Star Wars Episode I Trade Federation Vulture Droids

Album image #1
A nice win from EBay.. A real bargain.

Album image #2
Ah, the joy of unboxing a vintage model kit... Mmm.. Smells just like 1999!

Album image #3
Few parts, nice details, pure enjoyment. The lettering on the base though..

Album image #4
Although it’s a Snapfast, it still needs filler, glue, and sanding. Notice the nice raised panel lines.

Album image #5
Dry fitting the squadron.. needs a Naboo Starfighter firing upon it.. On order..

Album image #6
Embossed lettering on a dome base, hmm

Album image #7
I did not use any primer.

Album image #8
I think I matched the colors from the box art pretty well.. It’s basically a washed out Olive drab, and shading the base color of the plastic..

Album image #10
I want the eyes to glow.. white base, fluorescent pink, followed by a red wash for tint.. however, I’ve never been successful with complex masking jobs like this..

Album image #11
Sealing the tape with flat clear.

Album image #12
Black base for dry brushing later.

Album image #13
So far, so good..The black areas will be dry brushed silver, followed by different colored washes.

Album image #14
More masking..

Album image #15
Vallejo Air black.

Album image #16
I know I have laid the paint on too thick..

Album image #17
As I suspected, had some trouble with the eyes. Too much paint caused a tiny ridge to form. After the tape was removed. Not sure if I can live with this or not. If I redo the eyes, I’ll have to redo the body also.

Album image #18
All the ducks in a row.

Album image #19
Yeah, that was satisfying..

Album image #20
I’m pretty happy with how they look. I need lots more practice with masking..

Album image #21
Imagine a Naboo Star fighter in firing position..

Album image #22
Still a WIP..

Album image #23
Added some dry brushed silver. Calling it completed.

A very enjoyable build, that I won off EBay. I really like the multi-kit sets. The details of the AMT snapfast kits are surprisingly nice, with lots of detail and raised panels.
I'm wondering how to paint the embossed lettering on the base, any ideas?

I remember to build this kit in the past, it was funny. Like to see you have build it yet. Maybe you can use a Mascot around the lettering and try a kind of drybrushing

That was my first thought too Torsten, using liquid mask around the letters and dry brushing.. I saw another guy doing a dabbing technique like how they used to apply ink to the type set in old printing presses.. both worth a try.

Yes, the second one sounds interesting, too. Like to see which technique you use

Made some progress.. I'm happy with the results so far, although I feel a disturbance in the Force.. as if my masking job is about to betray me, and go horribly wrong...

I'm looking forward to see the pink zone without masking 🙂

As I suspected, the eyes gave me trouble. Paint was too thick, causing tiny ridges around the edges after the tape was removed. Not sure if I can live with it or not. I may redo them. Next after some dry brushing, there are additional racing stripes and battle damage I have yet to figure out.
