Revell 79 in different shades for the grey

Album image #15
And Tamiya XF-69 in different shades for the black

Album image #16
Why should you need work gloves for modelling?

Album image #17
...because you need the leather!

Album image #18
The leather is great to simulate sheepskin.

Album image #19
After everything is painted I started to add the coloured pe-parts.

Album image #20
Seats are ready!

Album image #21
I added some cables next to the pedals.

Album image #22
Let's call it a day.

Album image #23
I tried a new technique. First I sprayed a random pattern...

Album image #24
...and then covered it with a thin layer of paint. You can still guess the pattern under this layer.

Album image #25
And there is the anti skid covering.

Album image #26
These parts received some future to prepare for the wash.

Album image #27
And the overhead console in the cockpit is done.

Album image #28
Dirrrrrrty!

Album image #29
The passengers left some souveniers.

Album image #30
Perhaps I should grab my dyson before closing the fuselage.

Album image #35
Christmas riddle: What is this going to be?

Album image #36
Any idea?

Album image #37
It has to do with one of the rotors but isn't a part of it!

Album image #38
Comparison: Revell vs. Airfix

Album image #39
Airfix Tailrotor side view

Album image #40
Troopseats from Revell

Album image #42
Tail needs some holes.

Album image #43
First drilling small holes in the corners and then carve out the rest

Album image #44
Testfit of the hinge -it's dark in that tail

Album image #45
I added some styrene as base for the intermediate gearbox

Album image #46
worked on the hinge and sanded down the pins in the tail

Album image #47
I "perforated" the hinge a little bit.

Album image #48
Naaa! - 0,3mm is too thick!

Album image #49
0,1mm is better.

Album image #50
Grabbed some pe from the leftovers

Album image #51
Raw version of the intermediate gearbox

Album image #52
You can barely see it, but it's there

Album image #53

Album image #59
Glued in new position but it wasn't strong enough.

Album image #60
Bt this is, what it should look like.

Album image #61
Disassembled again and I started drilling holes...

Album image #62
...for this.

Album image #63
Now it's strong enough.

Album image #64
Added some pe-parts

Album image #65
Any guess what this could be?

Album image #66
It holds the tailrotorblades in position, when the helicopter is on the ground.

Album image #67
painted the intermediate gearbox and the tailrotor transmission shaft.

Album image #68
For the soundproofing I used thin bags for sandwiches.

Album image #69
They were glued in place with white glue and the windows were cut out

Album image #70
For the upper panels I used thin styrene

Album image #71
Those panels were riveted and scribed

Album image #72
Let's start painting. Revell 79 is the colour of choice.

Album image #73
I used a slightly lighter shade for the softer part of the soundproofing.

Album image #74
I like the wrinkles.

Album image #75
This is what you see though the front door...

Album image #76
...and this is, what you see through the sliding door.

Album image #77
Clear cote for the cabin and I started...

Album image #78

Album image #83
Replaced the support poles. Left: before - right: after.

Album image #84

Album image #85
Revell troopseats with Eduard pe.

Album image #86
I forgot to close the window behind the sliding door.

Album image #87
Luckily it wasn't too late.

Album image #88
This is what the folded seats look like.

Album image #89

Album image #105
Added some first aid packs and the first intercom cable

Album image #106

Album image #107
German Sea King - the cussions are different but the frame is similar.

Album image #108
So first lets get rid of those fat legs...

Album image #109
...and start adding some wire (0.3 mm).

Album image #110
Frame is done.

Album image #111
Next step is painting and adding the seatbelts.

Album image #112
Seat has been painted and I added some seatbelts. Window was glued in and some othe minor works took a lot of time.

Album image #113
I think this has something to do with the heating?

Album image #114
Added the roof, some cables, the heating pipes, the lever next to the main door.

Album image #115
Cabin Interior is done!

Album image #116
Painted the heating pipes.

Album image #117
Windows in place and seats glued to the wall.

Album image #118
The fuselage is closed.

