DONE !! CASA CN-235

Album image #1

Album image #2
Album image #3
The content of the box - Vacuformed sheets. That's new to me. I am curious how this one turns out.

Album image #4
Let the show begin.....defining the "parts end" with permanent marker.

Album image #5
Getting closer to the edge with a scissor.

Album image #6
And even more closer with a real sharp scalpel blade.

Album image #7
Scisor and blade exercise is important - because now it starts with sanding. Sanding. Sanding,...

Album image #8
After some time you see the marker shining through...slower and carefully now continuing with a higher grade of sanding paper.

Album image #9
at the end...a small burr get loose from the part. Done. 🙂
how many parts are in the box...um? Ok. See you in a few weeks - have to go sanding

Album image #10
Okay...well. When putting all those sanded parts together in a trial fit it seems that at the end an aircraft turns out - indeed.

Album image #11
So to get to this point it took some effort...some couple weeks for seperating all the components from the sheet.

Album image #12
The formed parts - and especially the fuselage - is extremely thin. I try to give a lot of support to make it stable and rigid.

Album image #13
Joining the wobbling edge seems a tricky exercise. Try to reduce the effort by support of wooden wedges.

Album image #14
Carving and sanding it in shape is done quick - compared to the plastic sanding of the last weeks 🙂

Album image #15
Album image #16
Some more ribs and frames to make the hull robust.

Album image #17
The front wheel comes in 2 halfes and they should be glued to the gear on 2 small surfaces - a butt joint I hardly trust. So a practicable joint to fix the gear strut and the tyre is not there - Therefore I drilled a hole here....

Album image #18
...and here. A brass tube will allow to join the wheel and the forward landing gear.

Album image #19
After trimming the axle the wheel should slip on easy and I expect that this front wheel assy is now more stable than before.

Album image #20
Details from a CASA 235 nose landing gear.

Album image #21
Album image #22
Album image #23
Album image #24
Scratched struts are on as well as forward lights.

Album image #25
Some wiring here...

Album image #26
...some wiring there.

Album image #27
mmh ... seems ok. Now let's see what we can do with the doors.

Album image #28
The part on the very right of the green sprue is the nose landing gear door. Having seen some reference pictures, I decided to go with the cut-away from the vacu sheet. The doors are usually sandwich composite parts. To imitate the "core -appearance" I will scratch them with styrene...

Album image #29
The real door hinges are goose-necked to support a quick opening by less movement of the strut - some remains from old PE will do....

Album image #30
My "composite doors" with hinges.....

Album image #31
...undergo some dry fit...

Album image #32
The arm lever for the opening mechanism on this CASA is pretty keen.

Album image #33
Another dry fit with actuator struts attached,...

Album image #34
Seems to work, position and angle are not quite right yet, but can be adjusted.

Album image #35
Precautions to avoid tailsitting. I put some lead in radom and cockpit.

Album image #36
The attachment of the tail cone is challenging. The thing is thin and wobbeling - but it should be rigid and strong as is should carry the vertical and horizontal stabilizers afterwards.
I hope this section is consolidated now with my balsa wood construction.

Album image #37
The idea was to add some guidance for the joints and to bring together the 2 halfes as consise as possible.

Album image #38
With that flush fitting it should work out pretty well (I hope.)

Album image #39
Next issue - fitting the horizontal fins. To support the joint and to assure the correct angle I built in an flat beam of wood.

Album image #40
I did the same on the vertical tail fin.

Album image #41
A view at the wooden "tail wing box".

Album image #42
Trial fit #999. I'm still quite doubtful that all this comes out well at the end...

Album image #43
The tail cone with all the rudders attached.....

Album image #44
2x Engine Cowling. I decided to open up the Air Intakes, the NACAs on both sides of the hoods and the Exhausts.

Album image #45
I used some styrene sheet to scratch the "channel" from the intake to the Engine.

Album image #46
Now it is better, because you can't no longer look through the cowling onto the naked Wing 😉
Also the NACAs are cutted "open" now.

Album image #47
Opening the holes for the Exhaust.

Album image #48
...and inserting some bended thin metal sheet to creat my "new" exhausts.

Album image #49
Album image #50
Album image #51
And I did some re-scribing to pronouce the panel lines which are "gone" in the Vaccu forming process respectively by my sanding operations.

Album image #52
Another trial assembly showed that some more front-weight is needed before I close the fuselage halfs. So some more lead balls placed to avoid tailsitting.

Album image #53
Finally I have joint the two halfes of the fuselage and the tail section....

Album image #54
...alot of sprue goo and filler was needed to make a smooth transition of the joint.

Album image #55
The size and position of the doors do not match with the version I need. Interessing that they are correct in size but in a switched location.

Album image #56
Same with the windows,... I need 1 more and the whole pattern slightly shifted to the rear.
So all the engravings for doors and windows will be filled with liquide sprue and sanded over. ...I hate scribing but beside that, some panel lines are gone also and need to be recovered,...

Album image #57
So here are some pic's of my scribing activities,....

Album image #58
Checking size respectively position of the cargo & pax doors,....

