Tried my hand at airbrushing Alclad chrome this morning. I think it will do alright. First time airbrushing.

Album image #22
Test fit, nice

Album image #23
Have my two primer and two secondary fuel tanks base coated for alclad chrome.

Album image #24
Well, these decals are crap as well. This is what they did in the water.

Album image #25
This is after 10 minutes of trying to save it. Obviously gave up. I guess I'll go plain blue.

Album image #26

The stripes are actually from the AMT Peterbilt Wrecker kit.

Album image #38
Not really what I was going for. I spent 70$on custom decals that were junk so I just went with something else.

Left the roof

Album image #41
My custom door cards.

Took this to Major Arts and Hobby model show on 9-9-23 and picked up a second place in its class. I do like how it turned out even though it's not how I originally planned.

You just know that I'm taking a seat on this one!
Keep an eye on the turbo mate. Some kits, the turbo was moulded wrong? Also, there's a rim on the wheels sprue, that's not mentioned in the instructions/directions, that should be fitted to the chrome rear wheels. Other than that, nothing else springs to mind, at this moment?

How did you do the cast surface?

It looks fantastic so far. I sit and watch the coming parts

The cast surface was accidental. Here's how it went. I did my usual primer coat then I hit it with that ultra flat rustoleum sand. It wasn't exactly what I wanted, too flat, so I hit it with tamiya semi gloss clear hoping to bring it up a notch in the gloss category. It did the rest on its own. The next time I looked at it it had turned to that cast look. It's not really what I was going for but the hood isn't going to open on this build anyway so I'm leaving it as it is.

Good First try of airbrushing! The texture of the engine is great. Maybe it is repeatable.

Nice work mate. For reference, Molotow do a refill for their liquid chrome pens. It comes in a kinda eye dropper bottle? Perfect for airbrushing, straight out of the bottle. My technique is a light first cover, followed immediately by a second wet cover, then watch it shine. Best not to handle the part, for a couple of days, then clear coat with Alclad 2 gloss clear, or the Klear floor polish.

I love the stance of this kit. One day, I'm going to make a day cab version. You should be able to feel the weight behind it now, too? Detail Master do some MACK badges that add a little spice into the game.

The kit Bozzer always tells me to find!! Looking really good.

Kyle, seriously, just look at Kenneth's pictures? Can't you see that, hauling a reefer or a flatbed, down the highway? I love my R models, but the Superliner really has a bulldog stance, of being tough and ready. I was totally born in the wrong country!

Oh it's a good looking truck for sure!

How's things coming along, with this one, Kenneth?

Finally (I hope) got a good set of decals, now I have to remove what I applied from the previous set that turned out to be terrible. Things have been hectic since going back to work, including weekends. Ugh.
14 July 2023, 17:39
Bozzer
I can relate to that Kenneth. Between work and making the new cave, I've had zero time for hobbies.

I think we all feel life intruding on our bench time. I have been slow for about 2 months. Small progress but, I'm challenging myself with new techniques all the time, and the learning of new skills is developing nicely. Sometimes, slow progress is the price for advancing your skills. Just 2 cents worth.

Following this build. It is one of the few trucks I do not have. I love your "inspiration" truck's paint scheme.
Between my wife's garden and being On call at work for 1/3 of my life, I have not had ANY bench time for 3 months until yesterday.

@ Bill Newcomer. That's it! I am writing my congressman! You SHALL have bench time! This suffering needs to stop! You need inspiration not these stormtrooper tactics! Who is doing this to you? How DARE th........ Oh, it happens to everybody?! Sorry.
This just in..... I should probably just shut up 😉 lol

My 'newish" job is repairing refrigeration systems for large grocery store chains. When the weather gets hot the marginal systems misbehave. An 11 hour work day is a SHORT day during the Summer. Also I am "on call" for 1/3 of my life. Fortunately I have had only two 14-1/2 hour days in the last month. For being 62, I am handling it surprisingly well. It just eats into my free time.
21 July 2023, 03:46
Bozzer
I hear you Bill. I'm also "on call" A usual day is 10+hrs, but my call outs can be anywhere in the UK. This is what we call "silly season" because the kids are all off school, so that's when colleges, universities and schools, have their major work done. So, we have to try and fit that in, whilst looking after our usual customers? I've literally just come back from working away in the North East, for the weekend. Two new power supplies for Aircon, in some fancy office. I love the job, and the company, but I can't wait to get back to sniffing glue and paint thinner, again.

I feel you all, I pull 50+ hours a week minimum, haven't completed anything since November of last year and with the current administration and climate of my area as a boarder state, not looking like I'll be getting any time soon. This is a beauty of a project, looking forward to your end result.

My busy season at work as well. Feel all your pain. All of my progress has ground to a screeching halt as the hours at work have picked up. It'll slow down at some point but until then I have made little to no progress on anything.

We're all brethren, when it comes to the plastic fairy!
Another reason why I enjoy Scalemates. I can watch the other guys, and get my fix! And I'm sure that there's many like us? In autumn, these pages are going to explode, in dramatic style, with all of us withdrawal victims, bouncing back from cold turkey 🙂

Time is always a problem. In the summer I have much work to do in the garden.
Beside that I am painting (no kids but doors and walls) in my house.
And then the kids have free from college so I also have less time to build.

Nice work on the decal save mate! I hope you sent an email to Round2? That's really a poor show, on their part! However, the smaller stripe works well, in separating the blue. Glad you kept at it 👍

Round 2 does need to up their decal game. It seems very inconsistent in the kits I've built. And I'm no Round 2 hater.
16 August 2023, 09:17
Kyle DeHart
Having said that you're getting a nice result in spite of it.
16 August 2023, 09:18

The decals that I had problems with were aftermarket to replicate the real truck. The decals in the box I had no problems with. Round 2 decals have been pretty good to me so far.

Aced it mate! I never had any doubt though. I have to give you credit for your use of the wrecker decals though. I would've never have guessed, unless you told me? Personally, I think that they fit really well, especially where you've got creative on the sleeper. I'm not a lover of that high top sleeper, so if you check out my silver Superliner, you'll notice that the sleeper roof is smaller? That came off the LTL sleeper, straight swap. I prefer the look. Now I'm looking forward to seeing your next big rig. Congratulations on a well executed and documented build, my friend.

I agree with Bozzer. Really turned out great. That's a fantastic looking rig

Got a question. Is the AMT offering a rebox of the Italeri superliner?

Yes, this is an italeri rebox.
