WIP - 9A52-2 Smerch
Big box full of sprues.
PE parts, decals, tires and some parts in smallest part of box.
Tubes parts in the medium sized part of box.
4 sprues A with 29 parts each.
1 sprue B with 35 parts.
2 sprues C with 56 each.
1 sprue D with 47 parts.
1 sprue E with 52 parts.
1 sprue F with 44 parts.
1 sprue G with 49 parts.
2 sprues H with 53 parts each.
1 sprue J with 53 parts.
1 sprue K with 27 parts.
1 sprue L with 59 parts.
1 sprue M with 61 parts.
1 sprue N with 42 parts.
1 sprue P with 16 parts.
4 sprues Q with 39 parts each.
3 sprues R with 40 parts each.
Transparent sprue S with 25 parts.
Vinyl sprue T with 45 parts.
Parts U for launchers.
As well as V parts.
Instruction with 64 steps.
And 6 different painting schemes.
Green white camo is my favourite now.
However desert one is also nice.
Frame is quite large - almost feet long.
Quality is good but has some flaws like here.
Doing transmission elements - for this I used 51 parts.
Transmission and engine preview.
Suspension for all 8 wheels.
Glued and painted frame front.
Different equipment.
Base of launcher.
It can elevate and rotate.
Engine painted and mounted on frame.
Almost all parts of model.

Not much room for putty or painting.
Cut a 2mm ring from cone, glue the ring into pipe halves, glue a stik into the cone.
You will get the possibility to putty and paint and then slide cone to launcher.
Almost all parts attached to frame.
Including engine, transmission, suspension, piping, axles, tanks etc.

Found an error in instruction. Part P2 should be mounted upside down.

Launcher base painted.
With Partially done fenders.
Front fenders ready.
As well as launcher station with movable ladder.
Air filter, oil tank and engine hood.
Dry fitted wit drivers cab.
"Missiles" ready.
Started to glue launcher - 22cm (9in) long).
Tail and rear part ready. Had to paint rockets nozzles first, then mask them and glue.
With middle parts. Already heavy and long.
All main elements dry fitted.

And partially glued.
It was time to finally paint wheels. Instead of 6 white and 2 white/green I did only 3 white and rest with green.
Temporarly mounted on vehicle (just in case I will have to remove them).
I've also glued the cabins and prepared them for base colors.
Launcher masked for green color.
Few hours later - painted with green and white.
Missiles exhaust.
Some Missiles in tubes.
With caps covering tubes.
Cabs with camo...
... as well as rest of parts.
Dry fit of all painted elements.
Camo is not perfect in some places but I think it went quite good.

Started doing snowy rocks base from styrofoam..
then some plaster on bottom...
added some more shapes...
and on arch...
Most of the styrofoam covered with plaster, doing some scratching.
Road ready.
Painted with desert yellow, flat earth and brown.
Now grey and blacks added and some rocks.
White dry brush and base waiting for snow.
Vehicle assembled.
Here comes Smerch...
I had to add some plaster under front left wheel as it was flying in the air.
When it dried I've add some snow.
Snow added to the vehicle.

I only glued 4 parts of Smerch - it will be a loooong build - model has more than 1200 parts.

Przemek PrzybulewskiOhh, I see. My list was also quite long but when I get this beast in my hands I could not resist. I even put aside my started projects (MiG-23, Kraz-6446 with Tunguska, Type90, SAM-6 with ZSU-23-4, SA-2 Transport) but I can say it was worth it. This is so far the best model that I was building - it's even better than many Tamiya models. Quality of parts, how they are engineered, level of details is really impressive. The main flaw so far is the launcher tubes as they need a lot of attention after gluing two halves of it.

Bart - Yes it is - it's a really nice kit.
As for the tubes: tubes are divided info four sections. Front one with missile cone is about 5cm long and after gluing, only one side needs to be clean up as for the other side you glue some element but I'm not sure what it is. The next section is about 6cm long and it needs some attention as well as next longest section. Main problem is that there is some rod/wiring around the tubes - it it something like rifled barrel but on outside. And two of the bigger elements are doing full turn around the tube but there are also few smaller (like half rod) doing few turn around tube. It is hard to get rid of the join without removing some of those elements.
Take a look at picture 23 or 44 in my album and you will see what I meant.

Scott DuttonWow, again, that interior looks great, with the Cyrillic stencilling and the instruments. Is that the colour that Russian aircraft cockpits also use? It reportable is psychologically the most calming colour. This is a fabulous effort, should be in a museum

Scott - Thanks. Color is similar to cockpit colors but I would say that this one is more green then turquise. Yes I red about it sometime ago that this color is very calming.

It's my imagination, as I started forming the styrofoam I cut the rear wall first but I cut too much, so I decided to add coming at the side and idea of arch appeared in my head. Rest was just a some random adding of styrofoam blocks and plaster layers. 🙂

Scott DuttonThink this is my favourite thing I've seen a quite a while, subject matter, original composition for diorama, and how you have done it together with the outstanding finish quality. You've done snow beautifully. I hope this takes pride of place in your collection and can place it somewhere you can walk past every day and admire. Congratulations, it is a shame its finished in one way, I've been enjoying seeing its progress.

Scott - Thank you very much. I have a shaelf where all my model sits next to my working place so every time I turn head right I can see them (from the very first model to the last one), some I like more then others, some were experiments, but every model bring some good memories. And you right it is little shame that form so many option that this model offers I chose the simpliest one, but Hey, it is always a good reason to build another one as this model is great that I would gladly do the next one.

Matthias - Snow is made from baking soda. First I sprayed some hair lacquer then applied soda. You can repeat this process as many times you want/need so it is better to do it in small steps. This method is very easy to use and if something is not as desired you can always remove some with brush. For the wheels I put some soda with hair lacquer in the small jar and applied this pulp with old brush. That's it. I think that effect is quite good.
