Welcome David 🙂

Cockpit almost ready! For the sharp eye; yes I have installed the RB50/30 camera, which is not appropriate for the nachtjager. I'm building a normal FW 189A-1 🙂

Björn Svedberg
Cool! I'm following this. You are off to a great start! 👍

Looking good Erik.

Nice cockpit Erik, I'm following.

Germen V
very nice

Erik Leijdens
Thanks mates! This is a nice kit but also a odd kit to build.. The sequence of the building process is not as your usual kit. Also the instructions are a bit vague and if you go with GWH, everything is RLM66.. But the fit is good and that helps a lot. Will take my time on this one, the kit needs it..

Mike Daniels
Nice wires! Following.
3 November 2018, 15:33
Erik Leijdens
They come with the kit Mike! The engines too
3 November 2018, 15:35
Mike Daniels
Ooooo, thats very impressive! Looks like a kit worth investigating. I dont have a '189', but I might have soon. Not seen a Great Wall Hobby kit before.
3 November 2018, 15:38
Patrick Hagelstein
Ooh! That are some nasty ejector pin marks on those inner walls. But you fixed those nicely! What are those protrusions on the propeller hubs for?
3 November 2018, 15:46
Clifford Keesler
Very nice Erik.
3 November 2018, 16:21
Erik Leijdens
@patrick, I believe they are air-adjusting hubs. When the prop stops spinning, those protrusions will feather the prop using airflow. GWH moulded them straight but they should have a bit of a pitch. They are small windmills in fact 😄
3 November 2018, 20:14
David Thor
motors are looking very nice!

Moij werk so far Eric!

Danke David und Holger!

Thanks for the explanation Erik. 👍

Soeren R.
Indeed really good work so far Erik.
Count me in for the rest 
Whats your opinion about this kit so far?😉
15 November 2018, 07:41
Erik Leijdens
Well, it is a nice kit in terms of detail and fit. But the engineering isn't quite logical on some parts imo. Also some of the parts are very fragile, like the undercarriage. And to make things even more tricky, these have to be installed between the two tailboom halves to make risk of damaging them during the build even more higher..
15 November 2018, 11:26
Soeren R.
Ok so a very fragile build where you have to be careful.
Thanks for the hints Erik!
Really looking forward to see yours finished😉
15 November 2018, 11:52
Erik Leijdens
Thanks Soren! Will do my best mate 👍
15 November 2018, 20:58
Gordon Sørensen
Cockpit looks great, Erik! And with all that glass, everything will be visible. Engine looks good too. Are you going to do the "squiggly" camoflague?
16 November 2018, 00:34
Erik Leijdens
Yes, Gordon it's a real greenhouse! Inviting for the super detailers. I'll go with the kit details🙂. Yes, will try the squiggly pattern. Saw this one in the Valiant wings book with some good reference photos. First the standard splinter scheme in rlm70 and rlm71 and then rlm76 "squiggles"
16 November 2018, 09:30
Wim van der Luijt
looking forward to the painting stage Erik
16 November 2018, 09:49

Great work so far, and great subject 👍
16 November 2018, 12:17
Jens
I'm about to do the night hunter, too, very nice to see you master the greenhouse 👍
2 January 2019, 17:12
Erik Leijdens
Well Jens, i'll make it as normal A-1 Uhu. See the project cover photo. But I have put him on hold now since I'm in Dutch airplane mood lately😄
8 January 2019, 14:11
Chris Greathouse
That's an odd shape! Looks great!! I'm on for the ride.
3 June 2019, 20:39
Nathan Dempsey
Oooh I hope you get this one going again soon Erik!
3 June 2019, 21:21
Erik Leijdens
Me too Nathan, recovered it from shel of doom last weekend! With as result that the tail booms are complete and glued to the "fuselage".
3 June 2019, 21:40
Clifford Keesler
Cool project, looking good. Count me in.
3 June 2019, 23:47
Christian Lehmann
Very nice. My Grandpa served an this type of plane as an observer.
4 June 2019, 04:51
Erik Leijdens
Very cool Christian! So he was a beobachter. Did he survived the war? If so I can imagine you heard a lot of great stories from him(if he wanted to spoke about the war off course)
4 June 2019, 15:59
Christian Lehmann
He survived and died in 1992. He was soldier from 1929 on starting in the cavalry switching to the short range recognaisence units during a reorganisation. He was wounded in the very first hours of the polish campain and was in hospital during the invasion of the western countries. He did the whole campain at the estern front and was dismissed from the Luftwaffe in southern germany in may 1945. But he never spoke about the war. He always said that he can't remember. We believe that he had a lot of horrendous experiances at the eastern front.
4 June 2019, 21:00
Patrick Hagelstein
That's always the sad thing... When governments decide to wage war, it always comes down to the soldiers having to do and suffer from it. My grandmother's brother was in the Dutch Indonesian campagne and he never spoke a word about it until his death.
4 June 2019, 22:22
Björn Svedberg
Looking great so far Erik! 👍 I'll be tagging along. 🙂
9 June 2019, 08:13
Stephan Ryll
Comming along nicely Erik 👍