Album image #119
Quite a few gaps in places that won't be nice to fill and sand.

Album image #120
This will be a difficult one.

Album image #121
There's no gap on the real helicopter so I hope I can make it disappear.

Album image #122
And this won't be funny too.

Album image #123
Windows tinted with a mix of Tamiya clear blue (75%) and clear green (25%).

Album image #124
Overhead console was completed with some frames.

Album image #125
scratchbuilt overhead circuit breaker panels...

..the Airfix Sea King.

Album image #131
Stabilizer was completely naked before.

Album image #132
Testing the colours.

Album image #133

Album image #135
Masking wa done with Tamiya tape.

Album image #136
Hard edges are needed.

Album image #137
Riveting on the main fuselage is done.

Album image #138
I gave it a coat of Tamiya XF-1 to find imperfections.

Album image #139
...and found no big issues. So I started with more pe-parts.

Album image #140
Eduard provides a lot of them...

Album image #141
...but not all withstand a comparison with reference pictures.

Album image #142
Quite busy nose-section.

Album image #143
I call it a day.

Album image #144
Folding time...

Album image #145
Pepping up the rotor head a bit.

Album image #146
Left: modified - right: Airfix.

Album image #147
Printed the plan in 1/72 and used it a a template for the masks.

Album image #148
First mask in place

Album image #149
Using Tamiya tape and masking tape for curves.

Album image #150
Right side almost done...

Album image #151
The first roll of Tamiya tape is empty...

Album image #152
...and I'm 80% done.

Album image #153
For the tricky bit's I'll use UHU Tac.

Album image #154
I'm so looking forward ending this #%§$&!

Album image #155
Rien ne va plus...

Album image #156
Quite happy with the result.

Album image #157
Not too much paint bleeded under the masks.

Album image #158
Underside

Album image #159
Front and doors.

Album image #160
Instead of decals...

Album image #161
...I preferred to use...

Album image #162
...masks and airbrush to create the black areas.

Album image #163
Clearcote and first decals applied.

Album image #164
Decals done, gloss cote done and washing done.

Album image #165
Washing was done in the areas affected from the exhausts. The front isnt washed at all.

Album image #166
Steps.

Album image #167
Tail rotor with - I don't know the word. It prevents the rotorblades from moving araound.

Album image #168
Mask off!

Album image #169
I used Xtracrylix Flat Varnish.

Album image #170
The maskol reacted with the future coat on the windows - I have to touch this up.

Album image #171
Tailrotor is not glued on yet.

Album image #172
This is where the Mascol reacted with the Future.

Album image #173
Problem solved!

Album image #174
Needs many small parts like whipers, pitot tubes etc...

Album image #175
First testfit of the rotor.

Album image #176
Rotorblades on the sides are a little too high.

Album image #177
Front door open.

Album image #178
The Cargohook wasn't easy to research. I decided to build something that looks like a SACRU 1.

Album image #179
Let's hook something up!

Album image #180
The hook is in its stowed away position. I added the thin wire to the inside of the cabin.

Album image #181
I don't know why Airfix forgot the Antennas besides the cockpit but ZF115 definitely has them. I also added the "lights" on the sponsons.

Album image #182
Started "tuning" and painting the rotorblades

Album image #183
Tailrotor now has silver tips.

Album image #184
Howto spray five similar bladetips yellow.

Album image #185
With the template it was easy to mask the rotorblades.

Album image #186
What you don't want to see after removing the masking tape...

Album image #187
Underside

Album image #188
Topside - leading edge received a cote in Revell 91 Iron.

Album image #189
Testshot for the alignment of the rotorblades.

Album image #190
I had to cut the rotorblades on the sides two times to get the angles right.

Album image #191
One tip is a little bit too high but that will be corrected.

Album image #192
Next steps rotorhead, etc.

Album image #203
All lines and cables are in place.

Album image #204
Some paint still needed but main work on the rotorhead is done.

Album image #206
Rotorhead is done troo and the front door is complete.

