Christian BruerI recently start the A-7E. The model will be a part of a presentation some of my friends and I planned for next year.
I use the Hobby Boss kit, which is a good basis and represent the main dimension very well. As with most kits there are some pros and cons, but I like the overall look of the kit parts with fine panel lines and rivet and open electric bays. Folded wings are not an option of the kit, so I planned to use the Wolfpack Wing Fold Set. Unfortunately there is a slightly curve along the wing leading edge which I could not found on the original Corsair. The wings parts are straight according to my reference material so I choose not to use the Wolfpack Set but to scratch build the folding mechanism.
The status is, fuselage halves assembled, landing gear assembled and wings in progress. All in all I'm on a good way to add some extra details soon.

Christian BruerThere seems to be a tolerance problem with an insert in the mould. Notice the step and hard edge along the panel line on the photo no. 17 right below. I decide to rework it by adding two component filler and sand it. Also the panel lines have to be reworked. So far it went out quite well. There is just a small edge broken off I have to rework. My last work before Christmas. I applied a wash and highlights using oils. The instrument panel hood was assembled. Attention was necessary to fit it in the correct position, otherwise the windscreen will not fit correct. Because of the resin part I used superglue, where you just have one chance to make it right.
Once finished I pre assembled the windscreen, there are only small gaps and in corrections to correct but all in all the fit is quite nice. The width of the
windscreen is approximately 1,5mm to small so I fit it with tension. To make sure that it will hold fast later I'm thinking to use Tamiya plastic glue, but
I'm not sure if there will be fogging on the clear parts?! Are there any recommendations?

Oleg Bogoleitamia plastic glue and any ather in my case always makes foogy effects on the clear parts. I cant understand how modelers on youtube flood clearparts with a glue and dont get whaite plastic... I use tamia glue for clear parts and it is perfect if u dont need to press the part to taks it place.

Christian BruerNext WIP on my A-7E Corsair. I'm in progress working on the ordnance. Eduard's TER, Mk. 82, Shrike and a Sidewinder will be the Corsairs load. The Eduard parts are excellent designed and casted! A slightly modification on the kits pylons are scratch built adjusting pins instead of the clumsy casted ones on the kit parts.
Finally for today, a modication on the canopy to assemble and fix the part later before to add glue.

Well, let us start the new year with some modelmaking. I attached the windshield. First I fixed and sealed it with Future, once dried I finally fixed it with superglue. Due to the sealing with Future there is no fogging inside and outside of the windshield - many thx to Bernhard Schrock for the hint!
After a first sanding I add White Putty to align the windshield with the fuselage. It looks all very promising.

Well today I add a wash and highlights on the electronic bays and airbrushed the windshield along the filled and sanded areas - the fit is perfect now. The wings are in place now (no photos yet) and the mule is ready for some paint. I bought the mule second hand and unfortunaly there are the PE parts missing, but no problem when you have some styrene by your hand 🙂

Palo, the chair was made out of 16 single parts of flat and rod styrene. I have cutted and shaped the parts out of my memory. We had such chairs in the workshop where I work for 30 years ago.

Christian BruerThe less accessible areas of the display has to be pre painted and weathered. Tie down points had to be set and along the catwalk all bits, pieces, cables etc. filed up the so far empty space.
This is all finally done now and the carrier deck section ready to paint.

I had no time during the week, but a productive weekend. The display got it's first layer of gray, the workshop some lights and electrical wiring and I had added the last details at the Corsair - landing light, Sidewinder rails, etc.
Today I had also painted the Corsairs lower surface in bright white.
I hope to be on a good way to finish it all untill the end of March to display it fist at the Euro Model Expo in Lingen.

