bughunter After two years of inactivity I restarted the project to build the Sopwith Schneider, the winner of the Monaco seaplane race April 20th, 1914.
The two wooden main floats have now wooden strips for easier ground handling.

As I mentioned there are no decals available for the Racer. But a friend jumped in and offered to help - he created masks on his cutting machine 👍 Since X-mas I own such cutter too, so it is another important reason to finally use the provided masks! So the racing numbers are applied to the wings.

bughunter Thank you Erik! Sometimes I NEED to work with wood, this project was a long time on the ToDo list and the floats are done long ago. Additionally a friend cut the masks for me on his electronic cutting machine - so I was forced to put the Albatros aside and really start this project.

Hans, the engine will look better after a oil wash😉 This project is somehow a repetition of my "Lebed" project, which is was a russian copy of a Tabloid, on wheels. And this Schneider is a Sopwith Tabloid with 100hp engine on floats, and the win of the Monaco Schneider Trophy was historically important for the company Sopwith.
Norbert Steffens Wow. What a huge amount of modifications. The Idea to build the floats out of wood ist great. The rotary enginge looks perfect.

@Norbert, here is no kit of the Monaco Racer in 48 available, but with many differences to the later production float plane. The advantage is, that this is a unique model. I guess if I'm done, somebody will release a kit.😉
@Bernhard, die Streben sind aus Furnier verleimt, auf Breite gesägt. Die Messing-Pins sind nur am Ende, gebohrt und eingeklebt. Bei derr DH-2 habe ich mal mit einer Säge in der Mitte eine Nut gemacht und die verlöteten Heckstreben mit Halbschalen verkleidet, wäre hier aber Overkill.

Slavo Hazucha Your reproductions of early 20-th century (although some say the 19th century only truly ended in the flames of 1914-18 - a thought I really like) materials and DIY assembly techniques is extraordinary as such, but provided the sizes involved, it's really a craftsmanship achievement - to scale everything down, including all the different surface & texture structures - top 👍
however... I've seen relics of heresy on picture 14 - one wielding 2 blades, the other equipped with a full four... Will you use one of these, or are we in for a full wooden reproduction?😉 😄

Slavo, picture 14 is only to show all the options provided by the kit. Both airscrews do not match, because after some trouble with the engine, the Sopwith team borrowed an airscrew with smaller diameter but higher pitch from another team, as advised by engine manufacturer.

After a long research I discovered the mounting of the front bearing of early Tabloids and this Schneider.

bughunter Thx! Bernhard, you are right, the rivets are 0,2mm nickel silver. Now I can continue, I had to add the front before to stabilize the thin alu "ears".
Christian, to work with metal is fun for me, and the only way for me to create a stable and robust model. As usual on my models the rotary engine should be able to rotate with the mounted airscrew😉

bughunter So I added the promised update. Made new masks after familiarise myself with Inkscape (inkscape.org What a great tool 👍😢 and cutting plotter.
bughunter Thank you Jim and Alec! It is a "Silhouette Portrait 2", but it comes without Linux software. So I use it with Inkscape and a plugin, works great. The plugin looks only for USB, so Bluetooth is not working (yet).

Tom ... bug, what plotter are you using? I'm interested looking into something like that. I've always wanted to get a laser cutter but maybe a knife cutter is more cost effective. I've seen the Cricut Maker/Explorer highly recommended but not sure how detailed of cuts it can do for things like detailed masks.
bughunter Yep, that is what I wanted to answer too😉
A laser cutter is may be not a good idea to cut PVC masking foil (chlorine!). A knife cut is much more precise.
Is this Cricut a cloud device? I heard, that some cutters needs a internet connection and cloud - I would never buy such things. If the cloud is no more supported, the device is bricked.

bughunter Oh no Tom! Two years ago I built virtually the same kit - a russian Tabloid copy called "Lebed". After that model was finished, I created the wooden floats with idea to create the Schneider one day. The real work on this project started in the first week of January to use the Xmas cutting plotter.
So this racer was created in 1,5 month.
