with this kit?

No I haven't. I have since purchased kits of the same aircraft from MPM and Special Hobby. I have found out that generally, the better kit you start with the better finished model you end up with. Turning this very basic kit into a nice model would be a challenge that I would like to finish one day but I don't know when that will be.

I've got this same kit in stash, perhaps I'll also just let it be.