Well Slavo and Oliver, usually I work in smaller scales, 1/144 and 1/350 and do and did different modifications and extra details on my models. So may it is the reason why I have a hand for it?!
Mhh, Lode, for sure there is a difference to 1/35, but you can do much more in the larger scale and I only tried to show what seems to make sens in that scale. But no sweat and tears so far, cross my fingers😄

Alec KHi Norbert - I have just airbrushed Future the other day so will share my experience. I used Infinity airbrush with ,15mm nozzle at about 100-105 kPa. I mixed Future with iso 90% alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol) at 1:1 ratio. I did try to spray it straight from the bottle, but got nasty beading. 3 light wet coats were needed for smooth finish. Good luck 👍

Well, I spray it straight from the bottle without thinning it. I apply it in several thinn layers with 0,25mm or 0,35mm nozzle and approx. 1,5 bar. This time I first found, just under magnifying glasses, a rough texture on the sprayed surface. I'm not sure if this comes from the sealing with Future or from the layers of paint I sprayed before the sealing. As Alec mentioned I'll try next to thinn it but with destilled water.

Christian BruerWell it is time to come back to this project. It is nearly done, but awaits decals and final finish on the Tractor and Corsair.
First I have ordered some 3D printed figures at Reedoak (sorry for misspelling on the photo). They have very lifelike poses and are excellently done. I can highly recommend them.
Then up to the decals. I have started adding the decals on the Tractor and nearly a complete disaster happened while applying the white 16. Placed on a coat with Future and with some Micro Sol added the decal starts to shrivel like usual, but then bubbles starts to occur on the surface. First I thought there were air bubbles in between the decal and the surface, so I stick in with a needle, but they did no went away. It starts getting really worse, so I decide to carefully remove the decal. Once done I noticed that the problem was not in between the decal and the painted and sealed surface, but in between the resin and layers of paint. I do not really know what exactly happened, but I assume, that it was a reaction in between the resin surface and soaked layers of paint.
Anyhow, I removed off the paint on the hatch, cleaned and repainted it and add the number using a self made stencil.
So next I will come back adding the decals on the Corsair, knock on wood that all will work well (I do not like to work with decals, you know 😉 )

Christian BruerThe decals are now all on. During the week I have added the white and blues stars, each of them as a single decal, and a few stencils. Now up to a final gloss coat, subtle weathering and final finish with semi matt.

It is much more work to do on a scale 1/72 aircraft diorama than on one in scale 1/144 😄
But this one was a lot of modelling fun and I am loooking forward to start the F-4B.

JohnA truly fantastic diorama. The cutaway into the skin of the ship is a very nice touch that adds some interesting insight to the activity of an aircraft carrier. I have deployed on several carriers and can say you captured the essence of routine flight deck operations. The level of realism is top notch - you even got the floor of a typical maintenance shop just right. The only difference between your A-7 and the real one would be tie-down chains. Well done.

Well about the tie-down chains. Would they be removed when the plane is raead for flight ops? May I can add Reedoak figure, the one with shouldered chains and put another one beside on deck?

In another forum I got kind feeback from a Coral Sea crew member, who made the Shakedown Cruise in 1970 prior to the Deployment my diorma represent.

Hi Christian, in this clip you'll see that the chains and chocks are the last items to be disconnected from the aircraft before it taxies out on its own power. Up to that point the movement of the deck can cause the aircraft to roll off the deck if not secured or if not powered up to idle engine settings to counter any ship movements. Hopes this helps to make an exquisite diorama even better. 😉

JohnChristian - Patrick is right about the chains and the video gives a good depiction of getting an aircraft ready for flight. I think your diorama is wonderful and my only humble suggestion would be to reconsider using the figure in green coveralls and the cap. By the 1970s, the Navy was starting to get more strict on flight deck safety and proper uniforms and equipment (the Forrestal and Enterprise fires from the late 60s were big motivators), so the green coverall figure would be out of place on the flight deck. The chalk-and-chains figure (with a brown shirt color) would be much more fitting.
I served from the 90s until a few years ago and my last ship was CVN-69.
I appreciate your work and dedication to history and detail - it helps to inspire and motivate me to produce better models and replicas.

@John, thx again for the insights and additional information. So I will rethink what and how to add. I don't want to fix the model to the base, because of movement to Shows, so I think a brown shirt and tie down chains on the flight deck close to the tie down points could be a choice.

Christian BruerI have added some more deck crew members and tie down chains. Again excellent details on the Reedoak figures, a pleasure to paint them!
On close photos the deck structure looks much to clean. It looks ok from farer away, but next time I'll try to pre paint the deck with a paint roller to get a rough surface structure. Well, learning process never stop 🙂
