Cheers guys 🙂

It's still awaiting a panel line wash, clear matt coat and final weathering etc, but has been a great kit to build and has convinced me to start the longer barreled Ausf.L version next.

Really convincing wear and tear, James, so I'm curious about the shiny new wheels. Do they get The Treatment at the next stage?

Thats one tidy 3

Thanks guys 🙂

@ Bruce - Yes, the wheels (and everything else) are still shiny due to the clear gloss coat I used to seal the decals. The paint chipping is just the foundation for the next steps in the weathering process 😉

Watching with even more interest, James. ?

Thanks mate.

A little more progress with a dark brown panel line wash applied, as well as some oils used on and around the lower suspension arms. (I may need to darken this area up a bit more)
I also gave everything a coat of Tamiya flat clear XF-86 and installed the wheels and tracks, but forgot to chip the teeth on the drive wheels... Grrrr (will go back and touch these up later)
The rubber on the road wheels (and upper rollers) was dry-brushed with Tamiya weathering pastels (grey)

Lastly, the tracks were a little loose and didn't want to sit/hang naturally across the upper runs and between the upper rollers, so I've used some off-cuts from the the sprues to wedge them down a bit and applied some Tamiya extra thin from below in an attempt to weld them into position so that they hopefully sit a bit better.

I'll leave them now for a couple hours to cure properly before removing the wedges.
Fingers crossed it works out ok.

Thanks Michael, Bruce and Sebastian 🙂

The wedges appeared to work quite well in giving a little sag to the track runs.
With that done I applied the final touches of weathering and finished it off, but has been too wet until now to get some outdoor pictures.

A very nice Tamiya kit, but this boxing is WAY over priced due to the inclusion of a metal 75mm (short) barrel, engine grills and an optional extra commander figure for the turret.
Would be more cost effective to buy the standard Panzer III Ausf.L kit (which I'm currently working on) and obtain your own aftermarket grills and barrel etc.

Cheers 😉

Very nice indeed - great paint and perfect weathering, at least to my taste.

Weathering is really nice as well. Visible but not too heavily chipped.

@ Spanjaard - Apologies mate, we must have posted at the same time and I missed your comment... but thanks 🙂

@ Mark, Neuling, WhiteGlint, Pete and Nathan - Cheers for your positive feedback guys. Always appreciated 🙂👍

I'm quite pleased with how the paint chipping worked out in the end as I was concerned that by applying the grey base coat on top of the Dunkelgelb (instead of beneath) it wouldn't look right... but layering up the clear gloss and matt coats over the top, before building up the oils and pigments appears to have done the trick. I'll play around with this method a little more as it does away with the need for using hair-spray or brand-name chipping mediums between colour coats etc.

Many thanks for your step-by-step for the painting and weathering, James. I've been waiting all week til I could have a look at your finished work, on a reasonably-sized screen. I really like the subtle gradations you have achieved, as well as the bare-metal scuffs 🙂 It all looks very convincing, and tells a story for sure!

Album info

Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf.N
8th Panzer Regiment, 15th Panzer Division
Tunisia - 1943

Another straight out of the box build.
Awesome kit that fits like a dream and has no nasty/hidden surprises.
My only gripe with the kit is the inflated price over the Standard Tamiya Panzer III boxing.
A small metal barrel with photo etch grills and an optional extra commander figure to choose from does not warrant a price hike of over 25%.
Far cheaper to buy the standard Panzer III Ausf.L boxing and get cheaper aftermarket replacement photo etch and metal barrel etc.
