The 29th Armored Brigade was established in March 1940 and was placed under command of the 11th Armored Division. Early tanks issued for training were Valentine and Crusader tanks. In early 1943, the 29th Armored Brigade was preparing to deploy to Tunisia, but the order was cancelled. Training then began for operations in Europe which is where the 11th Armored was deployed in Operation Overlord, June 1944. By this time the Brigade had been issued Sherman tanks (and Cromwell tanks for recce troops). Participating in Operations Epson, Goodwood, and Blue Coat, the Division saw a great deal of fighting. Operation Market Garden saw them guarding the right flank of XXX Corps' drive through central Holland. In December 1944, the 29th Armored Brigade began to re-equip with the A34 Comet cruiser tank. The 11th Armored Division held part of the Muess River line against the German Ardennes Offensive and the took part in Operation Venerable in February 1945. They Crossed the Rhine on 28 March 1945 and advanced to the Elbe River by VE Day.
