Porsche 964 RS 3.8 WIP

quite some seams on the body
blinker and air intakes formed to fit properly
The original has two protruding "lips" on the front bumper..
..which are missing in the kit...
...so i built them from scratch
the kit headlights do not look very good, i had a pair of spare ones from Tamiyas 911 turbo kit, after some sanding they seem to fit pretty good
the wheels from the kit look pretty good, the problem is that on the rear wheel the rim bed is too shallow, the center piece must be deeper
here also, kit part vs. aftermarket. No contest...

i am very pleased with the result!!
5 hours of work...fitting aftermarket wheels is quite a headache! Some scratchbuilding, cursing and several bottles of beer were required😛
Let's do some body work! This gap is not supposed to be there..
quite a few sink marks on the rear wing
the original wing is a big, solid block, so this gap has also to go
nothing incurable, you just need the right amount of putty!
this will pe a pain in the a$$ to sand :/
thanks to 2k polyester putty it is dry after just 30 mins!
I actually tried something different this time, i added some polyester resin to the putty to make it softer and better moldable and what do you know...it works!
i am very pleased with the result so far. I need to do another go with the putty here and there but i think it's gonna be good.

The rims look promising! I used Model Master Aluminium..
there is no full engine replica in this kit, all the details are cast-on on the chassis, nothing you can't solve with some paint and a little dry brushing...

time for some filler-primer, at this stage it is necessary to use some thick product because there are some small holes and air bubbles in the putty you can't prevent.
i use Revells Email Basic. It is a very good product, dries very fast and overall i made good experience with it
the window part is not a source of delight also, it is pretty thick and foggy. I keep the windshield, the side windows all will be made from scrath out of 0,2mm Polystyrol sheet
the rear window will also be replaced because there is a hole for the wiper which does not belong on there. Unfortunately you can's just seal it up with putty..

the bodywork is almost done, after smoothing out the filler primer, the basecoat is waiting
Happy New Year eveyone! Finally the bulk of holidays is over, time to return to the workbench!
After smoothing the filler-primer it is time for the basecoat. I use Tamiyas "Fine Surface Primer" White is the colour of choice because the yellow basepaint is not 100% opaque, grey primers would make the paint look dull
..speaking of the paint, it finally arrived! It is custom mixed Porsche Yellow by Lechler, the same brand which is used by Zero Paints. I will use this with a 2K Clearcote
After the basecoat is dried i smoothed the last scratches and irregularities with 2000 grid paper and rescribed some missing gaps on the body
i recreate some parts of the interior by using flocking powder. It looks messy yet, but wait for it!

there are some dust inclusions, but nothing you can't cure with some fine wet sanding and polishing
while the paint sets i worked on the interior, the flocking adds a very realistic touch to the model!
couldn't resist, was eager to know how the yellow would look with the rims..😄
verdict: amazing 😛. The paint still has to cure a few days before i can proceed with sanding and polishing..
..aaaand I screwed up :/ the sunroof does not belong on this version.
I am glad i noticed it at this stage and not when the model is almost finished!

The problem with painting a high gloss finish at home without a professional spray cabin, you will always end up with dust particles in your paint. Furthermore the clear gloss has sunken in after drying for a few days and all the solvents evaporated..
..so the next step is crucial to make your paint job look really good, smooth and shiny. I wet sanded the surface with 2000 grid paper and 4000 grid soft pad...
..and polished the surface with Tamiyas polishing compounds and a soft cotton cloth
It is tideous work...
..you have to take care at the edges, because the clear cote is very thin there..
..but in the end it is worth it!
Ok, some progress here. I had to repaint some areas because i was too eager with the polishing and polished right through to the basecoat! It took some time to repair it.
rubber and plastic parts or just black areas painted, the door, hood and other gaps darkened to obtain a more realistic look

Scott asked what i use for polishing. After finishing my tube of tamiyas (great) coarse polishing compound (again) i searched for some alternatives and this is what i use now. It is similar to Tamiyas product and at 28€ for 1KG(!) it is quite a bargain!

it looks like we are getting somewhere!

Features: Carrera RS 3.8 Conversion. Speedline Cup 18" rims, brake discs and saddles, scratch front spoiler, interior flocking, seatbelts, new side windows, mud flaps
I'll make a proper presentation in daylight to do the colour justice!

Spanjaardwhere do you buy that 3M product, looks interesting. they seem to have several others , but i have no idea what the differences are.... did you try others?

Alexander GrivonevHey Spanjaard, 3M has several products with different grades of "abrasiveness" (i hope this word exists) this particular one is the most abrasive and perfect for the first polishing step to get rid of the grinding marks from the wet sanding. For a fact, i tried several others but they were not abrasive enough for this crucial first step. But keep in mind i painted my model with a 2K clearcote which is pretty resistant and hard and this compound may be too coarse for other (1K) clear cotes. To get the surface even more shiny i used Tamiyas Finish compound (at this stage you could use any other "fine" compound). But as always in life, you should try yourself, draw your own conclusions and learn from your mistakes😢 cheers

Scott HastingsSpectacular!!! It actually looks BETTER than your reference photo. If you take her outside and do some forced perspective photography it will be hard to tell it is a scale model. Standing ovation!!!

Alexander GrivonevThanks ice! No it's not exactly the same Porsche though it is also from the 964 series and same colour. The one in the video is a "Turbo S", it has a different spoiler/hood and additional air inlets behind the doors. Mine is a "RS 3.8".
