1/48 Martin Marietta X-24B, 3D printed.

The X-24 "B" version shown here is an evolution of the lifting body concept, and flown in the early 1970's. These lifting body X-planes were carried aloft by a B-52 and then after expending their rocket power they would glide to a landing. These aircraft were instrumental in providing proof-of-concept for the Space Shuttle.

This 1/48 kit is 3D printed on a Phrozen Mini 4K printer from a CAD design by Will Pattison from the Sprue Cutters Union. Will has done a fantastic job on this. His design is unique - his approach to designing a scale model takes into account the strengths of the 3D print manufacturing process. The parts breakdown is clever, and the result is relatively few parts. The fit was impeccable, all of the parts mated together perfectly. The final model is hefty but still hollow inside. The interior parts are highly detailed. Well done Will! According to Will this kit will be produced by Fantastic Plastic in the future as a cast resin kit.*

I chose the all metal finish instead of the all white version. I used Alclad Hi-Shine plus aluminum over gloss grey base. The white is done with Tamiya gloss white lacquer.

*Please note this is an early pre-production 3D printed test build. The final cast resin product might be different from what you see here.
