I've been curious about this particular kit. 🙂 I'll follow you and check it out.

Me too.

I remember building a Voodoo jet as a kit a long time ago. 🙂 Would be nice to do it again.

Lets watch Clifford 'You do that Voodoo that he does so well'. 😉 (An old song ) Eagerly watching mate. 👍 🙂

Thank you all very much. Welcome aboard.

Welcome Donald.

And here we go again. 😉

Clifford Keesler
Yes, but I had to order the SAC metal gear for it, nose gear strut is fragile and very fiddily. I broke it already so it's metal gear for this one. Meanwhile work continues on the pit. LOL.
30 June 2019, 21:23
Jens
I am also curious 🙂 👍
30 June 2019, 21:36
Slavo Hazucha
Permission to get on board please! Looking forward to some NMF groove...😉

Bryn Crandell
I'm in. A friend has this kit. I'll have to warn him about the fiddly nose gear.
1 July 2019, 18:14
Nathan Dempsey
Oooh nice choice Clifford.
1 July 2019, 18:16
Clifford Keesler
Thanks Jens Slavo Bryn and Nathan. @ Bryn, yes the small parts on the nose gear a very hard to get off the sprue without breaking them, and they do not fit real well. It is ate up with ejector pin marks all over, but I will not be defeated. LOL. I don't believe in "non buildable" kits. The pit is painted and PE installed. I installed the kit supplied PE, then put the decals over that and settled them in with copious amounts of Micro Sol, as the kit supplied PE is unpainted brass.

Voodoo, Voodooo, Voodoo.. normal seat ok?

You know you are always welcome Augie. LOL.

Quick update, pit is finished and nose gear well is painted and installed. I will try and get some pictures up tomorrow after I get home from the dentist.

Dentist visit due to gnashing of teeth re nose u/c? 😄

Urban Gardini
Interesting, as much as I dislike Kitty Hawk they've got two kits that I want to build. The RF-101 and the upcoming SU-25K. So I'll follow your build closely so I see just how horrible the Voodoo kit is...
3 July 2019, 09:57
Slavo Hazucha
Are Kittyhawks really that bad? I heard a lot indicating that direction & I never built one - looking at the sprues of some of them though I wonder what should make them such a bad deal - or does it start when you actually try to put something together?

Anyway, looking forward to some work-in-progress pictures!
3 July 2019, 14:04
Urban Gardini
They tend to look lovely upon the sprue but hell is just around the corner. They're not that well thought through when it comes to build engineering...
3 July 2019, 17:48
Donald Dickson II
Urban, how so? I have a few if their kits in the wings.
3 July 2019, 19:40
Clifford Keesler
Their kits are very modular in their assembley. My main frustration is the number of ejector pin marks. They do seem to tackle subjects most other companies ignore. I just got the F9F-8/F9F-8P today. It actually looks pretty nice. I know the Voodoo has it's faults, but I in no way feel that it is Unbuildable. Besides who else offers a F-101A or RF-101A in 1/48 scale.
3 July 2019, 22:46
Clifford Keesler
I did not get any work done on it today, but I will tomorrow, and I will get some more pictures up.

Making progress.
5 July 2019, 23:34
Nathan Dempsey
Starting to take shape there Clifford. So how's the fit so far?
6 July 2019, 00:08
Clifford Keesler
Thank you Nathan. So far the fit is good, none of the horror's I have read about.
6 July 2019, 00:15
Slavo Hazucha
Nice progress, cockpit in position & looking fine there + assembly looks manageable so far 🙂
6 July 2019, 06:37
Clifford Keesler
So far I have had no problems, it is segmented like you say, but fit has been good. The only thing I have found, was the nose cone was a little over sized. But I sanded it to where it fit, and put a small bit of putty on it.
6 July 2019, 22:06
Konrad -
Looking very nice Clifford! It looks like a must have... 🙂
6 July 2019, 22:14
Clifford Keesler
I am completely enjoying the snot out of building this kit. None (0) of the horror stories in the build reviews have materlized. Latest one to go down in flames, (The Intakes don't fit, you have to sand them thinner and grind a groove in them. I installed mine and put the fuselage top and bottom back tighter to see how they fit. Well they fit like a glove. Except for the ejector pins, I have had no problems with this kit. The nose gear was my fault not the kits. I have fixed it and it looks fine. So guess I will save the metal ones that are coming for the RF-101C that is on it's way. I will build the wings tomorrow. I plan on installing the engines and complete the fuselage, so that it is a complete unit, then install the wings.

