Excellent idea for the handles!

Always picking up modelling tips on here and I think this was one I got from Kerry Cox. Twist the yellow and black thread and coat in something like Krystal Klear. I kept the treads stretched on a pin board while they dried.

Yea that idea came from the man in the land down under. LOL.

He's pretty good Clifford and a nice guy too. He's given me some advice on my F-4 which has some issues as it's a poorly started eBay purchase. Your Phantom is looking great by the way.

Thank you Gareth, I need to get some some pictures of my phanthom put up. It is on the gear now. Kerry is a great guy and it is a honor to me to call him my friend. He gives me tips all the time also. There is a boatload of great guys on scalemates.

I like your 104, always have liked the Revell 104, I use Hasegawa Pe sets and resin details on most of my Revell kits. I built the Hasegawa TF-104G, Man that spoiled me on the Hasegawa 104s.

I remember loving the shape of the 104 as a kid and my dad telling me the Americans calling it a Widow maker as they lost so many pilots, but the Canadians ran it for years with only 6 aircraft loses. When I did my aircraft weapons course we watched a video of F-104s in Vietnam dropping napalm. The Revell kit isn't great, but you get what you pay for and this was not expensive. But that takes any pressure off to get it spot on and to just enjoy making it.

Today's effort consisted of mostly rubbing down. I was going to have the access panel open to the gun, but as I read up on the aircraft I found out those lovely Canadians removed the gun, they didn't think they would need it I guess.

That stinks, I did not know that, I was considering building the RCAF version of my Iterali 1/32 F-104, , I bought the brass M-61 cannon as I want to display the gun bay open. Guess it is back to the German Navy version. That is a shame as I really like the RCAF color scheme.

They may have fitted it occasionally to practice I guess. I've not found any Canadian F-104 reference photo's of the gun, they all seem to be German.

Thanks James, just chipping away at it. It's no Hasagowa, but then neither was the price. I think it should make up into a nice plane for the shelf.

Nice progress. ^^Yes they do! :-P

Looking great Gareth.

Thank you, I seem to be a sucker for these cheep kits and seem to be surprised when I find raised panel lines and flash, but they keep turning out quite nice. I hope this will come out as well as my revell cobra.
9 March 2016, 00:10
Clifford Keesler
I also build a lot of the "cheap" Revell kits. They turn out nice for me and I have honed my modeling skills on them. I just did my first full rescribe on a Monogram F-106. Old farts like me on fixed incomes can't afford 70-90 dollar kits. I have a field day if the wife let's me spend 50.00 on one. I was suppurised to see that Hasegawa's F-104C is only 24.00 from spruebrothers.
10 March 2016, 19:48
Clifford Keesler
Oh p.s. The starfighter is looking fantastic.
10 March 2016, 19:49
Gareth Windsor
I almost got a 1:32 Starfighter from Amazon as it was a pretty good price. Although I don't need any more models right now. Even though everything is in storage right now and I've traveled to clanad I still have an F4U, a Phantom, Seafire and now a Revell A10 in the cupboard, I better contact modellers anonymous. And thanks, think I thinned the white a little too much as it didn't cover as well as I would like.
10 March 2016, 23:28
Clifford Keesler
I do have the 1/32 104, my wife bought it for me for Christmas in 2014. What possed her to buy it I'll never know. LOL.
11 March 2016, 20:11
Gareth Windsor
My dog got me the Tamiya 1:48 F4U-1 one Christmas, which was very nice of him and a surprise to everyone else but me.

Vallejo white aluminium went on very well. I just need to stay the nose and gloss coat before the next step.

Looking great sir.

Gareth Windsor
Why, thank you.

Christian Ristits
Awesome!
30 March 2016, 19:15
Clifford Keesler
I like making 15.00 kits look like they cost more.LOL. Though the Hasegawa F-10C is only 27.00 now. Wonder why?
30 March 2016, 22:28
Gareth Windsor
They seem to cost more as they become a little rarer. Traders preying on us nerds.
30 March 2016, 22:40
Clifford Keesler
Yea, know what you mean. That was supposed to be F-104C not F-10C. LOL.
30 March 2016, 22:42
Gareth Windsor
I almost bought this the other day
amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B0..N-AKL&ref=plSrch
But seeing as over the last couple of months I've bought an A-10, B-25, a 1/32 F-4E and extras for my Brit Phantom, I thought I better leave it.

