Something to scare you? I have here the somewhat ruined looking surface of Italeri's Cessna 172! But the only purpose of this is to get rid of the far too deep panel lines as well as to tame/get rid of the too big and wild rivets at the same time!

Going to do the diorama of Red Square? 😉

Thank you for your interest! Indeed, that's definitely a good idea; I'm not a diorama builder, but maybe I'll get something attractive together as a photo background in the matter. Thanks for the suggestion,
I have one question: Mr. Rust seems to have installed additional tanks behind the seats: do any of you have an idea what these might have looked like?

Extra fuel was carried internally in tanks located at the wingtips and/or the baggage compartment: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_172

In case you missed this article it describes what he had with him: smithsonianmag.com/a..athias-rust-7101888/

Those items were most likely to be in the cabin, stowed on the seats or on the floor. Hope this info helps.

Helpful tips, thank you for the links! On the videos from "Red Square" I think I can see quite clearly that the backrests of the rear two seats are indeed missing. I will do the same with my model and at least not install the backs of the seats.

Not my scale, but one of my fav topics 👍
You won't fool us you're not dio builder once we've seen your Saunders-Roe 😛

Łukasz, those are very kind words, thank you!
A first adventure had to be survived with the windows: although these were to be inserted from the outside, they would easily fall inside through the almost equally large window openings. I didn't want to take that risk - besides, how could they be glued in without leaving glue marks?
I decided on the following solution: masking tape was applied to both sides of the windows and the window shape was cut to fit exactly. Protected from both sides, they were cemented in place with Revell's Clear Fix. Now we will see whether this made sense!

A tremendous amount of weight will be needed to keep the Cessna 172 from showing itself as a tailwheel aircraft- this amount of lead pellets from a "Liquid Weight" bottle might just be enough, as has already been shown! The globules have been embedded in a mass of liquid glue; a very useful method which I am sure I have not used here for the last time!

This is the current condition of Rust's Cessna. This means: everything is cleaned up and ready for a light preshading before "white over all" will prepare the application of the large decals.

Looking good Roland! If no diorama of Red Square, maybe an aerial scene in which a MiG-23 is trying unsuccessfully to stay in formation with Mr. Rust, ha!

Thank you mates, inspiring words! Yes, Mr. Rust's action forced many a Soviet officer into an extremely rough landing, from what one hears about Gorbachev's subsequent reprimands.

"Rust has landed!" Well, it went faster than I thought: today Rust's Cessna 172 is finished, a few pictures document the final state. But I have to say that this model is also far from "perfection". The parts have shown me the limits of my improvisation ability, but also of the repair-motivation. Filling the far too deep panel lines was just as indispensable as sanding the exaggerated rivets. I am a little proud of the filling of the windows, as the kit is really in a bad way there.....
I replaced the antennas and redid the ones at the rear, otherwise I'll leave it at that and end my excursion into the collective memory around the end of the Cold War with these pictures.

That was fast Roland! Speed and quality go together in Roland's builds!

Well done!

On a side note, the T-41D Mescalero (military version of the 172) was the aircraft that all pilots of the Hellenic Air Force got their wings since 1969. It was succeeded by the Tecnam P2002-JF.

Wow, I thank you very much for the encouraging and motivating feedback!
Indeed, a rather quick build - and one that has taught me that civilian themes can have a great appeal; well... certainly with a different kit in the future! Danke für Euren zuspruch!