Awesome job so far.
20 December 2016, 18:03

I don't like the Airfix troopseats. They don't look like canvas - more like solid material. I made a "ladder" from plastic-rod and then made a seating surface from aluminum.
And it was time for some pe-banding. Sandfilter and front door are ready.
22 December 2016, 15:04
Holger Kranich
And both Looks great so far! Do you plan to Display the front door open?
22 December 2016, 15:30
ice
Yes, of course. Otherwise I wouldn't need the pe-door. When ready it will be folded with all doors opened. Just as did with my Merlin.
23 December 2016, 12:01

Did some work on the folding tail. It doesn't look like a big deal but it took some hours. Later a photoetched grid will be placed over the holes.

That interior looks prety awesome! I find your sandwich bag technic very interesting, I use green stuff to create the effect, but I will use yout method if in the end looks like I expect. Keep it up mate!

Thank you mates!
@Marc: That was my second idea but I'm not very good in sculpting surfaces.
@Burkhard: What I learned about modelling, I learned by myself. But even more i learned from other modellers in the internet. So I like WIP's that show how people solve problems ore create things and I hope I can give a back a little bit to other modellers by doing so.

This build is very much fun but your compliments give so much extra-motivation. Thank you all so much!

Only a small update today - Clear cote for the cabin (first time using Tamiya and not Future) and I started painting the tailrotor. The side walls with the clear cote on it look quite convincing.

Thank you mates!
Only small progress but I wanted to show, that the build isn't on hold. The upper part of the soundproofing got a light grey wash and I had to cut a little bit of it to make the fuselage halves fit together properly. I also had to loot THREE Revell Sea King-Kits to get all the benches. Most of the seats will be in folded position, so I don't have to scratchbuild to much of the undercarriage for the troopseats. I also painted the tailrotor a little bit more but there are some more layers to come.
15 January 2017, 15:40

¡Muchas gracias!
Sometimes it's better to follow the instructions. I totally forgot to close the sidewindow behind the sliding door. Luckily it wasn't too late. I also continued to work on the troopseats. That's a routine piece of work and takes quite a lot of time.

The folded troopseats are done and I made 2 fire extinguishers. For the troopseats I bought another Eduard pe-set. In case I destroy the windshield when removing the windshield wipers, I got me a 2nd kit. Better safe than sorry.

Today all of the time was used to get rid of the windscreen wipers. I don't know why the companies think it's a good idea to cast them right on the clear parts...

nice. like they were never there.... how did you polish it?
19 February 2017, 21:06

toothpaste? i would have never thought of that 🙂 i have to try that 🙂
20 February 2017, 19:34
Łukasz Gliński
I heard about that toothpaste trick many times, but never achieved acceptable results to be honest and turned toward gauzy agent instead - but your example is unbelievably transparent
20 February 2017, 19:46
Spanjaard
maybe it is a question of the right toothpaste ?😉 which one are you using Ice?
20 February 2017, 20:00
Marc A.
ice, Spanjaard Why do not you use the tamiya polishing paste?. Have you tried it?. its great stuff yo have it over the bench😉
20 February 2017, 20:25

Hi Marc, i have tamiya polishing products, but i think i did not get good results with it in transparent parts.....
20 February 2017, 20:33

Wow - so much nice feedback! I feel honored guys.
I used some cheap toothpaste from the local discounter. It's good to look out for some toothpaste with whitening effect, because it has more abrasive parts in it, I think.
The stuff for polishing handy displays should work too.
@Bart Meeldijk: Didn't think of that yet. If you have an idea, I would like to hear it. 🙂
Do you have any pics of your build?

Seahawk is done - Sea King is on the bench again. 🙂
I have to finish the interior so I made - I have not idea what it is but I saw it on reference pictures looks like some insulated pipes or something else. It was my first use of milliput. I also had to make some intercom cables from 0,1mm wire and first aid kits for hanging around at the walls.
29 October 2017, 21:18

Sunday - my "I don't have to rund day" and I finally got some time for the Sea King.
I added the first aid packs, the first intercom cable and the fire extinguishers. I tried to detail the seat in the back a little bit more but I don't know if I keep it that way. The legs look quite thick now.

