WOW... I was wondering if it is worth the effort or just dump the kit and build the whole thing from scratch. It looks like there is going to be not much left of the original kit. You do have the persistence. This is coming from a guy that has a few old Kitmaker locomotive kits in his stash.

Well, scratching all would be better, at least that is what I will do with the next one. I am still practicing and figuring out stuff. Trains are just awesome. It was amazing walking around and on top of it at Sinsheim. Thanks again to the museum.

Being a train enthousiat myself (1/87 American H0n3 steam) I really love to see this kind of scrath-building. You have still a long way to go, so succes, and will follow this one.

Very cool build, well worth spending one of your 13,5 lives on Käpt'n 😉

Thanks guys! Quite a few train builders here. Well, research is tough. And more pops up on a daily basis. I have already written many pages on the railroad sytsem development between the wars and need to finish it at some point. I will make it available to the BR52 builders and the public once finished. I am also working on a step by step system to modify/get rid of the worst mistakes of the kit for future modellers, in case the kit will be tackled by anyone in the future^^. I wish I had done even more research before I began, as i had to rip off stuff and change already built things many times over, and even threw a basball at the tender and smashed it in rage^^ (I managed to fix it though)^^

I redesigned the whole fire box, tore the old one out and am drilling the 40 holes for the flues (the big smoke pipes running through the long boiler). Any idea of how to create about 1600 bolts easily? is there row PE or something?
15 December 2016, 22:01
Angel Yovtshev
I recommend you MasterClub's resin bolts-depending on size you will need between 8 and 16 packs. They cost around 2,15 EUR per pack in Russia(I ordered last weekend).

Thanks big time man! I will have a look into this, but I think they got them with pins only (Ideally I would like heads only 😄) cleaning/cutting this many will be such a bummer^^

Blaubar; you could take a look at the site from Meng Models. They have bolt heads and rivet heads on plastic plates (no hassle with cyaan) in different sizes. They are relatively cheap. Maybe this is something you gould use. I think I ordered some items via Domino (België). The Sockel shop (DE.) Has them also.

Thx Lex. Will compare the two meng and MC. Sockelshop is always the best service available^^.

Thx also from me, Lex! Checked last evening Meng nuts&bolts and already put some on my to-order list 🙂Blaubar- if you will consider MC, you can send me an e-mail(mine is in Contacts) and I will send you my Excel with full data about MC items. They carry quite wide range and it's easy to end ordering something, that will not fit into intended use(I stashed half of my first order for that reason).

Some more paint and a few little fixes applied to the tender while the engine frame received some more rivets. Slow progress...
4 January 2017, 18:42
ISA Models
The frame has been cut, the front thrown into the trash bin and new parts were designed. Too many faults and inaccurate parts had to be fixed.

that's becoming a true work of art and love... very nice conversion, and to bad that that so much surgery is needed...
3 April 2017, 09:13
ISA Models
Yeah, it is really annoying. No review ever mentioned just how inaccurate this kit is, and so are most of the AM PE parts^^. (Imagine a Tiger hull with no hull floor... people would go crazy...)

My GOd!!! this is realy AWESOME!!! lots scratch build and creativity!!

Marc, there will be much more white stuff in the near future, as most parts from now on are neglected by the kit.

Too bad that the 52 kits all suck.

I am guessing that the 1:72 scale HobbyBoss kit is equally off. I am not a train guy, but wonder if there were significant productifon variations that could explain the Trumpeter version? Or did they just guess their way through the design process?
18 November 2017, 14:54
ISA Models
Alec, no clue about the 1/72 one as I don't own it, but from what I have seen, yes, same issues. They mixed plate and bar frame design features, added tons of post-war stuff and also the overall frame is wrong either way. (Bar and plate frame are two different steam engine frame types, only approx 300 52s had the bar, whereas some 6000+ had the plate frame). They just copied post war engines I assume... and they were modified so vastly....that many have nothing in common with an original 52. i got a huge flickr album with all the research and the kit faults and flaws. For the k4t30 tender they must have used a Turkish modified one amongst others as a model... they are the only tenders to have the way too wide rear box that trumpeter added afaik. The model as it is in the box, was under no circumstances any of the different versions produced. (Still, it is a nice OOB steam locomotive, but no 52) <- though that is rivet counting^^

Thanks for the explanation, much appreciated. Is there a wartime BR-52 in existence?

Looks like a fun project. 🙂

Yeah, a bit^^. It took ages cutting and redesigning the frame and the interior. It's fun though. Happy holidays to you, too! 🙂

The kit evaporated ????. It turns out it is no BR52 at all and useless for a depiction^^

Album info

A vast modification and scratch building project to recreate a real BR 52 and nothing ficticious as the Trumpeter kit. During the course of this project and many museum, archive and expert visits, I have acqiured a vast amount of information, showing just how bad the kit is.

The build includes interior, including smoke and fire boxes, cabin interiors, new tender interior, modified tender coal bunker, a new frame for the tender, as the kit one is simply wrong and bad.
