Masking Advice?

Does anyone have any advice for how to get your masks secured? I've been having a lot of trouble with colors bleeding under the masks, even when ive tried to be careful about pressing the masks down as tight as possible. I'm brush painting, if that's a factor.

Maybe brush starting on the mask and towards the direction of the painted area? That sounds tricky. To keep masks secure I burnish them with a toothpick or similar tool to make sure they're flat and free of any gaps against the masked area.

That's a really good idea. I'll definitely give the toothpick method a try

One method I read about involves painting the seam (where the tape meets the surface) with a clear. This seals the joint and paint can't go under. Basically, any creep under the mask is not visible as it's the clear coat vs. the paint.

Oooooh that's really smart!

A slight variation of Alec's advice: if a base color already exists then paint the base color at the edges of the masks (the effect is the same as for the clear in Alec's tipp) and then the second color.

Good call, thanks Michael. Probably a preferred method 👍

If you're going for the paint-the-edge-shut method, you'll want to cut the tape loose after painting, instead of just ripping it off.