Looking great, impressed with your work. I am a victim of "I will just touch this part up" and wind up redoing the whole kit. I made the entire internals of old 1/72 Airfix FAA Sea King just to give it some life as was completely void inside otherwise. One of my favourite model builds so far...it is in my projects. Cheers, Scott

Today the cabin was completed a little bit more. Some more intercom-cables, levers and pipes were glued in place and I start looking forward to the moment when I can close the Sea King.
Some of the gluepoints are quite small and have to hold quite some weight in place - I hope later nothing starts to move when the hull is closed.

Thank you Clifford!
The flu got me so I had to take a longer break. Today the fuselage was closed (using some brute force in some areas) and now I'm absolutely not looking forward to close all those little gaps. Advantage of the Airfix-Sea King: No rivets!
I think I'll try surfacer applied with a toothpick.
I also got rid of the tie-down rings on the fuselage. That was quite easy because of the soft Airfix-plastic.

I filled and sanded and filled and sanded but the results are not presentable yet.
So I went to the hobby shop and bought some Tamiya clear blue and clear green to tint the overhead windows. I used a mix of 75% blue + 25% green. I also added the overhead console and added two frames I saw at a lot of pictures.

Your internal detailing is amazing...the seats, wiring, ductwork and wall insulation ALL top notch. You need to do a cut open version to be able to see all this gorgeous work! I like the clear sharpness you got with your green mixture for the canopy window. Super build indeed

Some very nice gents at britmodeller gave me the hint, that the Mk.4 has some extra circuit breaker panels over the pilots and co-pilots head. Pictures are rare so I had to guess when i made some from styrene and leftover pe-parts.

I have to thank you so much for your comments and the support. It releases that little extra-energy you need to try something new and not stay on the same level all the time.
The new thing this time was Rosie. Rosie the Riveter was totally new to me but our relationship grew strong quite fast.😎
It's a marvelous tool and it adds so much details to the model. I used the 0.4mm-Version (single and double) and you could even use it for 1/144. Sadly the rivets are so close together that it's very hard to take a good photo of them. Damn I have to get a macro-lens soon.
17 February 2018, 20:19

You guys are sooo great! Thank you all for the very flattering comments. 🙂
@spanjaard: Give it a try - it's a great tool!
@olly: There are soo many gifted modellers here that I can learn so much from - I'm more the student than the teacher.

Today I was curious how much of the rivets would be visible after painting. As you can see this shouldn't be much of a problem. But I'll have to redo the painting of the tail because of other reason. If you take a look at photos of the real bird you'll see that the white is bright and shiny. No preshading needed: jetphotos.com/registration/ZF115

My next steps will be:
- completing the riveting and assembling the Sea King for painting
- No primer or black basing. I'll spray XF-62 as base coat (perhaps I'll light it up a little with XF-2 because of the scale effect)
- masking the tiger-stripes
- paint XF-2 with a good coverage

All the weathering will be done with washes, oil paint and highly dilluted airbrushing.

Ronan
Great progress, Ice😉
24 February 2018, 22:43

Thank you!
Riveting is done. I painted the fuselage with XF-1 to find issues but nothing world shaking apeared so I started with more pe-parts from the Eduard-set.
When you want to use this set I highly recommend to use reference pictures. Some pe parts are not useable on the HC,4.
Perhaps I can start with painting the camo scheme this week but I have a lot of appointments this week.

Looking very good... Is there another reason then to check the surface to paint it before the application of the PE? Doesn't this have consequences for the adhesion (bit like when masking a model and the paint comes off kind of style, but with the PE)?
6 March 2018, 07:32
ice
@Harry: Dankeschön! I hope they'll be still there after paint, clear cote, washing and all the other layers of stuff to come.

