You have some work ahead of you, but count me in!

The trick with vac forms is to CUT and SAND carefully!!! Keep checking the fit of parts before going too far. Don't forget to reinforce joins with plastic strips (from the leftover plastic) and make bulkheads to stop the plastic collapsing when handled. Add wing spars made from soild plastic or wood or metal can help stop wings drooping. The undercarrige is often the biggest problem sometimes too weak. If they haven't given you metal or plastic or resin parts for that i often find replacement parts for the wheels too! Sometimes it's the only choice you have for some subjects. Good Luck

Łukasz Gliński
Actually when I assembled the main parts I didn't know much of those advices, so I don't expect much from the fuselage and wings😉
But I decided to sand down to the proper shape the wings'/control surfaces' ends by adding new HIPS parts.
I sand them every now and then, but now it's time to concentrate on the cockpit.
I hope I'll be patient enough to supply this thread with new pics 🙂

I spent couple of hours today trying to form replacement canopy and I didn't manage to accomplish the mission. Still thinking whether I should try again (not really keen to) or to use the one from the kit - which is quite fawlty (clearly visible on the last photo). What do you think?
30 December 2016, 20:15
Adam Gudynowski
Followong! Great topic!
31 December 2016, 00:32
Ekki
Watching too.

Łukasz Gliński
Welcome mates, don't hesitate to have your say 🙂

Vacform! Your a braver man that I Lukasz. I can see what you mean about the canopy, but if you use it, when the model is complete, the only person that will notice, will probably be you. It's no biggie - I could live with it, but can you?

Following.

Working on the plug lately, in order to mould a new canopy soon
13 April 2017, 20:18
Adam Gudynowski
Do the wheels from F-5E fit or are just similar?
13 April 2017, 21:20
Bart Goesaert
impressive project, and a nice aircraft... do you want to do the weapon load-out from the picture? Armory has some really nice ones
14 April 2017, 07:16
Łukasz Gliński
@Adam: I found a build report in the last edition of "Lotnictwo z Szachownicą" and the author mentioned they fit, so I decided to follow that hint as the rest of the kit is enough time consuming😉
@Bart: Yes, I plan to attach some UB rocket pods and the small bombs visible on the project cover pic. I'm gonna use either the ones from Armory or from the KP's Frogfoot kit. But it's far away from now😉

Łukasz Gliński
After around 5 failed attempts to form a replacement canopy I came back to consider mounting the OOB one. I know it's visible, but there are many other simplifications in my build, like undercarriage for example. In the meantime I masked the cockpit tub and I'm sanding & scribing again 🙂
10 May 2017, 19:59
Bart Goesaert
Can you tell me more about what went wrong, and how you work for the canopy?
11 May 2017, 06:54
Łukasz Gliński
Well, I made the plug out of wood, putty and some CA glue. I tried to press it thorugh some transparent packagings over a cooker 🙂
Tried couple f times and always ruptured the stuff. Maybe I should use some oil?
On the other hand I know that the professional way is to build a tool like that: ipmsstockholm.org/ma..oulding_canopies.htm, but I'm not sure whether such investment makes sense for just a single canopy.
I even started to consider mounting the open canopy, but not sure whether the interior is good enough...
12 May 2017, 18:45
Bart Goesaert
As for now, I've made my plugs approx. the same, but i make the lower borders further then they should be, so that I keep a straight line after cutting. Then I take a straight sheet of clear packaging, heat it above the furnace till it's starts to hang. Then I pull it over the plug manually.