I think we have a happy chappie with a tube of glue in his hand. 👍 👍 👍 😉
7 July 2019, 00:36
Nathan Dempsey
Good to hear Clifford! I have their RF-101 and I didn't notice any problems doing dry fit. I think the multi-part fuselage does require one to go a little slower with the build though. I'm so slow though, so that is never an issue.
7 July 2019, 01:14
Slavo Hazucha
Good to hear that - latest when the Su-57 gets on sale, I'll be in for a Kitty Hawk model... Until then, I am content to watch you mates struggle with yours😉
7 July 2019, 06:30
Clifford Keesler
Thank you Kerry, Nathan and Slavo. Your kind words give me more motivation. I now have a one piece complete fuselage. I will try and get some more pictures up tomorrow.
8 July 2019, 02:33
Kerry COX
NO pressure applied Clifford. ! Pace and place one bit at a time. 😉 👍
8 July 2019, 04:11
Clifford Keesler
Was at the doctor all day so did not get any pictures done. Will try tomorrow. Hopefully the putty and Mr. Surfacer will be dry and I can start sanding the fuselage.
9 July 2019, 00:25
Nathan Dempsey
First off may I say I hope your health is a-ok. Secondly, the progress looks good on the Voodoo. She's a rather large bird!
10 July 2019, 19:10
Clifford Keesler
Thank you Nathan, I am fine, was just my yearly check up. Yes she is rather large, it doesn't seem so when it is in the box with the fuselage in a bunch of pieces. I spent the morning sanding the fuselage. Will get the wings sanded tomorrow, and installed. Maybe I will be able to get some primer on it this weekend, so I can see what imperfections I have to fix. LOL. The Alclad paint showed up in the mail today.
10 July 2019, 19:24
Konrad -
Very nice Clifford! She's indeed a big one. Can't wait to see her primed 👍!
10 July 2019, 19:48
Slavo Hazucha
Kind of an anti-Michelangelo approach, not removing marble to unveil the statue inside, but adding putty to fill-out the plane outside... You're doing fine, it's going to be a masterpiece😉
10 July 2019, 19:52
Maciej Bellos
Turning up rather late. She looks impressive.
10 July 2019, 21:05
Jens
when I see the pictures, then I remember my SH 2, sinking, ejecting marks thick as extra sprues
Kitty Hawk or Putty Hawk, somewhere the company name should be in between 😄
10 July 2019, 21:16
Clifford Keesler
Thank you Hans, Konrad , Slavo, Maciej and Jens. I think maybe I kind of over did the putty. It probally did not need that much on the intakes. @Jens the over size ejector pins have not been to many. There were a couple on the control surfaces, and in the tail pipes. Most of the problems I have had have been of my own doing.
10 July 2019, 21:23
Michael Hickey
Coming along nicely Cliffy.👍
11 July 2019, 01:45
Michael Phillips
Now this is coming right along... looking great so far Cliff! I think the Voodoo is my favorite century series aircraft(although I do prefer the twin seaters), so I am eager to see how you progress. I have not seen too many of these KH F-101As built.
11 July 2019, 16:49
Stephan Ryll
Nice progress Clifford 👍
11 July 2019, 17:31
Nikolaos Kouzinis
Nice job Cliff
11 July 2019, 21:12
Clifford Keesler
Thank you Michael, Michael, Stephan and Nikolaos. It is going well. The wings are on now and flap bays and main gear bays are painted. Exhauhst nozzels are primed and ready for paint. The only problem I have had is with the gun muzzles, they were a bit over sized, but some sanding took care of that. Hope to paint the flaps tomorrow, and mask and install the canopy(temp) and then I can get some primer on it.
13 July 2019, 00:29
Michael Hickey
Sounds like a plan, stan. Looking forward to seeing more happy snaps.👍🙂
13 July 2019, 01:33
Clifford Keesler
I will try and get some more tomorrow.
13 July 2019, 05:18
Clifford Keesler
Thank you very much James. Hopefully I will get her primed tomorrow, and find all those illusive little scratches, you thought you got rid of. LOL. And I will take some more pictures. I tried today but the battery in my camera died, so have it charging.
15 July 2019, 02:59
Kerry COX
It looks straight forward.............but I am guessing it will take on a whole different perspective as the build progresses. 😉
15 July 2019, 03:53
Clifford Keesler
Thanks Kerry. It is primed now.
16 July 2019, 16:42
Nathan Dempsey
Even though it is just primer, I have to admit that Voodoo looks cool in black. 🙂
16 July 2019, 20:16
Slavo Hazucha
It looks & even sounds good... Black Voodoo - could be a seriously good 70´ies Heavy Metal Band!😉
16 July 2019, 20:21
Konrad -
Yeah I'm with Nathan and Slavo 👍! It looks cool in black 🙂!
16 July 2019, 20:31
Daniel Klink
Just Voodoo... I*m in👍
16 July 2019, 20:32
Chris Greathouse
That black pulls me into an empty seat!
16 July 2019, 20:39
Clifford Keesler
Thanks Nathan, Slavo, Konrad, Daniel and Chris. Alas this one will be silver. The one I am modeling was stationed at RAF Brentwaters, and it was not actually NMF. It was painted in what they called coroguard. So it will not be dull but not ultra shiny either, as the coroguard weathered rapidly in the English weather. I saw on line where a guy did an RF-101B in black. I have been kicking that around, if I can find decals for it. Meanwhile I am working on this one and the Vark.
17 July 2019, 00:15
Stephan Ryll
Nice progress Clifford 👍
17 July 2019, 16:16
John Ballman
Looking good, interesting build. Thanks for sharing this.
17 July 2019, 17:05