@Ed Froix: Thank you and welcome!

@Bart:
I hope not. 😄
I painted it because I needed to spot areas I had to sand. this is much less complicated without the PE.

Today more PE-time. Just compare the folded part to the kit-part. BUT Eduard did something wrong. The diagonal struts of the frames should be similar on both sides: The front strut should go from left top to right bottom on both sides. Not a big deal but they made a lot of small mistakes on that set. I'll have to mount the IR-thingies to make the struts invisible. 😄

@Gareth: So "Gust Lock" is that red thingy? Is this the official term? I alway wondered what could be the name for that device.
17 September 2018, 18:48
Gareth Windsor
Yes, gust lock. The tail rotors all flap independently so the Gust Lock would pull the blades and hold them in place to stop the wind knocking them back and forth and getting damaged.
17 September 2018, 21:08
Clifford Keesler
Excellent job Ice.

Thank you Gareth for the explanation. I've seen the Gust Lock many times and I knew it's purpose but I never knew the name. 🙂
And thank you Clifford for the appreciation.

Today a big step was done. I apllied the flat varnish and finally was able to peel the masks off. That's what I like best in modelling. It's a bit like Christmas.

Firts testfit of the main rotor. I like the Airfix-system - nothing is glued yet. The outer rotorblades are a bit too high but that's not a big issue.

The whole time today went into the cargo hook. After some research I found a company called Drallim that seems to deliver helicopter cargo hooks to the British Forces. I tried to build the SACRU 1. It's not painted yet but that should do the job. I also still needs the cables that open the hook and the hook needs to be tied up against the bottom of the helicopter.

4 October 2018, 12:43
ice
Thank you Clifford and Gareth. So great to know, that even Pros like my model. 🙂
A productive weekend ends:
- added many antennas (you can hardly see the wire HF antenna)
- added the "floodlights" to the sponsons. I think they are an obstacle avoidance system.
- clearcoted and washed wheels, front door, holders for the IR jammers, tailhinge, steps of the side door.
- painted the SACRU and stowed it under the helicopter. I also added the thin cable, that exits the cabin under the left side window and runs down to the hook to hold it in position
- I don't know why, but Airfix forgot the antennas on the left and right side of the cockpit that look like handles. I added tham but they are not painted yet.
- all rotorblades now have locks and are a bit "tuned". Hydraulik lines will be added later.
- Rotorblades are painted Medium Sea Grey (underside) and Dark Sea Grey (upper side)

That's it for today. 🙂

Not much but it took some time:
- painting rotorblades topside RAF Dark Sea Grey
- masking topside
- painting rotorblades underside RAF Medium Sea Grey
- masking the tips for the yellow with a template
- painting the tips Revell 15 Yellow
- masking the leading edges of the rotorblades with a template (leading edge isn't silverish up to the root of the rotorblade)
- painting the leading edges Revell 91 Iron
- painting the rotorblades with X22 for the decals

The rotorblades are painted, washed and coated. Now I had to allign them. Airfix did a good job but the rotorblades on the sides were too high and too horizontal. I had to make two cuts to get them right. The droop was made by sticking them in hot water and bend them ove a template.

@Olivier: the latter IMO - look at the pic 199 caption: "Too small for my camera.". Looks like ice went beyond the capabilities of his own equipment 😄

So many nice comments - guys you are the best. 👍
Work is over for this year and that means I have some time for the hobby. Yesterday and today I nearly finished the rotorhead. It still needs some touch ups with paint but the main work is done. I have to say that I really love the Sea king in all its variants but building the rotorhead is quite a challenge...

All of your comments were very nice and I'm really thankful for them but Bart made me laugh out loud. You made my day! 👍

Today again some hours went into the model but you can't see the big differeces. I completed the rotorhead and glued the front door in place.
I also completed the underside of the Sea King were some antennas and the anti-collision light were still missing. Since I lost the kit part (that wasn't looking that good at all) I made a new anti-collision light - twice! Why twice? Well the first one was declared a gift to the modelling gods when it jumped out my tweezers and wasn't seen ever again. Did you know that carpet monsters even live in laminate floors?