More detail pics than on our app, great work Erik...👍
9 June 2019, 13:24

looks very promising!
9 June 2019, 13:46
Nathan Dempsey
Challenging greenhouse!
9 June 2019, 17:00
Clifford Keesler
Looking very nice Erik.
10 June 2019, 02:41
Erik Leijdens
Amazing story Christian! A wonder he survived the Easter front! Pity he never wanted to talk about his wartime experiences, but very understandable off course. Do you have any wartime pictures of his Uhu? And was it an A-1 or 2?

Thanks mates for the comments, glad I retrieved this one from the shelf of Doom 🙂
11 June 2019, 19:37
Clifford Keesler
I don't believe in a shelf of doom. LOL. I have an FB-111A that was the first kit I built after returning to the Hobby. Now with my new skills, I have been slowly collecting goodies for it, and it will soon be getting a whole body facelift. LOL.
11 June 2019, 23:34
Christian Lehmann
@ Erik: Unfortunately no. As far as I know this was all lost at the end or after of the war as well as all the awards he recieved. I only owe all the certificates.
12 June 2019, 04:57
Erik Leijdens
Despite some insane temperatures in the mancave due to early summer temperatures I still got the guts to spray some paint. Not a perfect splinter but with the "scribbling" I can camouflage the imperfections.
24 June 2019, 21:33
Jens
You make out of a good kit a real gem on model skies 🙂 👍 👍 👍
24 June 2019, 21:45
Nathan Dempsey
Looking great Erik, I can't wait to see more.
24 June 2019, 22:29
Clifford Keesler
Agree with Nathan, looking fantastic.
25 June 2019, 01:28
Rene Scheiblich
Very nice job so far Erik!
Got this one stashed recently as well, love this plane.
I like your paintjob. I have similar temperatures in my mancave and can't be bothered to paint right now.

