Erik, I've been using an already "ancient" Nikon D50 with the included 18-55 lens! Nothing fancy. I think that taking care to light the model conveniently is more important than the camera. I use a diffusion box under the ceiling light and that provides me soft diffused lighting that is sufficiently good for my photos.
