Honda Monkey 125.

Album image #1
I told a fellow Scalemate that the quickest way to empty a room on Scalemates was to build a bike but I hope many Mates may see the fun involved in this little kit with a low parts count but a very high quality kit. That’s all of the parts!

Album image #2
Pete Muldoon is responsible for this idea! Groupbuild start date was May 1st and I am waiting for the 2k clear to harden on my Mercedes G5 so I have no reason not to take a peek inside!

Album image #3
The chrome is excellent and it would be a travesty to remove it. Sprue bridges look to be all well placed into the back of the parts. They should be removable from the sprue without damaging the visible chrome surface.

Album image #4
This appears to be typical of how the parts and sprue are joined.

Album image #5
Album image #6
The headlamp is an absolute work of art.

Album image #7
Album image #8
The saddle is actually rubber and very nicely formed. Never seen this before and I have built more than a couple of bikes.

Album image #9
Tyres are beautifully moulded and look sensational

Album image #10
The ubiquitous and obligatory bag of screws!

Album image #11
Parts look clean and crisply moulded.

Album image #12
Shush! Listen! Can you hear the disc rotors calling out for drilling out the cooling vents?

Album image #13
The frame must have given the mould designers nightmares!

Album image #14
The one disappointing thing I’d the fuel tank. It is a featured part on any motorcycle and it is the equivalent of a bonnet / hood on a car. Could you imagine anyone making a car bonnet in two halves these days? For an experienced modeller it isn’t a problem but for someone who has never encountered a feature part where you need to make the join disappear it could be a deal killer.

Album image #15
Album image #16
The brake rotors are very detailed and just need a little drill out.

Album image #17
Album image #18
There is a tiny bit of flash on the valve stem. Wait! No! It isn’t flash, it is a 90* angled valve stem. Now that is detail rich!

Album image #19
Never seen a valve stem like this before. Trucks have an added valve stem for the inside tyre poking through the outside wheel but nothing like this. I will investigate!

Album image #24
The clear is just that, clear.

Album image #25
Decals are not stymied with excess carrier film. They do look very usable.

Album image #26
Masking is supplied for the fuel tank. Ya just gotta cut it yourself.

Album image #27
A better pic of the sprue gates on the chrome parts.

Album image #28
New tool. Raser sprue gate remover. Love it!

Album image #29
The fuel tank before being joined.

Album image #30
Frame needs a little clean up

Album image #31
Album image #32
Oh dear! This will consume some time!

Album image #33
Now stay there!

Album image #34
Mock up.

Album image #35
That join has been fixed. It will not be visible after primer has been applied.

Album image #36
One problem fixed and another appears. This join is under the swing arm and won’t be visible but …. I will fix it anyway.

Album image #37
Finally! THE solution to every modeller’s repetitive nightmare!

Album image #38
Drilling out exhausts ect has for me always been a hit and miss outcome. I found the fix for a log time problem. I have used all sorts of contraptions to centre holes but exhaust pipes can sometimes end in a champher. This one does too!

Album image #39
Cut out a section the same size as the exhaust end, drill with a pilot bit.

Album image #40
.04 guide hole

Album image #41
Enlarged with .4mm

Album image #42
Enlarged again with .7

Album image #43
Final hole 1.4mm. Perfect centre! I did sand the outside of the pipe to g

Album image #44
Monkey needed the bike jig modified a bit! I have one key-word guiding me on the build and that is “fun”. The Monkey is a fun bike and I will try to maintain that theme through the choice of colours and actual colour scheme application. The frame / chassis has had an application of 2k clear. It looks nice but it did make the engine difficult to fit.

Album image #45
Swing arm will have to make do with an Alclad clear coat unless I am ready to put a clear coat on the sister build MV Augusta.

Album image #46
The Tamiya chrome is excellent and the sprue attachment points are underneath the part. Well done Mr Tamiya San!

Album image #47
The wheels are also done in SMS 2k clear.

Album image #48
Glassware done with Tamiya acrylic clear red and orange.

Album image #49
Conundrum. The instructions call for the rear reflector to be painted clear red with no requirement to put chrome or silver paint behind it. There is a decal that is an exact fit for the glass part which I realised after I had applied the clear red.

Album image #50
In keeping with the “fun” theme I have done a “fun” paint job.

Album image #51
Alclad Candy applied to the fork Tubes. I haven’t made up my mind on the bottom colour yet.

Album image #52
Alclad goes off! Stainless steel’s pigments are separating and give a slight “hammer tone” finish.

Album image #53
It also spoiled the finish on the disc brakes. I have masked then sprayed a couple of light coats of Alclad Sepia to show the disc rotor affected by contact with the calliper pads.

Album image #54
Easier to see on the back of the disc in this light.

Album image #55
Rear mudguard assembly, rear lights, number plate and swing arm with wheel and disc mounted.

Album image #56
Chain has a metallic blue green on the chain links.

Album image #57
I have done the fork tubes and rear springs in Alclad Candy Electric Blue.

Album image #58
Wheels on, electrics and cables next.

Album image #59
And, on we go!

Album image #60
Exhaust is in two sections.

Album image #61
Album image #62
You get a choice of two dash pod screens. One live that I have used and one dead blank screen.

