David, it's been a while, but here we go!
Here, a two-storey interior is created at once: Merit's Grumman Duck would be a bit empty from the kit alone, but Eduard thankfully provides a remedy. In order not to hide all this under the closed kit cockpit, I have procured a vacu-formed version, which I would like to show fully open.

Everything closed, now a little filling and a lot of sanding. Fortunately, not everything has disappeared into the invisibility of the two hull shells: two cellar windows give a little insight into the "coal cellar".

I've had no idea that Duck was so "inhabited" insides - following with fascination!

Always fancied doing a Duck but was never in FAA service really so I will be watching this one Roland.

a beautiful kit that you present to us how can the kit be built? Roland I am also considering buying it.

Hi Christian, Merit's moulds are a pure delight; I can only recommend building them for unadulterated modeling pleasure, as far as I can tell at this stage!

The construction of the Duck is progressing smoothly so far: the glued seams are closed, but the wings have just been attached.

Some of the etched parts on the outside are already applied, some - especially around the half-finished engine block - will follow.
I decided to finish painting the individual parts of the Vacu cockpit first and then cut them out of the form. You can see them masked here. The good thing about the Vacu cockpit is that it shows the front part of the cockpit correctly, unlike the kit: it had an angular shape and a central strut; both are round and within wrong in the plexiglass part.

We'll see what I can manage there - no risk, no fun! 🙂
And besides: if you have an Achilles heel, doesn't that also mean that you are an Achilles?

pure joy to follow your builds! Curious how the Vac canopy will fit as I also have this combination my stash …

Thank you Thomas!
I'm not a master with the Vac pulpits either; I paint them in one piece, as you can see here. Only then do I cut them out. This also has the advantage that I can see more clearly where I have to cut with the scalpel because of the colour.
In the meantime, the "Duck" is prepared for the light grey of the underside; I want to apply this tomorrow.

I now tried to liven up the monochrome surface: in several passes I sprayed slightly modified shades of Gunze H42 lightened with white, in between I dabbed the colours with liquid mascol. As a result, a vivid colour application builds up. The next step is to apply the decals; the surface is already primed with glossy clear varnish.

The Grumman Duck is ready for the rigging! The flat profile wire from R&B is used again. The struts and their glued joints to the wings are still shiny, this will be matted to match.

Nice progress!
How does the third man downstairs actually get out in an emergency?
Do you use the rigging set? Grumman J2F-5 Duck Rigging Wires (SBS Model 48066, 1:48)

Thank you both! I can't answer that either, but it looks really bad with that!
Yes, I got this set and used parts of it: the bracing of the inner struts are made with it. For the outer ones, on the other hand, I used "my" method of drilling through. The wires, anchored on one side with glue in holes, are put in tension and glued under tension with CA glue. This, I may say, worked quite well here too. The reason for the effort is that wires that are only "set in" quickly lose tension and start to sag - especially when other tension wires build up tension in the opposite direction.
Now, nice and cosy the bracing is finished: sanding the combination of CA glue as filling, of polysterol and of course the protruding metal wire ends is a little.....well, laborious, but nothing that cannot be managed.
Now the paint is touched up again and the gloss varnish is applied, then the decals can be applied.

So, the Duck is finished! It was quite a time-consuming undertaking towards the end, even though the number of parts in the kit actually pointed to faster building pleasure. The Duck simply carries a considerable number of rigging. Thank you for your interest and helpful comments, I hope you like the pictures of the Duck! A very enjoyable kit that I highly recommend to anyone interested.

Roland, very nice Duck and interesting Plane. Was there only the vacuum Cannopy in the kit?

Thank you all for your motivating words!
No, in the kit there is a neat transparent canopy- but it shows a wrong shape of the front windscreen and also, and this is a pity, it is shown closed.

Saw it on HyperScale. Fabulous! Was this kit 1/48 scale, or 1/50th? I think I saw this as 1/50th somewhere.

Roland Sachsenhofer
Thank you John! I have not measured, but I would never have doubted that this formidable kit would have a scale other than the 1:48 scale.