I also think that for RC -aircraft, there is some plastic that you can melt over the plug in an oven.
16 May 2017, 08:56
Łukasz Gliński
Thanks Bart for inspiration, I tried once again, this time inside the oven using gloves and not trying to push the plug through the flat plexi, but a bent one and it helped. Probably this was the missing piece of technique 🙂
It's bi flat over the front seat, but barely visible for me. It made my day😉
16 May 2017, 17:30
Bart Goesaert
Glad it worked out. Looks good
16 May 2017, 20:07
Martien Lourens
interesting subject. Count me in.
23 May 2017, 06:12
Łukasz Gliński
Welcome Martien. Currently I started scribing, but there will be almost a 3 weeks break as I'm going for holidays. I'm gonna continue scribing in the 2nd half of June.
23 May 2017, 07:00
Christian Bruer
Interesting and challenging project. Very nice and sharp work so far 👍
Thank you Łukasz and Bart for sharing the hints about vacu forming. I never tried this before, but it is a good method replacing scale 144 canopies because most of them are much to thick.
23 May 2017, 18:34
Łukasz Gliński
Welcome Christian. I guess 144 canopies will be much easier to bend around the plug, which in turn will be twice smaller 🙂 Good luck and keep us posted how it went 🙂
23 May 2017, 19:31
Christian Bruer
Thx Łukasz, yep I will do when I start doing a vacu form canopy😉
24 May 2017, 19:26
Łukasz Gliński
Masked the canopy finally, I know it's not perfect, but I'm happy with it. Now it's the time to blend it into the fuselage, so few days of sanding ahead of me 🙂
9 July 2017, 19:14
Łukasz Gliński
Managed to blend the canopy into the fuselage (moreless), currently trying to scribe some convincing panel lines. As it's a vacuformed kit, I spent last two weekends scribing, filling with CA and sanding (in repeated turns of course). No idea when she's gonna be ready for painting 🙁

Alexander Grivonev
Yeah, vacu kits are for true men (or masochists 😄 ) but for some aircraft types you have no choice...had the pleasure once myself with a Yak-11 from Waku. Turned out surprisingly well. Never heared of your aircraft type before. Looks great so far!
24 September 2017, 20:29
Łukasz Gliński
Thanx Alex. Luckily there are other Yak-11s available - one can be seen among my completed works 🙂 Well, I-22 was an interesting story, but w/o a happy-end unfortunately...
25 September 2017, 06:54
Łukasz Gliński
Just for those who want to know what I'm doing - I keep on scribing and sanding (in turns)😉
17 October 2017, 20:48
Bart Goesaert
Enjoy
18 October 2017, 05:06
Łukasz Gliński
Oh thanks 😭 This is the least enjoyable part for me unfortunately. I can hardly wait to start painting...
18 October 2017, 06:03
Bart Goesaert
I can imagine, but afterwards, it can be satisfying...
18 October 2017, 08:29