Album image #63
Starting to look like a groovy little motor bike.

Hey I'll watch along just because what a fun little kit.

Peter Hardy
Please do Kyle. Pick one up yourself. You need something a bit relaxing after that Shackleton!
1 May 2022, 05:45
Kyle DeHart
Peter, I may just. And I agreed with you...great minds they say. Which is why I started Tamiya's curbside 934 kit while finishing up the Shackleton. Talk about stress free. Waiting for the orange to dry for my Jäegermeister livery As I sit here fiddling with photo etch on a B-25 build. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️😂

Kyle go and pick a kit up. Only Marty, Peter Muldoon, and me in on time. No rules other than a non standard colour.

That hood on that kit is absurd Martin. 🤦🏻‍♂️ They could have easily engineered that in a better way. That was not my most favorite kit. 😂

Peter, you twisted my arm. Ordered one with some supplies I needed so I'll jump in a couple days late.

I know Kyle. I built her as well last winter 😄
And welcome to the Monkey playground!

I'd like to see yours! And thanks. I've never built a motorcycle before, other than a tiny one of about 4 pieces that came in the MPC Gangbusters kit.

Have fun with it Peter. It's a blast to build.

Maybe I should have just said Rimshot! Lol. I'm sorry, I am easily entertained Have you decided on a color for this little jewel?

Jay Dub, STOP IT!
3 May 2022, 08:35
Peter Hardy
Kyle would you like me to talk Australian? It has very little correlation with English! Yes I have decided on a colour. How does Inca Gold sound?
3 May 2022, 08:38
Kyle DeHart
Hahaha Jay Dub. Excellent. Peter, it's possible I have been speaking American this entire time, which also has very little correlation with English. Lol. Inca gold sounds fantastic to me.
3 May 2022, 09:17
Peter Hardy
Was planning on Inca Gold as the feature colour. Looked crap (nice colour but didn't look nice on the bike) so that will change. Did some parts in Alclad Hi Shine aluminium and Stainless Steel, both were breaking down from age so that went kaput. Really happy tonight, NOT!

Terrible Peter. I am also unhappy. My shipment has been delayed 3 times already for no reason known to me. It has managed to make its way partway across the states and I remain cautiously optimistic of its arrival on Monday now…
8 May 2022, 10:38
Jay Dubya
@Pete - you can and will do a mighty fine job of it. I'm a believer.
@Kyle - pure speculation, but maybe your shipment is stuck on the last train to Clarksville?
9 May 2022, 13:31
David Fuller
@Kyle and @Jay - Call me a daydream believer, but I'm guessing it went through Pleasant Valley on Sunday.

Oh no. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂 Well… I'm a Believer that it will get here soon.

Looking great Peter! I love that blue color. Which one is it? I had the same issue with the taillight. Never noticed it until after I had painted the lens. I never used mine and just painted the attachment area chrome silver like you did with yours.

Oh Peter, this is looking great! I'm out of town this week but this makes me itch to get back and get back into my builds!
26 May 2022, 12:04
Peter Hardy
Kyle, I am itching for you to get back too! I have 3 builds running concurrently atm, 2 bikes 1 car and I am anxious to finish the car today!
26 May 2022, 22:31
Kyle DeHart
I have 3 going as well but none this week as we attempt to qualify for the biggest race of our racing season. Lol. I'll get back into it on Sunday.

You're going quicker than the real bike can! I like the hammer tone effect 👍 Neat and clean work Peter

This is fantastic! I am home now and will be digging back into mine. I love the chain color and the hammer tone

Thank you Spanjaard!
Munky, nice comparison, I think?
Kyle, you have a nice tactic going on there, let everyone else finish and then build yours! Now get to work!

Kyle DeHart
🤣🤣 Real life has been completely in the way of my hobby recently. But never fear, mine is on the bench, if only I can get to the bench to work on it!
5 June 2022, 01:14
Tom ...
Excellent build. I'm going to try to get some work done on mine. Not going to go with crazy colors as I don't have any but hope I can do as good a job as you Peter!
17 July 2022, 01:22
Kyle DeHart
Looking good Peter. This has been such a fun little kit.
17 July 2022, 20:06
Peter Hardy
Thanks Tom and Kyle. Project has ground to a halt atm as has my MV Augusta as I need paint and haven't ordered any. Watch out for a 6 wheel Tyrell P34 soon!
18 July 2022, 00:40
Kyle DeHart
I understand; With the completion of my Monkey, I have a P34 coming up soon as well!! It's creeping up the "build it soon" stack. A stack that is totally dictated by whether or not I have useable decals and proper paint colors. 😂 Can't wait to see you bikes done and your p34 project.
18 July 2022, 02:47
Peter Hardy
Kyle, if you have the Tamiya kit be prepared with a ceramic scraper and a glass sander. I have been prepping for two days and still only halfway through the parts!
18 July 2022, 04:21
Kyle DeHart
Ah. Lovely. It is indeed the 1/20 scale Tamiya version.
18 July 2022, 04:46
Robin (WhiteGlint)
Looks great, Peter 👍 Looks like almost at the finish line.

Man, I just want to hop on that bike and hit the trails!
25 August 2022, 15:28
Peter Hardy
Greg, they'd want to be short trails! That fuel tank is plenty small.