Thank you Stephan and John. I should get the first colors on tomorrow.
18 July 2019, 00:39
Urban Gardini
Looking forward to that...
18 July 2019, 21:12
Clifford Keesler
Aluminum basecoat done.
18 July 2019, 21:17
Slavo Hazucha
The filling and sanding were spot on - looks like one consistent mass in silver, you kept the upper hand with that challenging segmentation. 👍 Are you going for the box art markings with the yellow tail? Should look rather spectacular!
18 July 2019, 21:18
Clifford Keesler
Yes, I am doing the boxart one.
18 July 2019, 21:20
Clifford Keesler
Thank you for your kind words.
18 July 2019, 21:21

Thank you James, very much. I will vary some panel colors tomorrow after it has dried overnight,

Paint finally done. Will apply the clear coat tomorrow, after paint has cured overnight.
19 July 2019, 22:14
Slavo Hazucha
Very nice NMF panelwork Clifford - Visible, but not overshot in tone or complexity - this is going to be one fine bird when all comes together!
19 July 2019, 22:28
Nathan Dempsey
Holy cow Clifford! I'm gone for a day or so and you've got a lovely silvery bird replacing the black one.
20 July 2019, 01:34
Clifford Keesler
Thank you Slavo and Nathan, your encouragement means a lot. I had to go up and paint the wing fences yellow. I forgot them. LOL.
20 July 2019, 02:36
Kerry COX
Clifford. Excuse my ignorance, but did you mention in one of your posts on 'Voodoo' what paints you were using. ? As the silver look really smooth and blemish free. 😉 👍
20 July 2019, 13:21
Clifford Keesler
I used Vallejo's acrylic Metalizer paints. Aluminum, White Aluminum, Dura Aluminum and Tamiya Titatiaum. Plus Model Master Buffing burnt metal and buffing exhausht. Thank you for the compaliment. I bought Alclad's for it but chickened out. LOL.
20 July 2019, 21:38
Kerry COX
Clifford. Thank you for that info mate. 👍
I am always wondering how others are getting such good results with the paints I have used and very rarely get as good a result like yours. 😉
Alclad IS an acquired taste really. 🙂
The buffing metalizers are my staple fare when it comes to that true metal finish.
Cheers. 👍
20 July 2019, 23:21
Michael Hickey
She's starting to look good now Cliffy.👍
21 July 2019, 00:59

Thank you very much Michael and Jos, your kind words mean a lot. The right side is now decaled.
22 July 2019, 01:22

Decals almost finished. More pictures tomorrow.
23 July 2019, 00:03
Slavo Hazucha
Decals look good, that yellow adding an excellent contrast and "drama" to the overall appearance. Will be great😉
23 July 2019, 22:57
Clifford Keesler
Thank you very much Slavo.
23 July 2019, 23:25
Nathan Dempsey
I agree, that yellow looks great. I think I may choose the yellow markings on my RF-101 now.
24 July 2019, 01:27
Michael Hickey
That yellow really pops, like the others have said, and the rest of the decals look awesome too.👍
24 July 2019, 02:00
Clifford Keesler
Thank you very much Nathan and Michael.

24 July 2019, 16:13

Thank you very much Konrad and Stephan. She is now sitting on her legs and the final clear coats are curing. Tommorow I hope to apply the weathering and install the flaps, and get it unmasked and finished up.
26 July 2019, 01:28
Donald Dickson II
I like it a lot sir! As has been said, that yellow jumps at you!
26 July 2019, 01:33
Clifford Keesler
Thanks Donald, your kind words mean a lot.
26 July 2019, 01:36

Almost there! Looking forward to the finale with curtains removed on the canopy and some great job-finished shots! This will be a home run😉

Very nice progress Clifford 👍 that bird is looking cool
26 July 2019, 16:52

Thank you very much Slavo, Stephan and James. Your kind words give me much needed inspiration. I applied the weathering wash today, so tomorrow I will remove it, unmask it and install the flaps. Job done.
27 July 2019, 00:37

The panel line accentuation should be the high light of the build, bringing to life a beautifully built kit. 👍 🙂 Nicely done Clifford. 😉
28 July 2019, 01:35
Clifford Keesler
Thank you Kerry. It is finished, getting ready to upload the finished pictures now.