Are you planning on keeping the bird relatively clean like the cockpit?
25 June 2019, 03:40
Holger Kranich
It is taking shape, Eric! Looks goood!
25 June 2019, 06:34
Erik Leijdens
Well, saved this one for the 2nd time from the shelf of Doom... Apparently the "scribbly" camouflage was a bit to much to asked for my airbrushing skills.. So a different camouflage scheme now. It's a machine form NaGr15 in Poland in 1944 with an attractive RLM75, RLM76and RLM22 camouflage scheme. This one does not turns out as a masterpiece but hey I'm glad it saved from the shelf of doom once again..
8 November 2019, 14:58
Stephan Ryll
That bird is looking good Erik 👍
8 November 2019, 15:00
Jos Jansen
Go for it Erik....you'll have support from your Freakzzz buddies😉
8 November 2019, 15:11
Holger Kranich
Wow, that looks fantastic, Eric!
8 November 2019, 15:36
Nathan Dempsey
Looking nice Erik. I've always been a fan of the Leopard-like camo schemes.
8 November 2019, 17:11
Rene Scheiblich
The camo you chose is a stunner. Good job Erik.
Reminds me of a Stingray I once saw 🙂
Sprayed it when it got cooler in our corner of the world again? 😄
8 November 2019, 18:10
Murad ÖZER
indeed it's a stunning camo. well worth the save imho, one of the most unusual things that came outta luftwaffe at the time, would be a great addition to the cabinet!
8 November 2019, 18:50
Clifford Keesler
Looking very nice Erik, good job.
9 November 2019, 01:43
Wim van der Luijt
The squigles didn't look bad at all......but the save looks excellent Erik! We overthink these schemes, they were applied in the field by feldwebel Speckbrock using the materials he had at hand....but anyway, the UHU looks really good now!
9 November 2019, 08:57
Erik Leijdens
After months of residing on the shelf of Doom, I decided to get the Owl back on the bench. Had some troubles with the extreme fiddly undercarriage and of course the debacle with the paint job. Anyway, things are sorted now, and she is almost done. Not a masterpiece but a nice addition to the display cabinet. Also my dog likes it I think, he takes every chance to get on my chair 😄
19 June 2020, 05:27
Sergej I
What a nice slick plane! And those masks seem to be worth every penny 😄 👍
19 June 2020, 07:51
Thomas Bischoff
Honestly it looks great but I see what you mean with „not a masterpiece". In my company you would get a „matches expectation" rating and not an „exceeds expectation" 🙂
19 June 2020, 08:07
Jos Jansen
No doubt about it, IMHO excellent build with passion and dedication Erik...! 😉
19 June 2020, 08:32
Clifford Keesler
Excellent build Erik, well done.
19 June 2020, 20:34
Munkyslut
I love that camo, beautiful work 😉

I like it. Nice work Erik.

playtime 222
Didn't take that long. Nice job.
20 June 2020, 10:18
playtime 222
Question - I see there are a LOT of ejection pin marks in areas that look difficult to sand flush. How did you manage that?
20 June 2020, 10:20
Neuling
Excellent build!
20 June 2020, 15:01
Erik Leijdens
Thanks mates!! Started this bird in October '18, finally she is almost finished! Wil post the end pictures soon.
@Thomas Bischoff, haha yes it's an intermediate result. In my company the final judgement would be a "C"
20 June 2020, 20:00
Gerald
👍
21 June 2020, 09:05
JD
Wow, this is exactly the camouflage I see... In my dreams... It floats there... glowing like a creature on the sea floor.. hard to judge the distance... a living thing...
21 June 2020, 09:13
Zbynek Honzik
Great job, Erik!
21 June 2020, 10:07
Erik Leijdens
@JD, LOL 😄
@playtime 222, I just filled them with Mr. dissolved putty.. In some places they are still visible though..
21 June 2020, 10:58
Alec K
Good for you in getting it finished. The paint looks super 👍
21 June 2020, 11:52
Erik Leijdens
After two+ years this one is done. Will put it away in the cabinet and never look at it again. It just didn't worked out the way it was supposed to be.
26 June 2020, 20:48
JD
Thanks for including how much time it took you, now I don't feel too bad about how slow I am! Things will get done...eventually
26 June 2020, 21:06
Patrick Hagelstein
And what again was wrong with it?...... As I can only see a beautiful aircraft! 👍
26 June 2020, 21:58
Neuling
Same question as Patrick!
27 June 2020, 09:46
Erik Leijdens
Well Patrick and Neuling; First, this kit is not very clever engineered. Fiddly undercarriage which broke several times, and you haven to place them early in the build. Also I totally screwed up the initial paintjob, resulting in second layer of paint on top the first. Some decals ripped, I just left them off. I'm Just not very pleased about the overall build progress. But from a distance it looks fine..😉
27 June 2020, 11:18
Patrick Hagelstein
😄 Maybe that's why the pictures were taken from a distance??? 😉 I get your point and agree that a complete repaint doesn't always show up that well on close scrutinization... 🙁 Either way, just looking at the final results, not thinking back about all those issues, it's still a result many of us look at in awe! Don't be too hard on yourself! 🙂 👍
28 June 2020, 03:20
Erik Leijdens
Thanks Patrick 🙂. I will post some close up pictures today. They are bit far away now indeed
