Good start, Lukasz! Nice work on the pilots - even got their ties painted!

Nice start!

Thanks, I just re-checked and yes, the ties will be visible through the windscreen 😄

Interesting new project , Lukasz, I like to know your opinion on this old kit.

Welcome Erik. So far I can say the fuselage fit is not bad, but far from perfect and I started to wonder how to preserve the original riveting... Windscreen is either too low or too short and will require some putty for sure. Another thing is a really thick trailing edge - I haven't decided yet how to handle this. Please bear in mind that this is OOB build and I'm not planning to do a lot of scratchbuilding. 🙂

As the fit is not perfect I decided to sand it smooth everywhere including the trailing edges.
So now the biggest question remains - to re-rivet or not?
Have your say, however I'm not so much convinced 'rivets' will be visible after priming and painting to be honest (and I'm quite lazy too😉 ).

Rerivetting this kit would be a rough task... It would look great but it would be a pain. Your choice.

Still thinking of it 🙂 But in the meantime I can paraphrase The Cake and Zeev Tene by singing 'I sanded Bristol every night..."😉

The venerable Airfix one! Hope this goes well for you!!

Thanks, it goes on, but not sure it goes so well😉 The quality of the kit is appaling. I managed to sand it smooth last weeks and did some research in the meantime. It turnes out each Superfreighter had a different window and door layout. Both Airfix and S&M assumed wrong amount of windows on G-APAV. So I have to fill some of them (see pics) and decided not to re-rivet the thing, except for scribing some main panel lines here and there. Moreover S&M decals lack the anti-glare panel and 'AV' letters on the front door.

Sanding seems to be over and I started to research the liveries. I haven't found a colour pic of G-APAV carrying khaki-blue stripes, but I'm too lazy to paint the blue ones 🙂 But I have to find matching colours as BAF Superfreighters seem to have the stripes painted also on the wings' undersides. Neither Airfix nor S&M supply the red signs below some windows, so I will have to source them in my spare box. And there's some sort of a lantern on the top of the tail, so I have to fake it too 🙂

Lukasz, you could use part 58 of the Italeri Dakota for the "lantern". Some DC 3 had also this top light beacon

Thanks for the hint Erik, I'll check whether I haven't thrown it away already😉 In the meantime I scratchbuilt it, but maybe the transparent top would be of use...
As I study the last pic more I find more discrepancies 🙂 Today I spotted there are additional tiny windows above and behind the left cockpit. As I already started spraying the white part, I'm going to simulate them using the decals.
I have to ask y'all for some help though - I assume the wings are aluminium on the topside, but can you spot the grey stripes behind the engines that Airfix suggests?
4 November 2019, 20:47
Erik De Smet
Lukasz, if you search for Bristol 170 on airliners.net , you find some pictures where you can see the grey line on the upper wings near the engines. It looks like some protective coat .

Spraying completed, couple of touch-ups will be needed, but I'm very pleased with the result.
Thx Erik, the grey bands have been included as you can see 👍

Decals on, wondering whether to leave it this way or to switch to some OOB livery instead...

Looking for support - I found the Mk.32s have the wire aerial connecting cockpit with the tail, but can't locate where it starts behind the cockpit. Anybody got a clue?

I think it depended on the radios fitted to the aircraft...

G-APAV a little later in life, but doesn't look like an ADF Aerial is mointed on this airframe...

No more wiring? That's a tempting idea 🙂
I have a fork antenna in my scrapyard

nice build so far. That marking of BAF makes me laugh a bit. Our Belgian airforce is also shortened as BAF, and it's also the sound somethings makes when falling on the floor, like our older aircraft sometimes tend to do...
31 January 2020, 17:12
Łukasz Gliński
Yeah, the sound of it is like a small dog's bark😉
In the meantime I started working on the engines - they don't have exhausts and their cover; trying to simulate these.
It turned out G-APAV has some additional framing on the side windows - I used the white stripe decal.
And I draw something resembling (IMHO) the kind of slots, where the back side windows are sliding. I should have carved it before priming, but somehow I missed it.

Thanks, the sprues are really old and badly detailed, so it won't look like aircraft carrier kitchen😉

Nice pipes exhaust in engines, Łukasz!
Maybe you can build an aircraft carrier kitchen on them 😛

Still couple of details to go before announcing it finished

Completed, finally. I had to fake the emergency exit stencils, using some stuff from different decalset leftovers. The biggest issue I found too late is the "British Air Ferries" sign on the starboard side being waaaaay to far back. Lesson learned: never trust the instructions! As I don't have the spare sign I left it as it is. Hope you like it though.
Now I have to find a place to take the proper pics, it's huuuuuge 😭

Many thanks mates, though I find 'excellent' bit overrated😉
Nevertheless a hint for other builders: this kit requires a lot of effort and I recommend making your own canopy.

Terrific result in the end Łukasz, and I know the pain was worth the gain....go safely in these times!

Thanks Andy, staying safe all the time - the first week of lockdown has just passed by😉
Luckily Valom's Feighter is incoming, so now it's time for a Mk.32 conversion set, then nobody would have to follow me😉
