Modelsvit 1:72 Antonov 124

Album image #1
The Russian ‘brother’ of the C-5 Galaxy is the Antonov An-124 ‘Ruslan’. I have seen it take off one time at the old Soesterberg AFB, decommissioned now and former home of the USAFE 32nd TFS ‘Wolfhounds’ F-15’s.

Just as the Galaxy it made quite an impression on me, so I really wanted a 1/72 model of it.. only Modelsvit has produced it in 1/72 scale, so I saved the money and bought it.

Album image #2
A big box, with nicely detailed fiberglass fuselage, tail and wings. Also some polystyrene sprues for the engine parts, cockpit and gear.

Album image #3
A lot of big decal sheets for several versions..

Album image #4
...really big decal sheets!

Album image #5
The Antonov Design Bureau version

Album image #6
The Volga-Dnepr Airlines version

Album image #7
The Russian Air Force version. This was my initial choice, as I saw this one at Soesterberg AFB.

Album image #8
Another Russian Air Force version

Album image #9
An Air Ukraine version

Album image #10
The Aeroflot version

Album image #11
So I wanted to make this version, until I saw the name ‘BS Modelle’ on the internet. They produce 90% Russian decals, and I found this version:

Album image #12
The modern Antonov Airlines version with the yellow and blue striping. The best look ever in my opinion.

Album image #13
This is the decal sheet

Album image #14
So I ordered the decal sheet, and after 1,5 week the envelope with decals arrived.

Album image #15
Not very high quality, but BS Modelle decals are very low priced.

Album image #16
In 2015 I gave it a try to scratchbuild a 1/72 Antonov 225, with the Modelsvit An-124 fuselage as example.
Here’s the fuselage in comparison with a An-225 drawing and a 1:72 Tiger Moth in same scale.

Album image #17
I enlarged all views to 1/72 scale

Album image #18
The unbuilt 1:72 Anigrand C-5 Galaxy fuselage, the Modelsvit An-124 Fuselage en the Amodel Hughes Spruce Goose fuselage.

Album image #19
A dry test fit of the wings, stabilo, tail and nose cone to get an impression of the size of this kit

Album image #20
Scale comparison: a 1:72 Hughes TH-55 Osage on the An-124 stabilo

Album image #21
First step is replacing the upper part of the nose with the transparant cockpit windows part

Album image #22
Masked the windows in advance, also to prevent the windows from scratches during construction of this kit.

Album image #23
After sanding and testfitting I glued the part on the nose cone

Album image #24
Starting to look like an Antonov!

Lol!!

For the C-5 I used 2 bottles of superglue..
Until now I've used 1 bottle for both Antonov projects, but that I will need to stock for sure..

By the way, did I mention I also have the 1/72 Amodel Spruce kit waiting for me in my stash...

@Lukasz: excuses for this late answer!

My girl and I have moved into a new house last year which has a garage. I only wanted that garage for myself, as I need room for my models and my flight simulator, so we agreed that I can use the garage for my hobbies only and she can have the rest of the house😉
So I turned the garage into a living space and now I have my own 'man-cave' with a cockpit and some big shelves at the wall for these big kits!
