Scalemates F-14 Tomcat Group build 2020

Album image #1
Album image #2
One of the biggest jet-fighters vs one of the smallest ones (Gnat) 😄

Album image #3
Something is wrong here - the instruction states the inlets should be on the starboard side, while the workaround show port side inlets...

Album image #4
The fit of the nose part is not amazing.

Album image #5
Same story with the fuselage/inlets front parts. Some sanding seems to solve the issue.

Album image #6
Cockpit finished.

There's a challenge to be solved somehow...

Album image #11
Masked the canopy. The most problematic places marked.

Album image #12
Well, not bad, however still some sanding and filling is needed here and there.

Album image #13
First priming. The Phoenix rails filled with Bondic UV glue look better than expected.

Album image #14
Album image #15
Started spraying the first translucent layers of Light Gull Gray

Album image #16
Started the decalling

Album image #17
Been waiting for that guy a looooong time 🙂

Album image #18
It took few evenings to force the brittle old decals into submission (printed by Techmod A.D. 1992!)

Album image #19
On her wheels finally!

Album image #20
The last stretch - decided to skip the tanks.

Album image #21
Alright, so is it at least as good as the one on the box?

Album image #22
Let's see then 😄

Album image #36
1992 - 2022 (perhaps 1993?) I promised myself once to build it once again and here we go 🙂

Album image #37
30 years apart in my modelling skills (and storage) 😉 Can I scrap the old one now?

Album image #38
Hey, I even painted the helmets then! 😮

Album image #39
And onto the shelf, besides its older cousin.

After gluing the cockpit to the rest of the fuselage, it turned out I have a small step on the lower surface (where the Phoenix rails are attached). Either I didn't pay enough attention to the fuselage assembly or the cockpit part is too low.
Currently thinking of using either some evergreen profile (need to wait for the local shop to reopen) or will sand down the melt-sprue-putty or apply the Bondic UV glue. Won't use Perfect Putty as it's not suitable for scribing.

Cuajete
Maybe you can put a strip of Evergreen or similar to fill that gap (sand and work the shape afterwards).

Thx Cuajete for the hint, however I gave the UV glue a chance and I'm positively surprised. Hopefully it will not peel off in few weeks😉
Short update, did the first priming today.

Looking good mate 👍!
Looking forward to your next steps.

Well done, Łukasz!

Thanks guys, I need to work on the panel lines (some of them disappear, some I have already damaged😉 )
I'm still thinking how to paint it - whether mess with the salt method or just marbling, need to break the overall gull grey monotony😉

Juergen Klinglhuber
Looking good !!

That kit is fighting you, but you're definitely fighting back! 😄 If I hadn't read your comments I would've guessed it was a straight clean build. 😉

Łukasz Gliński
Thanks mates. I have to admit I described the most painful issues only. 😉 Lately I had to scratch the pitot mount, as the original part has been taken by the Carpet Monster 🙁

Cuajete
Nice shading 👍
25 April 2021, 19:43
Łukasz Gliński
Gracias amigo. 👍 Still learning to have a smooth shading 😉
Summer is here and not so much time to keep assembling the kits, however I started adding some decals every now and then 🙂

Nice! and very inspiring. I should build more Tomcats 🙂

Fully recommended, they are good looking jets indeed 👍
The Aaardvark is there, yay! (The red line on top might be not 100% correct though)

Nice progress 👍 Finish line comes closer...

Looking so good with those decals 👍

Łukasz Gliński
Thanks mates. I'm slowly approaching the landing zone 🙂

The Aardvarks were such a neglected squadron, I think it's the first I see here in SCM. Looking good!
24 July 2021, 20:06
Łukasz Gliński
Well, they are rare indeed, but not so badly 😄
F-4J Phantom II VF-114 | Album by Higgscott (1:72)
Still, my Tomcat seems to be the first VF-114 in 72nd in here 😄
Dunno why, I just love that orange Aardvark 🙂
24 July 2021, 20:16
Patrick Hagelstein
With you on that one: they look a bit goofy and cartoonish, but definitely have a ring to them. One of my future projects is an Aardvark Tomcat too, but you beat me to it. 😉 👍
24 July 2021, 22:02
Sergej I
Almost at the end! It will be a great looking cat! 👍
25 July 2021, 04:58
Łukasz Gliński
Looking forward to seeing yours Patrick 👍
Almost Sergei, but the biggest challenge - panel lines - is still ahead. I think I used too much primer while blending the nose into the rest of fuselage and now will have to bypass it. Most probably pencil will be needed.

F-14A VF-114 | Project by Hagel (1:48)
Once my move is finalized, I might put this a little higher on my to-do list. 😉

Short update after almost a year 😄 Added the wheels and working on the very brittle missile decals.
Tried the hook decals today, but gave up, will brush paint it myself.
PS. Need to make space for the FM VF-114 Phantom in the stash 😉

Looks great so far, Łukasz!

Thx, working on the missiles currently

What happened to the tanks, Łukasz? Short range mission? 😛
16 June 2022, 18:32
Łukasz Gliński
Exactly, the Tomcat shape looks nicer to me w/o the tanks (and I'm lazy too 😛)
16 June 2022, 18:34
Cuajete
😄 👍
16 June 2022, 18:38
Łukasz Gliński
And I hereby call it done! Enjoy the pics and let me know how you find the 1992-2022 build comparison 🙂

Maciej Bellos
Your 30 year old Cat is better than my 30 year old reset of my Cat.

As for the new one, it is just perfect! Well done my friend!
17 June 2022, 16:59
Cuajete
I agree with Maciej.
Much better than the box one, Łukasz! Fantastic job 👍

The Tomcat from 30 years ago looks great despite its age. Even so, the experience acquired in these 30 years is noticeable.
Don't throw the old one away... Restore it or, for example, make a Top Gun's pursuit next to an A-4 😉
17 June 2022, 17:39
Sergej I
Beautiful model, Łukasz 👍
Interesting to look at even tho all gray 🙂
18 June 2022, 05:26
Łukasz Gliński
Thank you mates, very glad to see you like it 🙂
Still hesitating to throw away the old one, I'm running out of storage space.
4 July 2022, 14:11
Sergej I
Throw it away, but remember to buy two new ones, to overcome the grief 👍 🙂
4 July 2022, 19:25
Piotr Sarniński-Górecki
Wow - blast from the past ! I build Design repack of Academy kit about 30 years ago :-D Good job 🙂
4 July 2022, 19:45
Cuajete
Don't throw the old Tomcat it away, Łukasz. Restore it a bit and give it away or give it to someone who likes airplanes. I agree with Sergej... remember to buy two new ones, to overcome the grief 😄 😉