Album image #59
Scribing result on LH side......

Album image #60
...and also RH and underside done.

Album image #61
Here I have already fixed the vertical and horzontal stabilzers onto the fuselage.

Album image #62
The quality of the moulded parts is ...not the best. Some more sanding is needed to get those parts in shape.

Album image #63
Similar to the front landing gear I decided to "support" also the main landing gear with some metal tubes in order to hold the load of the entire kit without breaking wheels loose later on (there is pretty load of lead in the nose part).

Album image #64
Mainlanding gear ready for paint and assembly.

Album image #65
Painting and Assembly done.

Album image #66
Adjusting the landing gear within the bin is quite tricky. No marks or stops are given. A slight movement respectively a slight missmatch between left hand and right hand gear and the whole thing seems to come out of balance - as the span of the wings is intensifying any tiny misalignment. Leveled it out with ruler, blueTack and time...

Album image #67
Made my own stops and after several attempts I found it ok to use glue. Picture comparision showed later that the whole assembly should protrude slightly more - but too late now.
I started a time consuming masking session to protect the main landing gear from next coming (sanding) operations. 😉

Album image #68
When closing the Wheel Bin alot of putty was needed in order to close rather huge gaps.

Album image #69
Bottom view after filling & sanding that area.

Album image #70
Side view after fitting the wheel bay to the fuselage.

Album image #71
Mounting the wing to the fuselage started....

Album image #72
Wooden stiffener for the upper wing middle section.

Album image #73
Liquide sprue and Tamyia putty as a gab filler used here and also for...

Album image #74
....adjusting the outer wing panels. Gravity, ruler and protractor are used to level out the wings during glueing and curing to get the sightly upwards position of the wing tips.

Album image #75
Now I have added the engines and the flap track fairings. Putting on some primer is coming closer,....

Album image #76
So the first layer of primer is there. Quite surprising - It looked not that bad.....

Album image #77
....there where only a few minor imperfections that need some filling/sanding and repaint.

Album image #78
I started with aircraft grey to bring some depth effect to the surface...

Album image #79
...more spraying...

Album image #80
...this is my third model where I try black basing/marbeling...quite tough to decide when it is enough...

Album image #81
A thin layer of blueish grey comes as a final coat.

Album image #82
The black anti-icing panels are next,...

Album image #83
Anti iceing panels and the underwing exhaust plume section done.

Album image #84
Unfortunatly I had a bad surface preperation and on the HTP the demasking caused some damage.

Album image #85
Starting the recovery....

Album image #86
Aircraft grey...

Album image #87
...plus some blueish grey on top.

Album image #88
Done. Gloss coat next and then ready for the decals,.....

Album image #89
First session of decaling done...

Album image #90
All decals on and sealed with a coat of gloss acrylics.

Album image #91
After some days of gloss coat cure, I did a very decent oil wash, as the marbeling effect already shows a quite worne out surface.

Album image #92
Giving the propeller blades a first layer of black.

Album image #93
Preparing the antenna.

Album image #94
The installed antenna on the RH side of the vertical fin.

Album image #95
Nose landing gear and bay doors installed.

Album image #96
Underwing section ist done - some minor touch-ups to cover painting flaws were needed

Album image #97
Assembly of the propeller blades.

Album image #98
Yeep. The last "unclued" components...Now...quite busy actually, but I think I need to finish this build this weekend. 🙂 😉

Juergen Klinglhuber
Chris - I just check out your ATR 72. Great result. Luckely I can skip interior work. But I see already troubles coming along with engine cowling and wheel bay - similar to your ATR kit. This portion of work will become pretty challenging.
5 December 2020, 20:17
Juergen Klinglhuber
David - fingers crossed that this one will not end the same way - but the more I progress the more I understand why this happend 🙂

Have you considered filling the parts, so they get stiff? Like here:

Juergen Klinglhuber
Hi Lukasz - welcome 😉
21 January 2021, 20:23
Juergen Klinglhuber
and...OMG! potez452's documation is great.
and...YES. I thought about filling them. But I was not sure what material will make it stiff but not too heavy. As my Tamiya putty was eating away the styrene in the areas where i used it to support the bulkheads that I put into my craft ...I gave up this idea. I will check what potez452 use, may quite useful for the wings...THANKS
21 January 2021, 20:30
Juergen Klinglhuber
Was able to work a bit on the landing gears. Don't ask me details,...... 🙁

23 February 2021, 17:19
Juergen Klinglhuber
@Lukasz:
wingspan 35,5[cm]
lenght 29[cm]
beside my PBY Catalina build (modellversium.de/gal..atalina-academy.html) this one is the biggest plane in my collection by now (I am mainly in 72 scale).
But an C130 Hercules & a Dornier JII Wal is in my stash too.

Hi @all - many thanks for your kind words. It was fun to make experience with vaccu technique. Not sure if this was my first & last attempt....
@Dietmar & Harry - The bird will be there and I am looking forward for the exhibition too. After the Covid break it will be good to meet some mates and checking how productive they have been in the last 2 years. Hope the current figures will not spoil it at the end. Fingers crossed.
