Aghis Barberopoulos
Hello Augie. Please excuse my ignorance but, what is the material "treasure silver" ?
19 January 2013, 20:24
Augie
Hey Aghis, Its something i read about and wanted to try.. its a wax gilt.. that can be thinned with turps.. i just put it on with a finger and rubbed with a cloth to get a shine..

I'm thinking this might be a way for me to do a NMF on things

I`ve some additional colours from "Conoisseur Studio" like Brass, Pewter and Copper.
It is the same product as what we knows as goldfoile or silverfoile. This products are normally in use with restaurateur for golden or silver frames, frescoes etc. With the "Treasure" brand you will have it in wax like structure.
I use them not with turpentine, only dry brushed and later buffed!
Great stuff indead, with lot of potential!
🙂

Augie
hehe thanks Dirk.. i will try that way
19 January 2013, 21:14
Augie
Guess what Dirk... it works soo much better that way.. the pic i just uploaded show it

Excellent result, Augie!
Fine metal finish done........
No doubt, this product has potential!

By the way, is this the intruder? What kit augie? What scale? I have something similar to your silver and it gives a very silvery sheen.
19 January 2013, 23:06
Augie
This is bits from the scrap box.. just bits i can try things on.. Think this was the old frog kit..

Hi Augie,
did you already try, when you have to paint over some sections, where you used treasure silver. Would be interesting to know, if anything happens and what, when done so.
20 January 2013, 07:20
Augie
Hi frank, not tried paint yet.. Will try today after giving it some time to dry
20 January 2013, 08:37
Augie
HI Frank... Paint test passed

I used the most abusive paint i have.. which is Humbrol Authentic Colour
and its over painted very well 🙂 I think we're onto a winner

@Augi
I've got the same but tin. I will use this for my Mig-19PM.
20 January 2013, 18:42
Augie
Thanks Michel.. i will try to get tin too

So Augie, I am coming a little late to this thread, but I like your results so far. The fact that it can be over-painted after thoroughly drying first is a big plus. How about decals? Is this the method you used on your Monogram 1/48 F-105F Thud? Looks very very nice. I have several natural metal aircraft schemes I wan tot do and will look for this product in my local arts & crafts store. R/ Dutch

Augie
Hi Dutch,

This was the trial which did get used on the F-105F. About the only issue I found, and really its not that much of an issue, was it can wear when being handled a lot. but you can touch it up very easily and quickly and it just blends in.

Decals, paint, all went on fine with it. I used Microscale decal solutions with it and it didn't cause me any problems

A couple more questions for you. First did you try masking over it? I am curious as to whether or not it would just all get pulled right up. And second, did you try spraying anything as a sealer?
27 October 2016, 03:02
Augie
Hi Don,

Masking is the same as touching. there can be some marking but easily repaired.
I use Future as a sealer, brushed on seemed to behave with it.

Its about £6 a pot certainly worth a try

Just checked this wax out and there is plenty of it available on Ebay

My planned first build of 2017 is going to be a side-by-side the old Monogram F-86 and the new Academy kit. Both of which are of the "The Huff" plane. That will be perfect opportunity to try this.
28 October 2016, 03:50
Augie
Try on some scrap first. Apply with soft brush 🙂
28 October 2016, 08:28
Donald Dickson II
Was this applied straight to the plastic or primer?

Never mind. Just looked at the pics again. Straight to the plastic.
30 October 2016, 12:15
Augie
Hi Donald,
Yup straight to the plastic works fine, it also does work on paints too 🙂

OK, I have searched Ebay and can only find hair coloring wax. LOL
And a general search on Google shows it all from the U.K. Argh.

Augie
Will see if i can find one for you this evening
2 November 2016, 11:07
Kees Kleijwegt
Hi Augie, that's looking promising!
Is it the same material as AK's 'true metal' product?
2 November 2016, 14:03
Dutch
Augie, I looked up a vendor in the UK: Hobby Ceramicraft, and ordered two bottles. A clerk responded to my order with a very nice note saying that the shipping from UK to US was exorbitant, so she cancelled the order and suggested a US source: Mayco Color. I looked up their website, but could find no mention of Treasure Silver Non Tarnishing Wax Gilt. So I emailed them on product availability; still awaiting a response. In the meantime, I stopped by my local Michael's craft store and picked up a tube of Rub'n Buff Silver. My initial unscientific experiment on the back of the package is that it is not as bright as Treasure Silver, but may approximate Duralumin finishes. I will experiment more later this week on plastic and report my results. R/ Dutch

Donald Dickson II
Dutch, I was thinking about that stuff as I have seen it in Michaels before. I may pick some up and try it as well.
Augie, thanks in advance for your trouble. 🙂

Gordon Sørensen
I was looking at Michael's website too and saw the Rub n' Buff. Looking forward to your report Dutch!
Another I was looking at is Daler Rooney Goldfinger (also available in silver!).
2 November 2016, 17:36
Augie
🙂 looks like you gents are sorted then maybe.
Thanks Dutch look forward to hearing the results.

Kees, I dont know if it is or not, I've never used the AK stuff so couldnt comment.
2 November 2016, 17:59
Dutch
Gordon, I will look into Daler-Rowney Goldfinger Silver paste as well. A store stocks it here locally (though much further drive) and I will drop by this afternoon. R/ Dutch
2 November 2016, 18:49
Dutch
OK. Well the local paint store has closed or moved. Though I see Daler-Rowney Goldfinger is readily available on line for a price. So I will try the Rub'n Buff and report back.
3 November 2016, 02:40
Donald Dickson II
I got some rub and buff at AC Moores. I grabbed another product as well. I am having good luck with the rub and buff. Lets see how my results and Dutchs compare once we are both done.

