Is it possible to hide an album until it is ready for publication?
Reason for asking is to be able to store images of an on-going build in the album and only present it to the community when the album is ready.

Currently this is not possible. Are other having this requirement as well?

I think this is a very good solution to get your WIP pics organized in a preliminary album, only visible to yourself. I often have photos on different cameras, with this option I can give some structure to this. I also have models that are published in model building magazines, so I cannot yet post all the reveal photos. I can put them in an album for post later here on SCM 👍.

I agree that a "Publish" feature would be useful for photo albums. gorbygould and Alec K also expressed support for this when it was originally requested in January (by Alec K).

We can also store images on our computer or cell phone and upload them when we are ready.

I just have a concrete example where hiding an album could be useful. I just put a light base layer of alclad-116 on my MIG-19. It would be nice to upload that picture now with a caption: first base coat alclad 116. It would permit me to remember forever that I used alclad 116 and as soon as the plane is finished a complete build overview would be available to everyone with one push of the button.
Now I have to manage all those build pictures locally which somehow seems to beat having a SCM account.

because i think that each time i upload a single image it would create a news feed entry. if we all use scm to document our builds this way then imagine how many news feeds this would generate.

there is only one entry per album, not per image. So the same "news feed" is reused for a full album

I think what he's saying is each time an image is added a new post is generated for updated photo album and he is trying to reduce the quantity of unncessary new-photo-added posts.

@Mike: exactly what I expect would happen if I use SCM this way.
This is the reason for my original question to have the option to "hide" an album until all pictures are in there. I would like to document a build from opening the box, to the finalized result, and this would mean entering a picture every now and then over a months long period. Better to hide all those small uploads and only release the album when finalised.

Ok Francky, but some other people are happy to share as the river flows and why should we forbid that? And as Tim is writing if I understand well only the album is counting for the database, not each single image added to the album.

You don't want people to be able to follow along with a build in progress for hearing their comments and feedback as you go? Why not use a folder on your computer as a faux "photo album" by storing your build photos there and then upload them all into an online album when you're done?

If you create a project to go along with your album, you can link Alclad-116 to the project. You can choose what you used it for; interior/exterior/etc and even add your personal comments

@Oliver, I talk about an option to hide, not to forbid things
@Mike: just because it seems more efficient like this. If I go back to albums on my own computer, then I can as well stop there.
@Martin: seems even more complicated than using a local folder
but it is all not that important after all 🙂

Having the photos strictly on your computer and never sharing them on Scalemates would prevent others from being inspired by your work. They are of course your photos to do with as you choose. Multiple people have asked for the ability to "hide" photo album updates until they are ready to be "published", and a (temporary?) compromise was to delay the associated newsfeed post by 15 minutes after saving changes. (So in your case you've got 15 minutes to finish that build after uploading a photo!!!) I know Tim is working on a lot of high-priority improvements/features so maybe photo album publishing enhancements might get considered after his workload has cleared up, who knows.

@starbase:
You may be used to galactic speeds in which 15 minutes is a lifetime. But, me humble mortal earthman need 4-6 months to finish a build 🙂 so 15 minutes will not help a lot.
I would very much like to share pictures of my builds and my request to be able to hide an album (or at least avoid a new-photo-added post as you put it so nicely above) until the content is complete would help.
We'll see what comes from it. 🙂

thx for the feedback! My current view is, there are 2 options +/- reaching the same goal. but still very different
1) Hide albums from newsfeed + profile and manually activate them X months later
2) Being able to upload an image without pushing your album to the top of the newsfeed. When looking at your profile the album would be there!
Option 2 sounds good enough for me. (option 1 makes things extra complex and the "social" control on which images are uploaded remains present. Eg. I once had to remove an album because a user found a way to upload 1000's of non modeling related pictures)

I believe there is a third option : change nothing. And I would favour that one.

I would support leave as-is,
In this circumstance, lets say I don't want to talk about my build in-progress, or see it in the newsfeed, I just set the discussion visibility to Private, The album still shows on my wall, but nowhere else (Like how you can keep Projects out of the newsfeed and do the discussion on the album only). I can then build the album and put in all my comments, then when I'm ready to show the world, set the discussion to Visible, and start the conversation with a comment "It's all done!" which drops it on the newsfeed.
Of course, anyone who sees my builds knows I don't do that, I enjoy the discussion while the build is ongoing more than if it's just the finished article, which usually elicits a few compliments, and maybe a couple of questions. Commenting on a running build is a whole different beast, I find it can influence the direction of the build, and even solve issues before frustration gets the better of you. I love to hear the ideas, tips and extra research info you get in an active build discussion.
Funnily enough I was coming here today to ask for more notifications about albums, but I'll pop that on a separate request.

An album seems to me like a finished project, ready to be published, whereas a project is ongoing, with fresh posts, and running commentary. Separate experiences. The ability to add to and polish an album privately until satisfactory would take the pressure off completing an album, and also allows one to ramp up the pressure with an ongoing project where people are watching.

I kinda agree with JD, but the project as it currently stands doesn't really work that way as the album contains the photos of work in progress, the discussion happens mostly on the album. As a result, I now turn off commenting on Projects and just use Albums. The project only exists to link the kit to the album. Now I've discovered Collections, I'll be moving my multi kit projects to Collections, and the projects will be the individual builds only

The newsfeed algorithm is slightly updated:
1) Nobody sees your albums in the newsfeed unless a picture is uploaded
2) New albums (even with pictures) are only visible in the newsfeed after 3mins
So it basically means you have 3mins to get things to a reasonable level. (looking at most new albums the 3mins is a nice time)
if that is an issue: You can always delete the "newsfeed" entry and reenable it when you are ready. (recently a button was added at the bottom of your album to restore it in the newsfeed)
However your albums are 100% visible in your profile from second 1 (that will not change)

Having thought about it some more, I agree with Starbase101 in that, keep all your photos on your device until ready to publish, thus you need only publish your project intentions, or nothing at all until you are ready. Then it's easy to upload pics, put them in the right order, and add captions very quickly. Otherwise, if you publish an album then it's fair game for running commentary, which may or not be desirable. Some only post completed models without any building process, and that's fine too. You can have it both ways. I've just completed my first public build, and it's certainly a different experience. Can be stressful at times, when you know people are watching, but everyone at Scalemates has been so supportive and nice it has made the hobby much more enjoyable, and has been a powerful learning experience for me.😎

And a good build it is too JD. I really think that the discussion is deeper in a build album. Finished articles mostly seem to peeter out after the first few comments. Personally I'd love to have some way to tag an album as "Build" "Finished" or "Reference", so I'd have a place for the reference photos that is clear. Although I'd probably still put my Finished in the Build album and just set the First completed photo as the title picture.
When I'm deciding which brand of kit of a particular subject I will purchase, I do look through the associated projects & albums, a Build album is gold, because I can see what the base kit is like. Finished is all well and good, but it doesn't tell you which details are the kit and which were added by the modeller.
Dominik's recent dual build is a perfect example. With just the finished album, you'd be forgiven for thinking the kit comes with opening doors and trunk.