Decided to try scratchbuilding the landing gear, keep your fingers crossed! 🙂

Adam Gudynowski
Looks promising 👍

Nice start with the landing gear

Cuajete
Łukasz, you are doing a hard and good job. Following!
23 June 2018, 18:40
Łukasz Gliński
Thx, doing my best, but I broke off the nose accidentially today 🙂 Managed to fix it already, now it's time for the pylons and hopefully I can start painting then...
23 June 2018, 20:49
Adam Gudynowski
Painful view 🙁
25 June 2018, 12:19
Martin von Schreckenstein
haha, vacuform is where I draw the line between building models and straight up pain🙂 You are fighting a solid fight there. I admire your patience. Looking forward to the finish line. Keep it up!
25 June 2018, 13:41
Łukasz Gliński
Thanks for your comments mates. Well, I got bit annoyed, but was able to fix it. Fingers crossed I didn't destroy the inside of the cockpit (as I can't see too much of it currently. I just found out I forgot to add the huge Iskra-like pitots on both wings. Hopefully this is the last thing I forgot before painting 🙂
25 June 2018, 14:02
Glenn
Wow this has been a real pain in the a$$ kit! But i admire your will to keep on going. It's looking pretty good hopefully the worst is over now! 🙂
25 June 2018, 16:51
Łukasz Gliński
Thx Glenn. It's been a while and I started painting - sand is on, the green is drying. Those two first, cause they are the enamel ones, grey and blue will follow soon I hope.
Btw. can anybody recommend a company that could print decals or cut masks for the registration (SP-PWE) for that project? (let say in Yurop, so I won't get killed by the postage cost😉 )
1 August 2018, 11:00
Łukasz Gliński
Painted it, though the yellow one (mix of two Humbrol enamels) likes the Gunze maskol too much and either comes off upon demasking or becomes greenish. I have to respray it once again.
Next step? I have to order masks for the registration letters somewhere...
19 August 2018, 18:20
Cuajete
Nice details and pretty scheme.
19 August 2018, 19:23
Łukasz Gliński
Thank you, there other flaws anyway😉
19 August 2018, 19:30
Alexander Grivonev
Respect for the patience and dedication on this little piece of nightmare😄 painjob is very nice!!
19 August 2018, 19:36
Łukasz Gliński
Thanks Alex, it's a nightmare indeed, that's why I don't hurry and don't expect this to be flawless😉
19 August 2018, 20:39
Bart Goesaert
It sure is looking good... I admire your patience with this kit... Ok it's a virtue for most modellers, but to me you are stretching the boundaries...
20 August 2018, 05:15
Łukasz Gliński
Well, that's why the progress is so slow. I'm quite afraid what I'll find after removal of the windscreen masks..
20 August 2018, 06:42
Cuajete
I have a Matchbox's Hunter, with the masks on the windshield for more than two years. I think it's better to wait for them to disintegrate on their own 😄 😄 😄
20 August 2018, 17:22
Łukasz Gliński
LOL 😄
20 August 2018, 19:57
Łukasz Gliński
Finally varnished the kit and removed the masks - it looks better than I expected, but the results of the broken nose could be seen in the cockpit (e.g. one of the lead pellets). I removed it today (had to open the windshield), will try to clean the windshield from the inside in the meantime.
23 September 2018, 20:20
Cuajete
Looking good, Łukasz😉
24 September 2018, 17:35
Glenn
It's looking good Lukasz, I think you polished this T#rd! 🙂
25 September 2018, 03:02
Łukasz Gliński
Thanks mates. Well, it's hard to polish (capital letter neeeded here? 😛 ) the canopy from the inside, so Gauzy Agent has to be good enough. But I promise to use GX varnish and polish it on the outside 🙂
25 September 2018, 06:01
Łukasz Gliński
Alright, canopy closed back and sealed using the Micro Cristal Clear, enjoy the pics 🙂 Now time to source the 'SP-PWE' masks and start building pylons...
1 October 2018, 19:52
Cuajete
Good reconstruction, Łukasz. Now is time to watch those pylons! 🙂
2 October 2018, 08:59
Łukasz Gliński
Picked up the masks yesterday. Today was the spray day and I think the results are good enough, even surprisingly good 🙂 Sprayed using GX white and Gunze C2. Imagine that GX is so strong that it started to fold like a decal sometimes 😠
There are some minor corrections needed here and there in order to move to the pylons scratchbuilding 🙂
27 October 2018, 20:05
Bart Goesaert
Nice, did you have these masks custom made?
27 October 2018, 20:48
Łukasz Gliński
Yes, I ordered them at a local printshop. The 'S' letter is too thin, but I can live with it.
28 October 2018, 07:37
Cuajete
Nice mask print, Łukasz!
28 October 2018, 18:25
Łukasz Gliński
Thx, it went surprisingly well I have to admit 🙂 I was afraid the paint underneath the masks will be peeled off (couldn't find better wording) as these are not lacquer paints, but it happened only on the top of the right wing.
6 November 2018, 11:36
Łukasz Gliński
Pylons - done. I also selected the armament:
- 2*UB-16 (front coming from Italeri's Frogfoot, back from an old Mastercraft's weapons set)
- 8 bombs on 4-rack pylons (stolen from Bilek's Fitter).
In the meantime I'm working on the undercarriage and decalled the most of stuff, but still have to steal some stencils from other kits). 🙂
27 December 2018, 15:03
Cuajete
Well done, Łukasz 👍
28 December 2018, 13:25
Łukasz Gliński
Finished, my dear audience 🙂 Enjoy the pics. I'm aware of the fact that it's neither a stunner nor my best build, but the longest one for sure 😄 (I don't even remember when I started it)
Waiting for an injected Iryda (IBG? Arma? Are you reading this?)😉
I think I need a break from vacuform kits for some time now...😉
@Cuajete: Muchos gracias 🙂
1 January 2019, 13:17
Nathan Dempsey
Well done! Those vac kits can be difficult. Your kit came out great and the camo pattern is eye catching.
1 January 2019, 13:42
Jozef Goos
Nice color scheme
1 January 2019, 13:56
Alec K
Vacuform? You are brave! Nicely done 👍
1 January 2019, 14:20
Łukasz Gliński
Thank you guys. Vacuform, indeed, started long time ago in the 20th century😉
@Jozef: Thanks, that was the one&only camouflaged I-22 ever.
1 January 2019, 14:45
Maciej Bellos
Well done Lukasz! Happy New Year!!!
1 January 2019, 15:50