Augie
🙂 ok

Looks like for Aussie's, Connoisseur Studio Wax and Liquid Leaf are available from the Gold Leaf Factory at goldleaf.com.au/
The Silver Gilt wax is $23.32 AU for 25gm.
4 November 2016, 07:39
Dutch
Ouch! Not cheap!
4 November 2016, 09:00
Augie
Ouh thats expensive
4 November 2016, 16:42
Donald Dickson II
Whoa, definitely expensive!

I have pics, but photobucket is down. I dont know how to directly load them to comments on someone elses thread. So I will just do an album right quick and link it.
5 November 2016, 00:13
Kas Grigonis
Just checked and to buy direct from the UK and ship to Australia works out to to be $28.55 AU. Definitely not cheap. I might stick with spraying Alclad 😄
5 November 2016, 11:35
Donald Dickson II
Yeah that probably would be the better way to go.
5 November 2016, 23:35
Gordon Sørensen
Looks like Rub n' Buff is the way to go. I have a F-86 Sabre I want to do in NMF. I am hoping a light layer Klear will seal everything in and stop any unwanted smudging.
6 November 2016, 01:30
Dutch
So, the owner of Mayco Color sent me an email today. He said he never heard of Treasure Gold, and suggested I go to Michael's craft store. I thanked him for his time. So when I get back from my current business trip, I will try the Rub'n Buff and see if I can replicate Donald's results. R/ Dutch

I was showing my adult son how to use Rub'n Buff on his Monogram 1:48 B-17 this weekend. I will post photos for comparison later this week.

Look forward to seeing that

Excellent 🙂

I have never heard of Rub and Buff, if you can get it a Michael's I will have to give it a try.
20 December 2016, 18:24
Donald Dickson II
OK, so I tried spraying gloss coat on it. That is a no go folks! It totally removed the rub n buff. Just left with semi glossy plastic.
21 December 2016, 02:51
Dutch
Don, Hmmm... What type of gloss coat; lacquer, acrylic or enamel?
21 December 2016, 13:04
Augie
Yeah I would be interested to know too
21 December 2016, 17:58
Gordon Sørensen
I wonder if Future/Klear would work.
22 December 2016, 00:36
Augie
I use klear/Future and it works fine.
22 December 2016, 18:19
Dutch
Don, Did you put the Rub'n Buff straight on the plastic or did you spray the plastic first with a coat of gloss paint? R/ Dutch
22 December 2016, 18:57
Donald Dickson II
It was gloss lacquer. Testers to be exact. On one of the test wings I did I primed it first with Mr Surfacer 1500 black. The other one, the one I sprayed with the gloss coat, was straight on the plastic.
22 December 2016, 21:10
Dutch
That may be the problem. I think the Rub'n Buff needs some kind of finish to grab onto, not just plastic which actually repels the wax base.
23 December 2016, 02:05
Donald Dickson II
I will give a try on the other one and see what happens
23 December 2016, 02:23
Dutch
Today I tried Rub'n Buff on my son's 1:48 scale Monogram B-17G kit: the horizontal stabilizers to be precise. I did one side, top and bottom straight onto the silver plastic. The other side, I first sprayed with gloss black lacquer: what I had on hand. I then put two thin coats of Rub'n Buff on each set and gently buffed with a cotton ball. The straight plastic seems to shine better, but appears to be a see-through coat. The painted side has a more opaque layer, but is not as shiny as the other. Augie, I cannot upload photos to your album, so I will create my own album and post a link later tonight. Merry Christmas to all. R/ Dutch

Okay, my initial results posted here: Rub'n Buff Natural Metal Experiment | Album by Dutch (1:48) I will keep buffing to see if the undercoated stabs will achieve a higher gloss shine. I will strip the other stabs and gloss goat and see if I can achieve a glossy shine as well.
26 December 2016, 19:42
Augie
Hmmm looks fairly good. I dont tend to buff mine much
26 December 2016, 21:49
Dutch
Augie, my photography skills are lacking. I tried to get the light to reflect on the stabs for comparison purposes. I always thought that the goal of a natural metal finish was to get a shiny reflective finish. I now know a little more and realize there are several different "shades" of finish. I will keep experimenting with my son and his B-17G. However, I am half way through building a Monogram SNJ-6 Texan with my daughter and we are using metal foil, Nestle Crunch candy bar wrappers in this case, with Micro-Sol BMF adhesive on the dull side. See here: NAA SNJ-6: USMC VMT-2 | Project by Dutch (1:48) The photos show a lt. grey color, but I have other period photos showing a highly polished natural metal finish, hence the use of foil.
26 December 2016, 23:36
Augie
Ahhh good idea 🙂
26 December 2016, 23:53
Clifford Keesler
I have never tried foil, have thought about it but have no idea of what to use for adhesive. I got a Monogram F-100d Thunderbirds Super Sabre, and thought that might be an interesting subject for foil. Or to try the New line of Metallic Acrylic paints. Any suggestions would be helpful.
27 December 2016, 00:38
Dutch
Are Microscale decaling and foiling products still available? I dare say my bottle is at least 15 years old.