Revell weathering powders to dull back the odd panel and high light the cockpit panel.
31 March 2016, 18:00
Clifford Keesler
I'll bet that was a hard one.
31 March 2016, 21:58
Gareth Windsor
That's the panel at the back of the cockpit, lol, no, I'm not quite up for doing the gauges just yet. Powders are pretty cool though. Don't like the effect, just wipe off and try again, then lock in with a clear coat.
31 March 2016, 23:29
Clifford Keesler
I like weathering with pastels also. I was referring to letting the Hasegawa 1/32 Starfighter go by. I have the Itelari 1/32 one.
1 April 2016, 19:42
Gareth Windsor
She's ready for a clear coat and decals.
2 April 2016, 00:20
Clifford Keesler
Yea baby! looking good. You got me hooked, I ordered one. LOL.
2 April 2016, 23:33
Gareth Windsor
Lol, I'll be expecting good things after your last build.
3 April 2016, 02:29
Clifford Keesler
Thanks, nothing like adding a little pressure. LOL.
4 April 2016, 13:58
Gareth Windsor
Decals can start tomorrow.
4 April 2016, 16:33
Bryn Crandell
Looking good so far. Can't wait to see the decals.
4 April 2016, 18:47
Gareth Windsor
Thank's Bryn. Going Canadian with this one eh.
5 April 2016, 11:45
Holger Kranich
Ah, ist time for Pledge and decals!👍
5 April 2016, 11:49
Clifford Keesler
Looking good!!!!!!!!!!
5 April 2016, 17:41
Gareth Windsor
Thank you Clifford, unfortunately in my eagerness the clear coat wasn't fully dry so I have some paint repair to carry out at the back.
5 April 2016, 17:55
Holger Kranich
Looks great!
5 April 2016, 18:21
Gareth Windsor
Clifford, has your Starfighter arrived? Can you do me a favour and measure the pitot probe (if it's a 1:48) and let me know the length. Mine has broken off and pinged somewhere, so it's scratch build time.
8 April 2016, 20:40
Stephan Ryll
Look's very good 👍
9 April 2016, 07:42
Gareth Windsor
Thank you Stephan. I am looking forward to having a work bench one day as that should stop me from breaking bits off my models.
9 April 2016, 15:22
Clifford Keesler
Mine has not arrived yet, but I have 2 that are assembeled in my den, so I will measure it and let you know.
9 April 2016, 20:03
Clifford Keesler
P.S. Looking awesome.
9 April 2016, 20:04
Gareth Windsor
Thank you guys. She's getting there. And cheers Clifford. I tried googling both the 1:48 and the real dimensions and got no where.
9 April 2016, 22:06
Clifford Keesler
7/8" base to tip. That is the measurement I got on all 3 of mine. 2 Revell and one Hasegawa, so that must be it. Hope that helps.
10 April 2016, 23:38
Gareth Windsor
That helps a lot. Thank you.
11 April 2016, 11:16
Clifford Keesler
You are welcome sir. I put up some pictures of my F-15E, primed and preshaded, ready for paint. I got the top of the bird painted today, plus varios other things, gear doors drop tanks etc. Will paint the belly tomorrow.
11 April 2016, 23:06
Gareth Windsor
Had to take a break to do some studying, but decals are all on and ready for another clear coat.
18 April 2016, 19:17
Clifford Keesler
It looks awesome, well done. Looking forward to seeing the final result.
20 April 2016, 13:08
Mike Grant
Can't go wrong with a Canadian Straighter 🙂 Looks good 👍
20 April 2016, 13:43
Gareth Windsor
Thanks Mike. This "Lawn dart" is my first model bought and built in Canada. And Clifford, the newly built probe is on.
20 April 2016, 18:17
Clifford Keesler
Good, glad I was able to help. I like that Canadian scheme, I keep looking at it for my 1/32 one. I can't decide between the Canidian one or the German one. LOL.
20 April 2016, 21:53
Gareth Windsor
Having just moved to Canada I was biased. I think they look good in a camouflage scheme.
Or maybe something completely different,

21 April 2016, 03:08
Clifford Keesler
What color did you use for the dark bands on the exhaust?
21 April 2016, 23:49
Gareth Windsor
I didn't change the colour. I used Vallejo white aluminum all over but undercoated black for that band and went a little lighter with the top coat.
22 April 2016, 00:11
Clifford Keesler
How are the Vallejo metal colors? the only one I have used is gun metal.
22 April 2016, 22:13
Gareth Windsor
Pretty good. No smell and little mess. Goes straight on from the bottle. It's not quite up there with Alclad but it's the closest water based alternative. They have a fantastic range of metal colours too.

Choppa Nutta
nice build 👍
25 April 2016, 21:46

Calvin, if you go to YouTube and search Flory models Vallejo metal paint review. Hopefully it should work.
25 April 2016, 22:23
Spanjaard
i did one Revell F-104G Starfighter about 25 years ago.... one of this days, y may try to remove the paint and do it all over again... or maybe it is better to buy a new one start clean... certainly it did not look as good as yours! 🙂
25 April 2016, 22:46
Calvin Gifford
Got it and subscribed to the channel 😉
25 April 2016, 23:00
Clifford Keesler
Awesome looking F-104.
25 April 2016, 23:58
Gareth Windsor
Phil Flory has some good reviews and "how to" guides too.
Spanjaard, the F-104 is quite the unique shape. This Revell Kit was ok but lacks the detail of the Hasagowa
26 April 2016, 00:04
Spanjaard
the problem would be to get the decals of the Canadian tigermeet that i used the first time. but maybe there is an after market out there i can get.
26 April 2016, 07:13
Germen V
It can't be that hard to make them yourself of go for the Belgian Tiger
26 April 2016, 11:32
Spanjaard
i actually want the canadian... probably the "only" issue will be the little tiger heads... but with careful masking is not impossible. the rest is usual canadian markings that should be possible to find. maybe it is still possible to find the old monogram kit with the decals.... but i am trying to stop myself from buying more kits. far too long out of the hobby... but still buying kits from time to time has lead to a pile of boxes 😛 i am sure i am not the only one....
26 April 2016, 12:12
Spanjaard
order has been placed, thanks a lot! 🙂
26 April 2016, 15:07
Gareth Windsor
You're welcome and looking forward to seeing your build.
26 April 2016, 16:21
Spanjaard
well, that will take a while i am afraid.... but it will be done eventually 🙂
26 April 2016, 18:29
Clifford Keesler
Choices, choices, do I build the Canadian version or the German on in USAF markings? The one in USAF markings actually belonged to the Luftwaffe, but they used it to train German pilots.
27 April 2016, 19:00
Gareth Windsor
I think you should try the US Starfighter in the Vietnam triple camouflage.
27 April 2016, 19:27
Gareth Windsor
Oh, and thanks again for the probe measurement. Worked out ok.
27 April 2016, 19:28
Clifford Keesler
I had not even thought of the SEA camo. I forgot they were in that color scheme.
