So, I had this in my stash and figured it was a good time to get started on it (main reason it was easier to extract this box from the stash without everything collapsing on me 😄).
And boy was I in for a surprise. I would NOT recommend this kit to anyone, certainly not at 60-70 euros which Dragon is currently asking for it. It's basically the Cyber-Hobby Firefly Orange box (yeah, a budget value kit) with some "new" sprues for the FL-10 turret. Which don't look at all like new sprues. Unless you live in the 70's.

They have the Dragon name and logo on them otherwise I would have assumed they are from some 1975 kit made by someone else, that's how bad they are. The casting is bad, the details are barely three-dimensional, the plastic looks like it's half-melted and the flash is everywhere.

Now, the egyptian army acquired some M4A4's but they were not happy with the original engine so they retooled them with M4A2 diesel engines. Which means that you need a M4A4 hull (which is longer) but with an M4A2 engine deck and of course the exhausts. Dragon managed to get right only the engine deck; they forgot about the exhaust, so that side in their instructions looks exactly like the one on the Firefly.

Also on the box cover you can see some spare track links on the hull front. You don't get any of these in the box.

On the painting instructions you can also see the idler tension wrench on the back of the hull but this is not mentioned anywhere else in the instructions. You can find in the box a metal wire (great) but there's nowhere to use it in the instructions (not so great) And I'm pretty sure I'm going to find some other surprises.

Build (almost) complete.

Some small details have to be added (some are not mentioned in the instructions at all, some are present in the drawings but without any indication), but the pieces are present and identified on the sprues. They were part of the normal M4A4's, however I can find very little photos of Egyptian Shermans and those do not have these items fitted on (it's true most of the pictures are of decommissioned vehicles or wrecks so they might miss items). The details that I'm considering so far: the two extinguishers near the read lights, the idler wrench tool, the gun cleaning rod kit, the front siren. Still thinking if I should add them or not.

There are also some spare link tracks that appear on the box cover but not in the instructions. I might be able to scratch build something for that.

Such a shitty kit! Too bad as I've been wanting to build this one for a long time but that won't happen, at least not with the Dragon kit.

Yeah, Dragon really dropped the ball with this one. You might be able to build something if you have a decent M4A4 kit and the AMX-13 (FL-10) turret from Takom, Hobby Boss or Tamiya (any one of these is light years ahead of Dragon's turret), but you will need some serious modifications needed:
- the engine deck from M4A2 (and unfortunately the M4A2 hull is shorter so even with a M4A2 kit available you still need some scratch building)
- the exhausts from M4A2
- the FL-10 turret is smaller than the original Sherman turret so they built a turret ring adapter; this has to be scratch built somehow (some plasticard and some rivets added to it). Dragon did a shitty job here as well as somehow they thought the ring is only half a ring on the front of the turret and not all around 🙂

I have the same experience with some Italeri planes in Tamiya boxes. 🙁
Ever since I discovered that, I never buy a kit anymore without checking this site and at least a review. So happy with all the mates here 😎

Painted and applied decals. Next step: weathering and figuring out some stowage

Ah, crud. Just bought this kit and thought it would be decent, (didn't do any research) but now I realized I messed up.

Edit: Return policies are great! Thank you for the honest review so I didn't also get my money taken.