The to do list is getting shorter:
- new pitot tubes (you just can't use the kit parts)
- winch
- windscreen whipers
- some more lights
- antennas on the tail boom

I hope I didn't forget anything...

Bernhard, dass du und dein UH-34 daran nicht ganz unschuldig seid, ist dir schon klar, oder?😉
Als ich den im FF gesehen hab, und dann noch den Rotorkopf vom Mojave, da hat das wohl was ausgelöst.

@Ronan: ...says the builder of beautiful models. Thank you so much! 🙂

@Kon_Bar, Łukasz and Zsolt: Perhaps someone should invent some anti-carpet-moster-spray or something like that. 😄

Okay @ice, das freut mich und wenn es solche Früchte wie bei Dir trägt, dann ist mir um die Zukunft nicht bange. 🙂

23 December 2018, 11:02
ice
Thank you Marc and Spanjaard! 🙂
Spanjaard, there's still enough work left to do:

- antennas on the sides of the tailboom (both sides)
- positionslights
- holdingbar under the winch
- small antenna on the left side on the cockpit
- rearview mirrors
- antenna in the windscreen
- small handles on the doghouse
- static dischargers
- filler cap beside the backdoor
- openings for fire extinguisher on the doghouse
- pe-parts on the sandfilter

and for presentation there will be some small add-ons
- lashing of the outer rotorblades
- tarp over the sandfilter
- cover for small antenna on the left cockpitside
- cover pitot tubes
- exhaus covers
- wheelchocks

Thank you very much Ingmar Donald, Clifford and Tim. Great comments!
@Donald: Nope - I do this just for fun. But thank you, that you think my build could be worthy. 🙂

- antennas on the sides of the tailboom (both sides): CHECK!
- pe-parts on the sandfilter: CHECK
- holdingbar under the winch: Made from wire and painted but not glued to the Sea King yet.

- lashing of the outer rotorblades: Nearly done. I already made tip socks from aluminium foil and Tamiya tape but they still need some paint.
- tarp over the sandfilter: I made a cover from aluminium foil but that's not quite the look I want to achieve. other colour is needed too.
- exhaust covers: Still need paint

@Daniel: *brrrrrrrr* 😄

- sandfilter cover is done
- ehaust covers are done
- tip socks are done
- handles on the doghouse are done (need those to lash the exhaust covers)

A very nice model, Ice . In fact i wanted to start my HC.4 when you decided to do yours, so i choose another helo😉 ( Dauphin ) , it's a very good source of inspiration for me now ... I would make the old HC.4 in Bosnia 1994 but i don't know when 😄

Thank you Ronan. You want to do the SFOR-Version?
28 December 2018, 16:32

yes the SFOR- version. Maybe i will make the very late HC.4 first ( with FLIR )

Last update this year!
I made some small rearview mirrors. They are hard to see but they are there - believe me! 😄
The exhaust covers are also secured and I tried to secure the outer rotorblades. A little bit sad that it won't be finished this year but I don't want to rush it now ob tne last mile.

ice
Thank you Cuajete and Richmond! 🙂

I call this build done! Today I added the last little missing parts like
- positionlights on the sponsons made from clear sprue
- small "PIN OUT"-sign for the tailhinge
- cover for the ice-indicator with a little RBF-tag
- wheelchocks
- new sideantenna using thicker rigging-wire
- new antenna in the center of the windscreen
- and I secured the outer rotorblades

I think I'll make a small base for the Sea King and will take better pictures for the "roll out" when the sun comes out again.

I saw it today, sure looks nice. Hope it does not cost an arm and a leg. Lol. I just recentely got my first Hasegawa Sea King and I have been modeling since I was 8 years old, of course I took about a 15 year break.

I think Genesis models said it will be about 54 Pounds, so I will have to see what that will be in U.S. dollars. I will get one, one way or another.
