Thanks for stopping by Christian! This is my first Hasegawa Tomcat... Been a real challenge so far. Almost done though, should only be a few more days.

Sweet build Michael, halfway through the pics I thought she was going to be a Luftwaffe Night Fighter. She came out real nice with that effect and another nice touch is marking the wing glove vane, something Hasegawa Cat's don't have.👍👍👍

Thanks Hagel, James, and Michael! This was the first time I tried the "Black Basing" technique, and it did start looking a bit exotic there before I put down the basecoat. Those pics were taken when I still had a long way to go to finish the rest of the model. I will say the technique def takes a while to do, but in the end the mottling effect was worth the trouble, I think.

How does the "Black Basing" technique work, I've never heard of it before.🤔

Wow excellent work so far 👍
Interesting technique you use to fade the panel lines. I haven't heard about that "Black Basing" technique before.
Seems to me it is close to pre shading the panel lines in a dark colour before applying the basic paint. But you can control the fading effect for each panel much better applying bright colours on the dark surface!?

Excellent work so far!
Black basing is now around for some time.
Its a really great and also very easy technique in my opinion.
The result also looks better compared to the normal panel line "pre-shading" - but thats also my opinion. 🙂

Thanks Christian and Soren! The black basing technique is a way to get organic, random highlights and lowlights in the paint so that it doesn't end up looking as symmetrical and artificial as using the traditional pre-shading. By starting with a black base and using white or gray to build up varying degrees of lightness, you can easily and controllably add areas that will show up lighter and darker through the basecoat. It is especially useful for the mottled look of US Navy aircraft. If I were to do a non-US Navy aircraft, I would probably use gray instead of white to tone down the mottling a bit.

Oh thats a yummie Tomcat! This shading seems to look better than salt technique and is easily to apply.

Thanks Holger, Spanjaard, and Daniel! I have never tried the salt technique, but that always looked like it would be tricky to pull off. This black basing is really easy, just takes some time. The trick is to get some areas much lighter and leave some areas darker with complete randomness. For me that is actually difficult, as I naturally want to try to make things symmetrical. I have to force myself to be completely random. LOL

So true Michael, I know what you are meaning. 😄
Btw did you use the base color as the color after the black or did you use another grey or white?

She is a beauty! like the more decent jolly-rogers-scheme very much!

Thanks John, Sven, and Christian! Sören, I used white for the stippling on top of the black. I did that because I wanted the mottling effect to be rather prominent, since the aircraft I was modelling had paint that showed pronounced mottling. You can control how pronounced the effect is by choosing varying degrees of gray, although I would stay lighter than your basecoat or the effect will be lost. Hope this helps, give it a try... and I would like to see what you come up with!
