Yesterday I begun the new project and I can already tell a funny story🙂 At first I noticed that the control sticks in the kit differ from the excellent pictures of the BW Teppichklopfer (Thx David). I quickly changed them and proudly showed the result to David. Just to learn that the kit parts were right for 71+47... A great false start!

Matching a drawing and a photo is tricky, the drawing will be 2d, while the object in the photo will be 3d and a distortion because of there being a 3d perspective view. Afaik, it probably explain the differences, or some of it I would think.

I made a 3d model of the Millennium Falcon on a computer based on nothing but photos once, so I know a thing or two about this. 🙂

If you look at the bottom of the heli kit model, there are two cavities for the landing skids, the cavities are obviously not centered in view with the camera the way you took the photo, and thus can't match well the 2d drawing.

Also, thinking back at my Dora project, one also can't easily use math and look at proportions when comparing to photos, because there might be some distortion in the photo that makes linear measurements impossible.

Afaik I read that the kit makers had pro help with this kit, so I wouldn't think they got the major parts wrong.
1 July 2020, 19:46
Choppa Nutta
The differences look due to perspective distortion to me....
print out the scale drawing to the correct size and compare directly with the model using a set square etc. 🙂
1 July 2020, 19:49
Treehugger
Btw, I have a special hatred against 2d drawings from the internet. I once asked for construction drawings from the company that makes the Bell 412, but the drawings were 'proprietary'. They did however give me promo stuff that contained some engineering drawings that was apparently super accurate. So that worked. Usually I just end up getting annoyed when finding 2d drawings on the internet, and often the drawing has all kinds of errors in it, and many looks nice but was perhaps only made to look "technical" without being accurate. 😄 Your drawing looks ok though I would think.
1 July 2020, 19:54
Slavo Hazucha
There definitely is merit to what Treehugger & Choppa (formerly wrongly called Munky by me here...) write - you would be better, there is quite a bit of perspective and angling, best seen on the dashboard - not saying it solves every issue, but the differences could be much less dramatic...

In any case, I hope this does not bomb the project, it's all too great looking for that!
1 July 2020, 20:10
Hanno Kleinecke
A very good modeling friend of mine told me: „You are always your own worst enemy". 🙂 The way I see it, this will be a treat for the eyes when finished, no matter what. Keep going !

Slavo, did you just call me Munky ? 🙂
1 July 2020, 21:29

2 July 2020, 04:57

Try to make the same drawing with a top view of the helicopter, I think that gives less distortion. I didn't measure my Huey to a plan but I thunk it's a valuable test for a new model.

Thanks for the comments and support Mates. Yesterday I have discussed the problem with my coreferent (DF). The fuselage area behind the door is too long (cabin is too far in front), so that the door is for open presantation „too short". Today morning with the 2nd cup coffee in my hand I had an idea to solve the problem: extended the lenght of the door (even if the door seems to be right in the length…).
On course again🙂
2 July 2020, 08:40
Choppa Nutta
. It is impressive the lengths you go to in order to get things just right !! 🙂
2 July 2020, 10:13
Slavo Hazucha
If the plan drawing is 48-scale, why not just measure the distances section-by-section on the model and compare with the lines/measures on paper and find out where (if any) culprit is hiding? 🙂
2 July 2020, 10:57
Treehugger
I felt stupid rushing into this, so I deleted the last few comments. I suppose Bernard might be onto something. I find it interesting that, on model photos of the Kitty Hawk kit, with an open side door, there is this open space behind the door, and so it would be interesting imo to check that small excess space against photos of the UH-1D showing an open side door. Here is someone elses KH model: ibb.co/4YzJCRS (I made a circle around the area behind the door for sake of clarity.)
2 July 2020, 11:03
Treehugger
Tricky but I found a relevant photo, which looks like the UH-1D: ibb.co/LrYs0Fw (image upload showing the space just behind the side door.)

Added: Here is also a photo of the UH-1N: Also, not much space behind the open side door: ibb.co/7tzbkvr (image upload)

Well shit :| Well I say just try ignore this, if the kit isn't 100%. 🙂 Afaik, only licenced kit makers might get proprietary drawings. Hehe, Bernhard is the last person on earth to buy the Dora railcannon kit in 1:72 scale, a fantasy kit where everything is basically whacky wrong when comparing to photos. 🙂 A wip project of mine. Will have to buy a lathe machine to make the barrel and wheels in the future and fix a bazillion things, a complete rebuild with new construction drawings.

I wonder if maybe this KH kit could be from prototype drawings of the UH-1D, and maybe there was some difference from the production model and any prototype models.

Added: I can't help but wonder if *maybe*, this overlap of the end of the side door and the fuselage, was somehow causing comfusion by the ones doing the drawings or the cad model, making the area behind the side door longer by that much (the overlap), as if forgetting that there is an overlap inbetween the rear part of the side doors, and the heli fuselage.
2 July 2020, 11:09
Clifford Keesler
You are doing a great job on this kit Bernhard. Don't give up on it.

Aux fueltank looking very realistic !
I wonder what this amount of weight, concentrated on the port side, did to the aircrafts trim......
4 July 2020, 18:45

Adding all this stuff looks like a challenge for painting the stuff. I wouldn't want to having to start masking stuff only to paint stuff on the inside of the cabin.

