Grumman F-14A Tomcat "Frequent Wind"
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/2/5/1/1701251-10501-53-720.jpg)
Dug up from the bottom of my stash, a very old Hasegawa F-14A in just the markings that I wanted for my Vietnam War collection.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/2/5/2/1701252-10501-56-720.jpg)
The box is crammed full with a daunting amount of parts...
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/2/5/3/1701253-10501-60-720.jpg)
OMG, what am I getting into… There is even PE in there. Not the usual simple stuff I build.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/2/5/4/1701254-10501-10-720.jpg)
First subassemblies in progress. Had to remove al lot ejector pin marks which were all over the place.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/2/5/5/1701255-10501-10-720.jpg)
First spraying session with lots of white, gray and burned exhaust metallic.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/2/5/6/1701256-10501-28-720.jpg)
Sprayed a light buff color in the exhaust, added some of the PE and heavily stained everything based on images I found.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/2/5/7/1701257-10501-79-720.jpg)
More subassemblies in progress. Fit is nice but not everything drops together, care is needed to prevent steps and gaps.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/2/5/8/1701258-10501-20-720.jpg)
Assembling the fuselage step by step. This kit is an exercise in tricky clamping.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/2/5/9/1701259-10501-54-720.jpg)
The butt end kept fighting me, it was difficult to get the exhausts in later on.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/2/6/0/1701260-10501-90-720.jpg)
Starting on the wings. These are clearly designed for the “everything dropped” option, the clean option I want is tricky to assemble.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/2/6/1/1701261-10501-63-720.jpg)
Clamping the intake trunks into submission. The RH one went on OK, but could not avoid nasty steps on the LH one.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/2/6/2/1701262-10501-16-720.jpg)
In the meantime completed the cockpit, which is very nice, complete with PE instrument panels.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/2/6/3/1701263-10501-82-720.jpg)
More clamps needed, widened the rear end a bit to improve fit to the main fuselage.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/2/6/4/1701264-10501-62-720.jpg)
Adding the flaps to the wings. Again fiddly. One kept on popping loose...
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/2/6/5/1701265-10501-79-720.jpg)
nstalled the nose. Despite widening I still had a step on the LH side that required filler.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/2/6/6/1701266-10501-88-720.jpg)
Installed the radome (including a nose weight) which did not fit very well. Probably my own doing.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/2/6/7/1701267-10501-55-720.jpg)
installed the gun panels, which also did not fit as well as I would have liked. Also needed filler on the lower nose insert.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/2/6/8/1701268-10501-85-720.jpg)
The canopy unfortunately has a prominent mold parting line along the top
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/2/6/9/1701269-10501-92-720.jpg)
Removed the mould line and sanded and polished the canopy
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/2/7/0/1701270-10501-39-720.jpg)
Looking great after a dip in HG51.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/2/7/1/1701271-10501-99-720.jpg)
Preparing for the first primer coat by masking the areas already sprayed white. Popped out an upper intake ramp, duh… Managed to reinstall it.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/2/7/2/1701272-10501-77-720.jpg)
Installed and sanded down the navigation lights transparencies. These are so tiny I lost a few which I replaced with clear sprue. Could have done without this level of detail and finnickyness…
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/2/7/3/1701273-10501-67-720.jpg)
Filling the base of the fins. Quite some gaps here.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/2/7/4/1701274-10501-95-720.jpg)
Primer coat on, looking pretty good
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/2/7/5/1701275-10501-68-720.jpg)
Sprayed the antiglare panel and pre-shaded
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/2/7/6/1701276-10501-79-720.jpg)
Used some references from the Internet to help with masking the antiglare panel
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/2/7/7/1701277-10501-33-720.jpg)
Complex masking after spraying the lower surfaces white
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/2/7/8/1701278-10501-10-720.jpg)
Followed by the light gull grey upper surfaces. So far I have used Revell and Humbrol enamels.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/2/7/9/1701279-10501-78-720.jpg)
Masked the upper surfaces and sprayed the light tan radome and red fin tips and ventral strakes
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/2/8/1/1701281-10501-29-720.jpg)
As I had no red Sharpie at hand I tried a new technique for the red door edges: tamponing. Not a great success…
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/2/8/0/1701280-10501-16-720.jpg)
Sprayed the NMF bits such as the wing LE and exhaust areas
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/2/8/2/1701282-10501-39-720.jpg)
Always exciting: pulling off a ton of paper and tape. Result is not perfect but not too shabby either. Good enough for me.
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/2/8/3/1701283-10501-56-720.jpg)
After a gloss coat of HG51 we’re ready for decaling
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/2/8/4/1701284-10501-79-720.jpg)
Oops, while decaling I noticed that I forgot to spray the spoilers white. Some judicious masking and a quick coat of white sorted that one…
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/2/8/5/1701285-10501-68-720.jpg)
The Hasegawa decals worked fine after coating them with a decal bonder. Lot’s of stencils though…
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/2/8/6/1701286-10501-71-720.jpg)
And decals done! Phew. Missiles came from a hasegawa missile set.
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/2/8/7/1701287-10501-78-720.jpg)
Before another gloss coat to seal the decals I first installed the landing gear as I can no longer use the spraying handle I used earlier.
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/2/8/8/1701288-10501-20-720.jpg)
The gloss coat didn’t go down well, no idea what went wrong. Removed most of the upper finish and ploughed on with weathering. Still practising and may have overdone it a bit.
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/2/9/0/1701290-10501-69-720.jpg)
Followed this up with a Tamiya matt coat but evidently was not patient enough. I guess the gloss coat had not fully hardened on the bottom surface and had an argument with the matt coat. Aarghh!
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/2/8/9/1701289-10501-85-720.jpg)
After a lot of muttering and hair-pulling I sanded down the carnage as well as possible and resprayed parts of the underside. Remarkably the decals survived the sanding.
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/2/9/1/1701291-10501-94-720.jpg)
Used some pastel powders to blend in the new white. By now this bird is awfully dirty…
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/2/9/2/1701292-10501-30-720.jpg)
Sitcking on wheels, gear doors and missiles. Quite fiddle and the pylons did not fit very well.
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/2/9/3/1701293-10501-64-720.jpg)
Almost there, adding the final antennas and probes with only some detail painting to do.
![Album image #44 Album image #44](/albums/img/2/9/4/1701294-10501-29-720.jpg)
A bit of a disappointing end game but we're done!