Nice model after a lot of hard work! 👍
1 January 2019, 16:44
Łukasz Gliński
Thank you for your enthusiastic comments, much appreciated 🙂
It was a long and hard work indeed.
1 January 2019, 18:03
Cuajete
Hard work. Well done, Łukasz. Congrats!
1 January 2019, 19:27
Guy Rump
Very impressive 🙂
1 January 2019, 20:51
Bart Goesaert
Splendid result and beautiful camo. Glad to following this build.
1 January 2019, 22:00
Łukasz Gliński
Thank you folks. Bart, your support was very helpful while I was struggling with the canopy forming, thanks once again! 🙂
2 January 2019, 11:09
Bart Goesaert
my pleasure
2 January 2019, 12:34
Wim van der Luijt
Your hard work paid off.....really nice model!
2 January 2019, 12:42
Alexander Grivonev
That is indeed a terriffic result. Considering it is a vacu kit even more!
"started long time ago in the 20th century" Haha, wow 😄
2 January 2019, 18:08
Łukasz Gliński
Thank you, I appreciate that, it was a really long way.
2 January 2019, 18:24
Erik De Smet
Very nice result, Lukasz, certainly for a vacform; but do you know Murphy's modelers law ? Once you have built a vac form, the resin version will become available 🙂
2 January 2019, 19:18
Łukasz Gliński
Thx Erik, usually it happens when I start building something. But I hope your forecast will come true 🙂
2 January 2019, 19:29
Bart Goesaert
Well, you know what they say... when you spent a large amount on the resin model, a plastic model will appear on the horizon...
3 January 2019, 12:27
Łukasz Gliński
True story (of my single seat Gnat by Aeropoxy)😉
3 January 2019, 12:39
Ben M
Great build, and it could not have been more of a challenge!
3 January 2019, 14:31
Bernhard Pethe
Not everyone builds, such a model. I like it. 👍 Is there still no injection molding model?
3 January 2019, 16:34
Łukasz Gliński
Thank you. Nope, nobody makes neither injection nor a resin one unfortunately. It's a niche - couple of such planes built, used only 11 years, then written off.
3 January 2019, 17:04
Bart Goesaert
There are models of aircraft with fewer made and shorter lifespans then this one. So not all hope is lost...
3 January 2019, 17:21
Saeed Ezadi
Congratiulation, breathtaking build😉
4 January 2019, 01:55
Łukasz Gliński
Thanks Saeed, but I have to admit I would do it different way today😉 (is it called learning?)
4 January 2019, 08:58
Ekki
Great result. Wonderful camo scheme, 👍
7 January 2019, 21:59
Łukasz Gliński
Thanks Ekki, glad you like it 🙂

Album info

Vacuform by Marfix, the sole available I-22 in 1/72. Second ever vacu attempt, first - P-39 flew into the trashbin v.quickly, it was like 15 yrs ago. This time I'm gonna be more patient. The idea is to finish it in the SP-PWE markings.
