Looks like you are good at armour as well Gary. I assume that you are first and foremost a plane nut like myself? If so, did you enjoy building the tanks? There are a few WWI tanks that I like, and I have been considering giving it a go, but I'm concerned that all those little wheels will drive me round the bend.

Thank you Gorby! Yes, I am mostly an aircraft builder; this is one of just two tanks I've done. They were a lot of fun and easier than 'planes in my opinion. I do have one other tank in my stash (M41 Walker Bulldog) and probably should give it a try next. I too would love to have a couple WWI tanks in my display...🙂

Oh armor, Gary? Looks great for a plane modler! This is Tamiyas Panther from the 70´th i guess? There is something with the tracks... But anyway, more heavy metal, please!;)

really nicely done. a good modeller is a good modeller no matter what subject he/she does. and you do it nicely no matter what the subject is 🙂

Thanks all! My two tanks models are the only models I've ever entered in a contest. The staff at Kings Hobby in Austin, Texas encouraged me to enter them in a model contest in Austin. It was mostly armor kits and there were some breathtaking examples there. Unbelievably to me, my Panther and my Italeri M24 Chaffee both placed third in their respective classes. How's that for beginner's luck?!? Thanks again my friends. 🙂

Hi Gary, your Panther looks great!👍
Just one comment: if you show it in an action situation you should apply at least some dirt and dust to the undercarriage.😉

Thank you Ulf! Yeah, I tried to toss some sand and dirt onto the tracks when I took the photos, but I guess it's not nearly enough to be really realistic. When I built the model, I never thought I would display it that way. I remember reading a quote from Tony Greenland regarding armor models. Paraphrasing, he said that he was building a replica of a vehicle, not the "terrain" it served in. 😉 His fine work was notable for his clean builds. I guess that attitude sort of stuck with me when I did my two tanks. On second thought, the tank maybe should've just been photographed indoors...🙂

Album info

Here are a few pics of one of my two armor models. This is the Tamiya Panther Pzkpfw. V Ausf. A in1/35 scale. These are the only two I’ve built so far and I think they are easier than aircraft. The nature of the beast allows one to hide glitches easier and there aren’t any damned canopies to deal with.

These pics were made out at my farm a few years ago. Please excuse my crude attempt to create a cool diorama base for them. I threw the base together in about 10 minutes or so, and it was really just an experiment I guess. I did manage to get a few photos that weren’t too bad. After I had taken about 5 pics the damned battery played out on the camera and I left the card table and base in the pasture and drove back to town to recharge. When I returned a couple hours later, some calves had over-turned the table and messed it up and I had to start over, lol.

I did add a few scratch-built details such as the Schurzen plates and mounting hangers on the Panther, jack block on the Panther, the tarps on both tanks, t