Pfew.... Bernhard is adding new pictures! Disaster avoided.... 🙂
5 July 2020, 13:43

Bernhard, with all the added detail - the cockpit pillars, tank & straps, gitterbox on the other side & all the stuff not mentioned, no one is ever going to even think about checking any dimensions here... Top-spec research & implementation! 👍
5 July 2020, 14:13

The interior is really well done!
11 July 2020, 18:26
Bernhard Schrock
First I would thank you for the likes and nice comments. After a good modeling day and intensive consultations with my Senior Huey Consultant (THX David) 🙂 I managed around noon to complete the cabin interior. Just now at dinner I realized that I forgot to build in the hoist.....
11 July 2020, 18:29
Treehugger
That is a nice hoist. 🙂

Hm.. I wonder if anybody makes vacuum canopy parts for the Kitty Hawk Huey's. Probably not, but that would be nice. Having said that, I guess it is entirely possible the clear parts are really nice. I've started buying vacuum canopies for various kits, when I find them on sale. 🙂 Sometimes, without having the kit to go with it.

The interior in full color looks epic! 👍 You and your consultant are setting a benchmark for excellent-looking, true to original model-making here... Especially like all the "telephone cables" and the line with the hooks + the consistency in scale appearance of it all!

Cabin roof, fuselage top and engine bay in place. I recommend the following sequence: B34 first (not together with B30), B34. Then step 7 of the instruction sheet in following sequence: B5, B13, B7, C82/83.
12 July 2020, 08:52

Question to Bernhard, do you like trying to round off the hard metal edge off PE parts sometimes? 🙂
13 July 2020, 16:25

I have to smile at the spiral wiring for the top side cockpit suff. 🙂 Maybe some kind of comms stuff.

Augh. The Kitty Hawk release seems worse every week . :| Even the box art got the canopy front glass right, but perhaps they lazily copied one side of the front glass onto the other side, including the one unique angled corner. :| Obviously Kitty Hawk don't know what they are doing at this point, unless somehow there are UH1-D's with that angled corner on both sides of the front glass. I had such high hopes for that kit release, being a new UH1-D and all. No way I am going to bother paying out of my nose for the UH-1N version ever, but maybe at some serious discount.

I am sure your model will end up looking very nice though. 🙂
29 July 2020, 11:08

Bernhard, du machst ja wieder Sachen... 🙂
29 July 2020, 16:29
Bernhard Schrock
After gluing the windscreen I began with the detailing the fuselage. While detailing the nose I realized that KH's lower windows are wider than windows on Bundeswehr machines (compare the pictures 83 and 84). It turned out that all BE machines were produced by Dornier and they were different from the original Bell produced helicopters.
29 July 2020, 18:57
Slavo Hazucha
While the KH kit appears to be remarkably "buildable", at least in relation to the usual manufacturer reputation (nice parts/problematic fit/horrible build-group design is all that comes to mind...), the comparison with what you aim to build is an outright minefield... What's up next, a three-bladed main rotor?😉

I watch your valiant and creative build with growing interest though, every challenge followed by an adequate solution - keep it up and the laurels of ultimate victory shall rightfully be bestowed upon you! 👍
29 July 2020, 19:06

I had some problems with orange covering over white primer, so I'm curious how well the yellow base coat improves the orange paint's opacity. Bring it on! 🙂
2 August 2020, 22:21
Bernhard Schrock
Patrick; what is the reason why do you use white as base color? Imo white is not optimal base for colors such orange or red. The "difference" is to great to produce a homogeneous saturation. As usual I'm using for orange yellow as base and for red pinkish grey as base (see f.e. the NH-3 album).

3 August 2020, 16:43
Slavo Hazucha
Looking almost like the "Bronze Tiger" Typhoon type of Orange in those pics😉 And really good work with the faded touches!

I don't get to do much of Orange works myself unfortunately, but I'd say this color & its tonal brethren really are essentially very social creatures... It just matters that bit more what's under them & next them to bring out the right final tone... 🙂

Seeing you treat the Geisha-esque art of Orange/Red & White, I'm sure the German Green-Orange coupling will come out just as great... 👍
3 August 2020, 17:09
Pero Susinger
This indeed looks more like a bronze than an orange. But in the end the result is important. Or how we in Germany say: "Entscheidend ist, was hinten rauskommt." 😄
And I have no doubts at all that this will end how it has started: exceptional.

9 August 2020, 12:46

Picture 105; Treehugger: you have eagle eyes! This is a 3D decal by DF Helostuff for representing the typical UH-1 - anti skid coating. Excellent printed and easy to applying.

With great enthusiasm I mixed the RAL 6014 again and airbrushed yesterday the entire fuselage. While doing this I made a stupid mistake: I didn't check if the color matches what I already painted (boom). So the fuselage is greener than the rest 🙁
Fortunately I managed to fix this easily. As soon I was finished I discovered after removing the window masks a further problem: obviously I mest the masking of the windows openings and so both middle and both upper windows are full of airbrushing dust (inner side🙁😢. It took me about one hour of cleaning up with micro brushes and acid. 🙂

Superb work from the very beginning and a great first bunch of finished pictures indeed 👍 Impossible to pick one highlight, the whole thing & project is a highlight start to finish... 🙂

I really like watching your projects (similar to bughunters) - you apply engineering solutions I could not (and often do not even feel the urge to...) replicate - sometimes I steal and massively simplify an idea at best - but it´s an extremely satisfactory feeling to watch & see come to bear fruit... 👍

Thank you for the nice comments. I had great luck by building this machine because get tons of original pics and buildings hints (thx David🙂. KH's kit is a good base but unfortunately not free of errors.
Maverick212: I used thin black anodized wire (0,1 mm and 0,2 mm) purchased any years ago by Rairo (a modelshop in Germany).
